Though I think the whole situation is stupid and the parents should pay somehow for putting their kid in danger, I don't think there was any other way. Just google for people that were attacked by gorillas or chimpanzees and you will see they can me quite vicious. If the gorilla would've got angry even for a brief moment before the tranquilizer would've kick in that kid would've been done for.
