While we may imagine a dystopian future of thought police, killer robots, and nuclear fallout, the real future predictions are much more boring. Instead of being brutally brainwashed and enslaved by fascist, authoritarian regimes, we have willingly enslaved ourselves. By allowing the top 1% to get exponentially richer, we drown in a sea of debts, tech, advertising, endless wars, environmental destruction, addictions, depression... the list goes on.

Brilliant, isn't it? But it's ok; there's always Facebook to scroll through (Bored Panda too, obvs), Netflix to watch, chemical-laden meals to consume, manufactured outrages over a mermaid's skin color to comment on. Who's got time for thoughtful resistance in this sick, sad world? Even those that think they are resisting by electing bigoted billionaires, bankers and Eton toffs to represent them are simply playing into their hands, as their dishonest, scaremongering claptrap divides us ever further over political, racial and gender lines!

Sometimes we need to take a step back and see the forest for the trees. This list, compiled by Bored Panda, contains some pretty terrifying examples of present-day dystopian society, things that make you realize that beyond all the distractions of trying to survive and thrive in the rat race, something's not quite right with this world.

So if you didn't find the sinister scenes of mindless automatons chanting “send her back” chilling enough, scroll down below to get a reality check on the spookily Orwellian society we are allowing to be constructed, and let's see if we can fix our near future in the comments! If you want to see even more proof of our dystopian world, be sure to check out our previous list!

The term 'boring dystopia was coined by the late academic and cultural theorist Mark Fisher in 2015. He used it to refer to the "bland, mildly coercive signs that abound in late-stage capitalist society, which foster a vague sense of isolation or unease."

He started a Facebook group that documented these signs as a way to develop consciousness about the world around us. "It was understood from the start to be a consciousness-raising exercise, encouraging people to perceive the actual state of Britain rather than the PR state," Fisher said in an interview with Vice. "Which is surprisingly hard, because there's this mixture of Silicon Valley ideology, PR and advertising which distracts us from our own aesthetic poverty, and the reality of what we have. Which is just all these crap robots…"

"Boring Dystopia was partly about the fact that no one can care about stuff any more," said Fisher. "It's not that they don't care, but in a city like London, or any intensely pressured urban metropolis—add to that the pressures of capitalist cyberspace and people just feel like they perpetually have no time."

Amen. If I wanted to (during summer holiday) take a bus to the city centre (about 3km), I should do it between 7am and 6pm from Mon to Fri. The bus goes once per hour. No buses on Sat or Sun. If I wanted to go to the other side of the city for something, I'd need to change and wait for the connection, I guess that'd be anything from 1 minute to almost an hour depending on where you go. By car it takes max 10min to get to city centre and 15-20 to get to the other side of the city. And I live on a decent sized city, don't get me started about smaller places -.- bicycles are of course nice but you can't carry everything with a bike and during winter the roads are terrible.

We should all focus on contributing our fair share and do not fall for populism. Industrial countries cutting their greenhouse emissions by 1% while rebuildind their supply chair in other countries (where the same industry does not have any filters and dumps waste just on the beach) is hypocrisy!

Ummm, those 100 corporations don't pollute simply for fun. They are in the business of delivering consumer goods and agricultural products to the people who demand them. They will continue to produce and pollute for as long as it remains profitable.

Which then really gets to the heart of the issue: when a corporation's sole purpose is to make money for shareholders maybe it is time to revisit corporate law on issues such as personhood, restrictictions on incorporation, etc.

Consumers are indeed a major part of the problem. If we used less fossil energy, then the fossil energy companies you mention will sell less gas and less coal/gas burning electricity. It's really quite simple, we need to stop being like yeast craving resources.

Pardon me for pointing this out but, If you don't drive every day, or live in a rural area, then gasoline powered cars are the best technology. However if you commute 100 miles a day, then consider getting an electric car, assuming that you can get electricity that is not from coal...

It's too bad passenger trains only connect 60 of the 300+ cities in the United States. Busses are used in only 120 metropolitan areas, and most suburbs aren't connected to any form of metro. If you live near a coast or Chicago trains are convenient, but the Midwest lacks the funding. Europeans are transit spoiled because of the many reconstructions. The US hasn't had an interior war in nearly a century. Guess you can blame peace for so many autos.

We don't have trains because of “reconstruction“. In fact there are less trains in my area than before the war. The U.S. doesn't have a public transport system like Europe because greedy auto corporations made it so. Watch a docu. It's well documented.

100% dead-on. While average Americans fail to give a s**t about recycling (“Whaaaah, I can’t separate materials, it’s too hard, WAAAH!”), the biggest problem is institutional and corporate. Making individuals take on some kind of moral responsibility for the messes of the institutions is also what the “Ad Council” is all about (note: it used to be The War Advertising Council, Inc., so it has always been propaganda).

That's like when Bloomberg was mayor, he'd have his caravan of SUV's drop him off at the subway station closest to his office and then promote the fact that he was a regular guy because he took the subway. And now that Trump rolled back many EPA laws so these corporations can resume polluting and destroying the environment, it's just getting worse.

In the 1990s I led an environmental group based on the premise that individuals can make more difference than corporations. However, that was predicated on enlisting the younger generation to make changes and to keep that mindset into adulthood as they became a member of said corporations. and moved up the ladder to positions of influence. It is more than sad to be proved wrong.

Without counting that global warming has happened before in history and humans could not be blamed for it, (around the first millenium AC) counted in history as a flowering period after getting over the dark cold ages where people had to go south ( aka:Viking razzias) because of the food scarcity. That it's (global warming) a way of bleeding us in even more making us thing it's for a good reason 'to save Gaia from death' The only thing that all this enormous propaganda effort shows us, how gullible we can became when so called expert voices preach things against common sense as in this case. Science and history teach us that the third planet has gone through at least five massive extinctions and maybe six and here we are, we may not but Gaia will at least until her time comes. You recycling doesn’t help anything either, it creates even more pollution because they’re a whole different setup & those facilities create a lot of pollution. It’s already come to light that corporations ran ads to make individuals think they’re the problem so that they wouldn’t have to make any changes in their production, esp China.

Edward Bernays was the man who, in the 1920s, tied in psychological techniques to what had been previously just providing information about a product. It changed "advertising" from informing people to creating a desire in people for a product, so it's not all on the consumer just being greedy for stuff.

The Facebook group was short-lived, with Fisher quickly becoming disillusioned with Facebook itself. "For me the point at which the group started to go downhill was when it became like every other Facebook group. It was just recirculating 'content' and sending links, keeping people inside what I would call capitalist cyberspace instead of looking outside at their own environment. It felt like it was reinforcing the condition it was intended to displace," he explained.

"It didn't work at that scale, and you could feel that it wasn't the right place for it… It was just an experiment, and Facebook probably wasn't the right platform. I didn't want it to be diluted."
