To learn more about witty comments and how to improve our comedy skills, we spoke to Abigail Paul, a standup comedian, improviser, and actress with an irreverent and original comedy brain. Having performed improvisation, standup comedy, and theatre in venues all over Germany, the US, and the EU, she was kind enough to share her thoughts on why people leave comments in the first place.

“Today’s reader has the advantage over their predecessor that they feel part of the action,” she said. “In comedy, we are always looking to create content that an audience member will relate to, so when someone leaves a fantastic comment on an article or picture, it helps us feel connected, a little less alone.”

“It shows us that someone else, maybe many people, think the same way we do,” Abigail mentioned. “We take great comfort in not being alone on our ideas.”

The standup comedian revealed that the secret to a successful comment is probably equal parts true and surprising. An unexpected remark “that just has shock value isn’t as highly regarded as one that is embedded in truth.”

“In comedy terms, your picture or article you are commenting on is your setup. Your witty comment is the punchline,” she explained. “There are lots of ways to be funny, but a great punchline will usually have excellent use of wordplay, exaggeration, or make an analogy to something else so the reader can maybe see the topic in a new light.”

Well, the natives here in the US were more curious than frightened, and look where that got us. It definitely was the right reaction.

“The most important thing is usually an element of surprise. Good comedy writers use misdirect as well as a magician does. We think we see you going to one place and you go somewhere unexpected. Audiences love a twist,” Abigail said, providing true crime podcasts as an example.

According to her, leaving a comment and letting out a few chuckles helps us bond with others. “Comedy is the most fun thing humans can share (besides pizza),” she said. “The pandemic has forced a lot of comedy experiences online. It hurt live comedy a lot, but new spaces have thrived online because people need to connect and laugh. The upside is you can find ways to be funny at home in your PJs.”

If you want to improve at writing clever comments online, you need to practice. “Comedy is a skill,” Abigail told us. “The more you write, the better you usually get.” But it’s important “not to get too precious about your work. Notice which clever comments you are writing get lots of likes or replies, and see if you can dissect why that comment is working.”

“If something isn’t working, don’t worry too much about why. A lot of good writing is throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks.” She advised you to focus on what works and try to replicate your own formula. “Also - edit. Are there any words you can take out, but the comment is still really funny? Then do. The more concise you are, the better it is for your reader.”

This is the little girl that racist Republicans don't want their grandkids to know that they tried to stop from going to school back in the day. Nasty, hateful racists. And now they are erasing it all.

The pushback against CRT is from people who yelled racist things 60 years ago during integration and are angry that now their children and grandchildren will learn that they yelled.

That and they don't want racism to go away. How anyone thinks treating anyone like this is ok, is beyond me. Hollering it's not my fault my ancestors did to other people. Then actively saying you don't want history taught is insane. Why don't you want people to know what happened? That's the question people need to start asking these folks that are against CRT. Just like what happened with Indians. People lying and denying what really happened. A big eff you to those people. You can be in denial and delusional about the truth but don't stop other people from trying to speak up about what really happened.

The north wasn't innocent either. School segregation was law in the south but a de facto segregated system also emerged in the north due to housing and employment discrimination. The truth is, nation-wide, nearly all Black kids went to all Black schools, and nearly all white kids went to all white schools.

Looked at Ruby's story last month with a class of 11 / 12 year olds. They could not understand how it had ever happened. They also did not get Rosa parks. To be honest, I love that they don't get it - to me the lack of understanding shows that they are good humans who can't understand racism. However I start to question how I teach racism, I have found kids are not naturally racist so I never pushed it much. But I still see kids of different colours experiencing life differently. You know that phrase ' I'm not a racist but... ’ always starts a racist comment, but I'm starting to feel ' I'm not a racist but I'm not part of the solution either' is something I should consider

I'd like to share an event. I was working in school in the UK with a well off catchment area. I regularly took the same bus home as the kids. One afternoon I was waiting for a bus, reading a book, when a few men (not sure if 2 to 4) took objection to me. Their hatred towards me was obvious and I was scared. I do not wish to fule prejudice by stating their nationality - but one which dislikes women. They made it very clear they intended me harm . I closed my eyes and thought, I could run away and get help but I knew the next bus stop would have young girls getting on. I totally believed the men intended harm to me. Then a bunch of black boys surrounded me in an entirely protective manner. I feel sick to my core those boys understood racial threat in a way that none of the white boys did. They should not have been able to perceive the threat. Something is very very wrong

I always wonder what was going on in the heads of those U.S. Marshalls. At some point that got into the office after hunting fugitives or protecting witnesses in some federal case and were given their next job: protect a little girl and her bookbag against hate. You wonder what kind of introspection they went through, or if they went through any at all.
