What comes to mind when you think of a dystopian universe? is it Dali-esque surrealist landscapes or is it a more realistic world like 'The Handmaidens Tale' or '1984.' Well, according to the late Brtish academic and cultural theorist Mark Fisher, we are already living in a present-day dystopian society and folks - it is very boring.

The term 'boring dystopia' was coined by Fisher in 2015 and refers to the subliminal coercion that abounds in a capitalist society. So subtle that unless you're looking, you might not realize these problems with society are actually already happening. Charlie Booker's Black Mirror is the closest fantasy depiction of this theory, with his episodes questioning how far is too far when it comes to our evolving technology and how close we are to the dystopian future.

However, for real-life examples of this theory, and social issues coming together with, it look no further than the sub-Reddit titled 'A Boring Dystopia,' which is dedicated to sharing images that are disturbingly unassuming. From the poster that reads "Sleep deprivation is your drug of choice. You might be a doer," or a bus passing by with bold black letters stating, "You don't need therapy you just need a new car," the following photos may make you question every society problem in a different light.

Scroll down below to see the Orwellian thread of signs on problems with the world!

Based on the ATM symbol ("bankomat" on yellow background with Raiffeisen logo) and the uniform of the paramedics it is from Croatia. The photo dates back to September 2016, and the Photographer's name is Sandra Krunic. The original title of this photo said something about American healthcare, which doesn't fit.

I've read the article, the company produces vending machines, so one day the ceo woke up and got an idea, what if insted of carry around the credit key (i don't know how is called in english) we miniatourize it and inject it under our skin? So thats it, insted of get the key out of your poket to get coffe you wave your hand at the machine. The people who created the chip tested it on themselves and the other followed, it works also as a badge to open security doors and to loggin on their devices, no GPS, no mind control. It's litterally the stuff that all of us carry in our pokets, well less so becouse your phone has GPS and probabily mind controll. Your fears are irrational.

They aren't irrational. It wouldn't be the first time a company went further than they told you eg FACEBOOK - look at how the executives there struggled to admit the truth. If employees accept this the CEO might wonder what else they'll accept.

"And they love it"... either they are not really smart, either they didn't really have the choice to "love it". And so... when you change job, you have to get a surgery to get it off? you just add a new chip somewhere else?

culmone10 avatar

It's an RFID Chip, it stores a small string of numbers, so hypotetically your ID number gets scanned your first day ond the job to garant you access to doors and computers and deletted the day you leave. But the main purpuse of the one in the article is to store credit for the vending machines.

This is scary - you can be tracked forever - like how long the employee spends in the bathroom

tobias-meiner avatar
Tobias Meiner

5 years ago DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Not really. Such small implants use RFID tags in either low (~130 kHz) or high (~13 MHz) frequency range that have a maximum reading range of 3-4 feet, that can be practically as low as half of this due to the tag being hidden under skin (water hinders radio transmission quite well). So, unless there are RFID scanners every two feet, it is impossible to track a person this way. Sure, 4th generation IC emitters can be read from 50 feet, but this mean that you can't pinpoint the location (employee may be at their desks, in the bathroom or in a cafe on the other side of the street). Traditional ID badges are much better for real life location tracking, as you can easily fit an active IC RFID with a large antenna there.

I've nothing against microchips, i would love to not having to carry documents, credit/debit cards, social security cards and the like around. They would also be super usefull to loggin in personal devices, i cannot see why people hate that idea so mutch.
