While we may imagine a dystopian future of thought police, killer robots, and nuclear fallout, the real future predictions are much more boring. Instead of being brutally brainwashed and enslaved by fascist, authoritarian regimes, we have willingly enslaved ourselves. By allowing the top 1% to get exponentially richer, we drown in a sea of debts, tech, advertising, endless wars, environmental destruction, addictions, depression... the list goes on.

Brilliant, isn't it? But it's ok; there's always Facebook to scroll through (Bored Panda too, obvs), Netflix to watch, chemical-laden meals to consume, manufactured outrages over a mermaid's skin color to comment on. Who's got time for thoughtful resistance in this sick, sad world? Even those that think they are resisting by electing bigoted billionaires, bankers and Eton toffs to represent them are simply playing into their hands, as their dishonest, scaremongering claptrap divides us ever further over political, racial and gender lines!

Sometimes we need to take a step back and see the forest for the trees. This list, compiled by Bored Panda, contains some pretty terrifying examples of present-day dystopian society, things that make you realize that beyond all the distractions of trying to survive and thrive in the rat race, something's not quite right with this world.

So if you didn't find the sinister scenes of mindless automatons chanting “send her back” chilling enough, scroll down below to get a reality check on the spookily Orwellian society we are allowing to be constructed, and let's see if we can fix our near future in the comments! If you want to see even more proof of our dystopian world, be sure to check out our previous list!

The term 'boring dystopia was coined by the late academic and cultural theorist Mark Fisher in 2015. He used it to refer to the "bland, mildly coercive signs that abound in late-stage capitalist society, which foster a vague sense of isolation or unease."

He started a Facebook group that documented these signs as a way to develop consciousness about the world around us. "It was understood from the start to be a consciousness-raising exercise, encouraging people to perceive the actual state of Britain rather than the PR state," Fisher said in an interview with Vice. "Which is surprisingly hard, because there's this mixture of Silicon Valley ideology, PR and advertising which distracts us from our own aesthetic poverty, and the reality of what we have. Which is just all these crap robots…"

"Boring Dystopia was partly about the fact that no one can care about stuff any more," said Fisher. "It's not that they don't care, but in a city like London, or any intensely pressured urban metropolis—add to that the pressures of capitalist cyberspace and people just feel like they perpetually have no time."

The Facebook group was short-lived, with Fisher quickly becoming disillusioned with Facebook itself. "For me the point at which the group started to go downhill was when it became like every other Facebook group. It was just recirculating 'content' and sending links, keeping people inside what I would call capitalist cyberspace instead of looking outside at their own environment. It felt like it was reinforcing the condition it was intended to displace," he explained.

"It didn't work at that scale, and you could feel that it wasn't the right place for it… It was just an experiment, and Facebook probably wasn't the right platform. I didn't want it to be diluted."

After Fisher's tragic death in 2017 at the age of 48, his work remains as his legacy and is as important and relevant as it's ever been. His 2009 book Capitalist Realism is a must-read for anyone wanting to understand the modern world, and his 'Boring Dystopia' group lives on mainly in the subreddit r/ABoringDystopia.

And on top, medically absurd. For the health of mother and baby, studies show that this early bonding, especially after a c-section, is invaluable! It has been found that it mitigates problems otherwise associated with c-sections, such as weakness is the baby and breast-feeding-related problems. And it will greatly reduce the risk of the mother become depressive after birth. But hey, the hospital could earn money if any of this happens, and the baby-food industry just waits for all these babys who "simply do not like breast milk". This is vile!

I have skin cancer on my shoulder, In Atlanta I was bleeding and needed a new bandage. Went into the Er, told them what I had and what I needed. They didn't believe me. Told me it was "Drug seeking behavior and an std." I am still curious what kind of parties that doctor goes to that std's present on the shoulder. When they finally took the bandage off and realized I was right. The Er doc said it was, "above his pay grade and I should find a doctor that makes me feel comfortable." Then they had the balls to send me a bill.

If I understand correctly it's 13k, 11.6k of which are paid by insurance and then she still has to pay another 1.6k. Absurd. In Bulgaria it's about 1.5k dollars to give birth at a private hospital (part of which can be covered by additional medical insurance which some employers provide for their staff), government ones are free.

This is pathetic. Y'all are on the warpath about something of which y'all obviously know nothing. Skin to skin care is needed when a baby needs IV or oxygen. At least 1, if not 2, trained personnel need to monitor the vital signs of the baby and check on positioning of the child. What I find totally incredible is how ENTITLED and UNEDUCATED y'all are. Do YOU spend money for education and then go to a job where YOU don't get paid? How are these people supposed to live, while y'all get everything for free?

Sometimes preemies need skin to skin contact for their health. In truth, the mom and babe need a great deal of help from nurses/or respiratory therapists. It used to be the babies just stayed in their isolettes until a blackout caused people to discover this. Do I think it's a legitimate charge. Don't let someone who is uneducated or wants to cause problems fool you by distorting the facts.

This has been around for a while, it was the fee for an extra midwife to stay in theatre with the Mum & baby, as I gather otherwise the baby would’ve gone to the nursery. Still extremely weird, we routinely do skin to skin in theatre, and even if we don’t for some reason, the baby stays with it's parents. Nurseries don’t exist in Australia, babies room in unless they’re ill and have to go to ICU.

It doesn't. You just have the baby wherever you want. You don't have to pay someone who's trained and studied - nurses pulling 12 hour shifts, checking your meds 6 times before you take them to make sure you are who you are and not getting the wrong meds. Just invite someone who hasn't paid for their education and who has to work for a living. They charge nothing. And if something goes wrong and you have a tragedy you have nobody but yourself to blame. You can sue yourself for malpractice - and, hey! You don't even need a lawyer for that!!!

Would you like to have open wounds on your nipples ( or penis) and then have a pit bull with no teeth clamp down on them? I used to rock backward and forward from the pain. It wasn't until I had help with my 4th and 5th baby that a friend who was a lactation consultant helped me. Most women nowadays get a lactation consultant and that's real PROGRESS!!

Let's not overlook the "contractual allowance adjustment". If an insurance company pays it pays almost 50% less than they expect an uninsured person to private pay. If an uninsured person could afford to pay 50% more than an insurance company then they would have insurance.

Not that it's any better or worse, but these are probably "exploding" charges. The data entry person enters one code, and a bunch of others pop up with it as well. That's why I always check my medical bills to make sure I wasn't charged for something I didn't have, or fight about the cost of something I did have.

I live in Canada so they usually send a private nurse out to your home to help you with nursing for a couple of hours. Just once to your home and you will get some consulting whilst you are in hospital. This is free for us , the government pays this. But I would have paid for a lactation nurse $60. It sounds like a lot but it is worth every penny. Breastfeeding sucks...no pun intended. It hurts and sometimes is near impossible. Not all first time moms know what to do , it is hard.

Interestingly you can actually refuse to pay certain charges if you think their fraudulent. That really screws up the hospitals accounting. On lesser charges they usually let it go then. You could also argue your costs down. If you have to pay out of pocket always argue your costs down.

And here in Canada the government pays you a monthly cheque until child turns 18. It is around $600/ month till kid turns 6yrs old then it goes down $100. So, $500 every month till 18yrs old and free dental for all kids til l18! I think it is something like 4 kids you get this amount for each child then after 5 or more they do not pay as much for additional kids. If yourtax bracket is a certain amount these prices will go down, I gave the low end, so the best case scenario.

Getting lactation consultation in the hospitals is a victory won by the LaLeche League (IMO, one of the best organizations in the world) who've been fighting since the 1940's-'50's for this. Unfortunately, similarly to the anti-immunization groups, people have become spoiled by the way of life that people had to work for over decades. If this weren't so sad I'd enjoy the irony.

In Japan, 20 years ago, when my children were born, it cost about 300,000 yen (about 3,000 US dollars) for the delivery and a 10 day hospital stay. This is one of the very, very few things not covered by Japanese insurance ... but no problem. Our town paid 100% of the cost for all babies born.

This is the problem when posters don't know, or tell, the complete truth. People start believing outrageous things.

Some years ago I was teaching in a private school and getting a dirt salary. The school did provide insurance and I got a much needed surgery. In recovery some paper booties were placed on my feet I did not want or ask for, and I requested they be removed. A friend who worked at the hospital told me it was her job to find items they could charge the patient/insurer, and three months later, I received a second itemized bill from the hospital. One charge was $20 for paper booties and another was $50 for an enema I had never had administered, but was credited to my name. I refused to pay. My insurance refused to pay for anesthesia for that surgery, too. I called them up and explained that surgery to remove cyst-filled Fallopian tubes generally required anesthetic, and would they please cover that for me? Thankfully, they did.

This is going to continue as long as do not have a single payer health insurance system. Hospitals are FOR PROFIT and, by law, they must treat every single person who shows up in ER even if they don't or can't pay. So, they balance it out by overcharging everywhere and everything else. It would be cheaper to have a baby in a hotel room with a private nurse.

There are big problems with the medical industry, but that doesn't mean that single-payer insurance is the answer.

I bet there's more to your story. Did you go to the ER or medical office for some ailment, had a battery of tests done before figuring out that all you needed was an anti inflammatory?

Maybe you don't understand how difficult it can be to live in other countries. And how different they are culturally. In Finland you do not have the freedom to choose any name you want for your baby. It has to be state approved. Did you know that? My sister-in-law in the UK had to wait 1 1/2 years to see a specialist about her migraines and get a prescription for a medicine that an American could get in less than a week from their regular doc. It's easy to believe that the grass is greener on the other side.

It's not even just this. The medical industry is so hyper inflated. I like that trump is forcing hospitals to have to publish the cost of their procedures so you can now make them compete for your business. More steps like this need to happen.

No. Not unless your child needed oxygen or had to be in the NICU. Then you need one or two trained people to make sure the premie or child with problems can be held properly, all the while monitoring vital signs . You don't have to pay to do it, if you choose to take yourself and your compromised baby out of the hospital and take it off the oxygen or IV or whatever it needs.

In America, not in Finland or not even in Europe. The law here states it’s around 43$/night and usually they stay in the hospital for 1-3 nights if there are no complications. Obviously the cost is much higher but that’s what they charge, at least couple years ago. C-section doesn't cost extra, neither does the pain medication. If you stay in a family room afterwards, no extra cost for the baby but the companion/spouse who comes there has to pay but there is a limit of 765 dollars (basically 1 to 2 weeks in a family room I think, not sure) which means afterwards you don’t pay anything. Obviously you need to have insurance but having a baby does not come with a price tag like this. That is insane!

Should a doctor, who pays nowadays over $100,000 a year in student loans, get paid nothing? Do you know how hard most of them work? I'm talking about small town family practitioners who spend few waking hours at home with their families and never know when they might face an emergency placental abruption or other life endangering situation.

I'm familiar with this line item charge, it is actually justifiable based on the additional staffing and safety checks necessary to carry out the "skin-to-skin" procedure. I get why people who see this charge on their bill would feel confused and feel indignation. I think it would be better if they just bundle it with the main procedure so as not to cause confusion.

It's not paying for the C-Section, It's paying for having your child handed to you to hold them that irks me and everyone out.

There is one thing we can do: Get out and vote. Vote for the senators and representatives who aren't afraid to push for single-payer, universal health care. And if someone calls you a socialist, tell them to look at Japan, which a) is hardly socialist, b) has the world's longest life expectancy, and c) has a well-established universal health care system.

If you need to watch a video before trying to do something to help, it doesn't matter whether there are ads or not; the person will probably die anyway. That's the reason why everybody should learn some very basic first aid skills, like the Hemilich Maneuver, at school, instead of soooo much useless rubbish.
