If you’re asking your boss for a favor it’s better to be honest about it. When Jenn had found herself running late for work for the first time in years, she texted her superior in advance. After she explained the situation, however, he responded in a way that probably surprised the whole company. To better understand where it came from, you need a little background information about Jenn and her work ethic.
“This lady has been with the company for about 8 years,” the boss wrote. “This was the first time Jenn has been late in nearly six years. She missed work one other time in her nearly eight-year career with us, and that was when her son had his wisdom teeth removed about nine months into her employment.”
This time, she was late eleven minutes. “Not too terrible, if you’re asking me,” the boss added. “She’s also a very sweet older lady that the guys in the office call ‘Mom.’ Jenn also calls herself ‘Mom’ in company emails, etc. She fully embraces the name and has done so since her last child left for college almost five years ago.”

Wow, when will bosses understand that it doesn't matter when or where the employee works, as long as he works the agreed upon weekly hours? Sometimes I work at night, sometimes in the weekends, as long as I make 40 hours a week.

This is called understanding and not trying to micromanage. People have lives outside of work. If they are not abusers of the system, do not turn them into employees who hate their job. Good job of understanding, we need more managers like that person.
My present boss is probably as awesome as the boss in this story. She always tells us to leave on time and never says anything when we're a little late. We work harder because she trusts us so much. My previous boss was a bully and a psychopath. Whenever i left my desk I had to announce to her i was stepping away. So I would tell her I was either taking a c**p or a p**s in case I was taking longer then usual.
Hey your last boss sounds like my current boss, one time she goes you are in the bathroom more that you are in your office. I am like um sorry i drink a lot of water i had only gone pee like twice that day and it was only noon. Now i feel like i have to hide each time i have to pee. God forbid i have to go #2.

If shes truly horrible, you can report her because opening a package that wasnt addressed to you is actually a criminal offense. Doesnt matter if its your boss, a relative or even if they live in the same household as you, if its not addressed with their name on it, they broke a federal law.

I had to take my elderly dog in to be put to sleep. I called in to work. they said if I wasn't on time, I would get written up for an unexcused absence, I was miserable all day. My dad took my dog in for me, and buried him for me too.
IF there were more bosses like this in the world I probably wouldn't have switched jobs soo many times.
I have always been 15 minutes early for any job I have had. It's just a habit of mine since I think it's nice to get there early and slowing start my day rather than have to rush and be all disorganized. Anyways, I had a review with my boss one day, and he reprimanded me for always leaving at 5pm everyday. I was confused as this was normal business hrs. I asked him if he ever noticed how early I was every dang day and he said no one notices that but leaving on the dot shows you are anxious to leave and you don't like your job. I mean, wht? I was just trying to beat traffic but oh well, after that, I would wait till he left before I did. I only stayed on a couple more months after that simply because the boss was such an a*s.
Maybe it is because i am german, but am i the only person who just thinks that it is quite outrageous to respawn your boss, that you are late, because you dawdled on purpose for b******t?? Show some respect and pretend it's the traffic? I mean, i would be affraid that my boss wouldn't take me serious next time, when i am actually in trouble to make it on time. And also- i don't think that you can run a business when you give away presents for employees who are late. That sounds just superweird sorry. You can say "hey it's alright, don't worry." If it's just about couple minutes anyways of course. But i don't think you should react like this more than couple times, as a boss.
My boss is one of those “on time is late” asshats. It doesn’t matter that we all work unpaid overtime or that everyone is consistently getting work done EXCEPT for the favorites who come in 10 minutes early. He still threatens our jobs for being five minutes late, and we live in one of the most traffic riddled areas in America. Doesn’t matter to him. He’s not intelligent enough to see the nuance. And none of the people who come in early are good employees or even good people inside. It’s truly bizarre and I cannot wait to stop working for other people because it’s always a bad experience in one way or another.

Not a Boss - a Mindful Manager. The MD of my workplace is like this too. Understanding of problems that occur in everyday life. Amazing Human Being to work for. I have told him that too.
Ha! I worked for a mean boss and would give written warnings for even one minute late. When my mom was dying, I went to see her every morning before work and was an hour away, then spent another one to two hours to get to work. I was 15 minutes late one morning. Someone had the audacity to ask why. So I said I was watching my mom die. Turned and walked away. She passed a couple days later and waited for me to get there after work. My one big regret in life was that I didn't say screw it to work and bring her home to die in peace. Now I am the boss elsewhere and are always extremely accommodating. No one abuses the privilege. We all work as a team and help each other out.
Remember that day you sent a pic of your dog to your boss and told them you were going to be late, and they forgave you and now you must go to a pet shop and find a dog identical to that one?

I emailed my boss last year to let him know that yes I would be in the office on Monday, but warned him that I might not be myself, and might be a little off my game, because someone I knew, a young man of 25, had shot himself in the head over the weekend. I came in because we had a big major thing going on. Otherwise I would have just taken PTO and no one would have known what happened, but since I knew I'd be a basket case on Monday, I let him know. No response. He never responded.

It would be nice if the company I work for actually cared about their employees. The entire upper management of this place is awful to their employees, but specifically my direct manager is a complete a*****e who really does not care about any of the 15 people that have to work for him. He sits 6 feet away from me and will not have an actual conversation with me or anyone else. It's always over instant messaging and he does it so that all communications with him have a trail.

Why would anyone use the name, "dicksmashercunt", especially a woman? Would you really want people to see that as you? Anyway, a boss like that promotes a healthy workplace as opposed to a toxic one (which there are many). That also promotes deep loyalty. I had a boss like that and there is nothing I wouldn't do for the man!
Koodos to the boss for recognizing and rewarding her contributions and koodos to her for being someone deserving of a break. It's obvious she earned this, keeping in mind that not everyone has. I've worked with enough people that shouldn't even have a job let alone getting a pass for a pattern of tardiness and dishonesty.
Ugh. I just got a write up for being 20 minutes late because I was stuck behind an accident. Never mind I have 50 hours of pto still...we just aren't allowed to use it for illnesses or lateness unless we schedule it first.
How are you supposed to schedule being sick or plan for being late?! They are by nature an unforeseen event...

Perfect example of the difference between a 'boss' and a 'leader.'
I used to work in a place where there were cats and I used to take care of them. Once one of the cats got really sick and I was devastated. Lots of people including big bosses started to call to ask how the cat and I were doing.
I've had various bosses, my first boss hired me because I'm blonde, his wife pushed me over the edge and I left, (I have a fibromyalgia so am often too sick to work and have recently been told I cannot work by my doctor) my next boss I thought was great until he tried to kiss me, I told him he made me uncomfortable and I had to leave (I was never paid and later found out the work I thought I was doing for CANSA was a con and he kept the money. I felt so foul and dirty even though I had no idea) my latest boss was so wonderful she invited me to her house paid me quite a lot considering I would have gladly worked for free I just loved it so much (I was a cosplayer at children's parties it's so fulfilling) she gives me work I can do from home because she knows I need the money for my meds and such she's an all round wonderful human and has always understood if I was sick or late due to my illness
I think I have the only boss in the world who yells at you for coming to work even a few minutes early...you can only start on the dot. And no, no one is asking for pay for coming in early either...she's just mental...

An amazing boss to a wonderful employee. Those who work hard, be early or on time, treats everyone with respect should be rewarded because it teaches her coworker how to be a grown up.
I love my boss. She's President of a Fortune 500 company, and I'm her Executive Assistant. With three boys and a husband, she knows the value of family and time with them. She's genuine and caring, smart as they come, and has a ready laugh. I hit the jackpot. I paid my dues to get here, but it was worth it.
