i think the purpose of that it's to put your tongue (which is warm) on the back of your throat to warm it up. What is causing brainfreeze it's the sudden cold who go through your throat. The brain interpreted it as a pain so send it a pain impulse. The brain can be a pain in the a$$ sometime :-)
Actually it is a response to a blood vessel in the back of your throat. The vessel feels the cold and it immediately dilates which sends a rush of blood to your brain which causes the brain freeze. Drink some warm water to restrict the vessel and it will go away.

Brain freeze happens when the roof of your mouth gets too cold, so I find rubbing my tongue quickly against the roof works to heat it more quickly

A better explanation would be, to put your thumb in your mouth and blow. As if you were blowing up a balloon. It's the bearing down that slows your heart rate.
"Useful tricks" maybe, but how are these "hacks"? This term is nowadays used inflationary and out of context. Most of these things are pretty down to earth, no need for sensationalisn.
Interestingly, also in thus series someone systematically downvoted my posts, even so I only made a few comments. Very odd.
