Woman Shares How She Just Got Racially Profiled At The Bank Trying To Cash Out Her Dad’s Check, Says She’s Gonna Sue Them

Baby Storme, a musician and popular TikToker based in Los Angeles, has just lived through an awful experience. The woman entered her local branch of Citibank, where she has been a customer for about five years, with a $30k check her father sent to help cover her rent for the year.

While depositing the check was supposed to be a smooth and standard procedure, it quickly turned into a deeply troubling situation. You see, the teller who was handling the transaction proceeded to question the authenticity of the check, ended up confiscating it, and refusing to give it back.

Well, Storme had nothing to hide and offered to call her father or any other person they need to verify the check. But she quickly realized she was experiencing racial profiling firsthand. She decided to record the staff’s behavior and was appalled by the actions that followed next. She posted a series of videos that have gone viral, so take a look below to find out how the story unfolded.

Here’s the full video, which got over 19M views, where Storme tells how she attempted to deposit the check

In a follow-up video, Storme thanked her followers for the outpour of support she got after posting the first clip. The woman also revealed more details about this whole incident and answered some of the questions her followers had. First, Storme said that the reason she decided to bring the check to Citibank was that she has been a customer there for almost five years. “Until now,” she added.

Then, since the woman mentioned several times she wanted to “cash” the check, many wondered whether she planned on taking out thousands of dollars in cash like it’s no big deal. “When I say ‘cash the check’, I went in there to deposit the check into my bank account. I wasn’t trying to walk around with $30k cash,” the woman explained. “But when I say ‘cash’, I guess it means the same thing to me, like get the money out of the check.”

The TikTok creator also revealed she’s going to sue Citibank. “I don’t really know anything about suing, but I’m spending all of today just researching lawyers and getting on that ASAP.” And she has compelling evidence to back up her story. The woman stated her father signed the check: it was “a perfectly fine check, there was nothing wrong with it. They didn’t even try to deposit the check before they started saying they had to ‘investigate it’.”

To clarify the situation even further, one follower mentioned that as a teller, they always double-check whether a person would like to cash the check or deposit it into their accounts. Storme replied to their comment by saying “[the employee] asked me if I wanted to deposit it and I said yes! [I] put my card in, gave her ID and everything. Just for her to do that.”

Here’s another clip from inside the bank the woman posted to back up her version of events

Later on, she provided more details and answered questions her followers had

@babystorme♬ original sound – Baby Storme

Then, she showed how the security guard started pulling down the gates after the teller refused to let her out of the bank

This whole incident made people furious. While thousands of users started calling out Citibank’s employees’ inappropriate behavior and demanding to take responsibility for the incident, sadly, this isn’t a one-of-a-kind story. Pretty much everyone has heard the unsettling and sometimes horrifying tales of people having the police or security called on them while shopping, walking, or being at their place of work. Heck, even by simply owning a golden retriever.

Racial profiling can seriously hurt a person’s self-esteem and make them lose faith in humanity. And as it turns out, it also has a hidden and much more common danger — long-term health problems. “There are enormous health consequences to those experiencing these everyday harms … because of the constancy of this stress,” Rachel Godsil of the Perception Institute, a research group that helps organizations reduce discrimination, told CNN. You see, minority groups who endure everyday discrimination often suffer high rates of chronic diseases.

Godsil explained racial profiling has a broad ripple effect on everyone. “Even if it happens to someone that doesn’t look like you, it’s a harm to the community,” she explained. As an example, she said that many calls about “suspicious” activities are just a person of color walking down the street. This wastes officers’ time and resources, which could otherwise be spent protecting communities from actual harm.

Unfortunately, racial profiling is a longstanding and alarming problem that many innocent people have become subject to. While stories like this one are just the tip of the iceberg of what people of color have to live through daily, it raises awareness and shows how important it is to know and stand by your rights. And let’s hope it will also teach some people (looking at you, employees of Citibank) to be better human beings.

People were baffled by the bank’s actions, here’s what they had to say

Something fishy about this story: 1 - Checks have the routing number already printed on them... why would she tell the cashier to call her dad and get the routing number? 2 - You can't "just go somewhere else" to cash a check. You need to have an account there. How many bank accounts does this girl have? 3 - Checks are verified by automated systems that scan the account # and routing # 4 - When you deposit a check into your account, the bank will hold most if not all of the funds until the check clears. Usually a day or 2. No bank will just fork over the money - there is always a wait time for large amounts. 5 - No bank calls for a prison style lock down of the entire building when they doubt the authenticity of the check. The don't have to - if the check is bad, they will simply not deposit the money in your account Sorry gang - this whole thing sounds like a desperate publicity stunt. I call b******t. PS, I'm black and spent 9 years in the finance industry. This is not about race.

You're spot-on. The video of the interaction used to be posted, but she took it down because people saw how in the wrong she really was. Here's what I remember. 1) She absolutely did ask to "cash" a $30,000 personal check. 2) The teller told her that they would have to "hold it" NOT "confiscate it" until the funds cleared. 3) The security gate was closed because it was 5 p.m. and they were closing for the day. 4) The only said that they would call the authorities when she refused to leave. 5) Of course a bank isn't stoked about her filming in there -- that's a huge security flag and can eff with their insurance.

For what? Coming up with a fake story? Sorry, but she's just ridiculous and it had nothing to do with race. No bank is going to let someone cash a $30k check that they can't verify. It also doesn't make sense that her dad wouldn't write the check to the landlord and that the landlord would accept $30k in cash.

I feel like Bored Panda missed posting parts of the story, I feel like there is more. Also the person should have no problem depositing a check. They hold all checks over 1k for ten days usually. You cannot immediately withdraw, is it possible she misunderstood the "hold" part

She wasn't trying to withdraw. She was trying to cash her check. Yes, they can say it is suspicious and report you to the IRS or refuse to cash the check. However, they can't confiscate the check and lock you inside.

lol I work in finance and there's no way I would just cash a 30K personal cheque on someone's say so over the phone. There is zero recourse on a personal cheque. Now if dear old daddy had sent a *purchased* bank draft (with accompanying paperwork of the purchase) that could be bank verified... that's another story. But lmao, a personal cheque?

They should have explained it differently, because of the amount $30,000, they are not going to take anyones word for it and cash it. She needs to deposit it and wait for it to clear

Anti Money Laundering Procedure. You can deposit the check, but it will take time to clear. Seriously if you don't know the difference between "cashing" and "depositing" you are going to have a hard time; doesn't matter what your shade of skin.

Doesn't a bank have the ability to contact another bank to ensure that amount of money would clear the account? Wouldn't that have solved the problem? This whole situation is disgusting. I hope that woman gets some justice.

billybatson avatar

The whole situation was set up by the girl for attention. She went right before closing most likely so that it couldn't be verified and she could raise a stink. No bank would cash a $30k check for a girl whose account didn't have enough funds to cover 1/12 that amount. No girl (or almost none) is going to walk out of a bank with $30k in her pocket. And no landlord is going to take that much money in cash unless they have a drug dealing side business. If she gets justice, it'll be being exposed as a fraud.

Not everything is racial profiling. Same goes with the Black Panther director. He didn't mean to act suspicious, but he did.... even had his friends waiting right outside the bank's door with the motor running... you know... after he wrote a note on the back of a deposit slip just like bank robbers are known to do. That one was REALLY hilarious because the teller who questioned his withdrawal was black.

Generator busted while I was out of town at a Drs appointment - repair tech came and dad gave him a cheque to buy a new one. Not implausible in older folk

Any deposits over $10,000 have to be investigated. That's common knowledge. You can't cash checks for money you don't have in your account. If you had enough money to cash the check, you didn't need to cash the check. Not too many landlords take 12 months rent in cash. If she's as successful as she claims, why is Daddy paying her rent...and a year at a time at that?

Lots of unanswered questions here but normally banks don’t give cash for that amount. They usually issue you a cashiers check if you are paying someone that kind of money but maybe I am misunderstanding and she means she needed to deposit the check.

i’m confused because she says she did not actually want cash for the check; she wanted to deposit it into her account, but she's upset that the teller "confiscated" the check. when you deposit, the bank usually takes the check, verifies the check, etc. so if she really wasn't trying to "walk out with $30,000 in cash", why didn’t she want the teller to keep the check? i think the check was not written against a citibank account (she has an account at that bank, but not her father) and any bank is gonna do their internal investigations and whatnot to verify a check before they issue funds for it.

In what appears to be a quote it says she wanted to cash it. Cash or deposit, if the bank had refused either (which seems very much in doubt) the check would still be her property and the bank would have no valid reason to keep it.

There's a lot of speculation in the comments here, but for all those who think that the amount of money in question could not have been a factor here, let me take you back in time 6 yrs ago when my FIL was gifting us a 30k down payment for a house. We went to the bank my FIL had used for over a decade to get the cashier's check and were treated like criminals. The bankers were hostile and reluctant, warning us that "the government will see what you're doing here" and "you'll have to pay taxes on that" (spoiler: no, I didn't) all while giving us the side eye. They didn't have a clue, but for them the size of the check was enough to confirm we were up to no good.

Too many of you are deciding what you want to hear and that what was heard. They refuse to deposit the check because they said that they could not verify it she offered naively to do what she could to verify it they said that they couldn't and they were not going to deposit it or return it that was the problem. If they had just deposited that would have been no problem. The teller refused to deposit it because in the teller's mind it was suspicious but she did nothing to alleviate her suspicion. Then because she knew that her actions were wrong she again tried to get her to destroy the video tape of her actions.

You can only "cash" a check at the bank which issued it (so in this case, her dad's bank in New York). Otherwise you must deposit it, wait as it's held for it to clear, and then get the funds. I'm thinking this is a verbage snafu. She kept saying "cash" it, meaning one thing (she wanted to deposit it), and they kept using "cash" in a different way (thinking she wanted them to hand her the worth of the check in cash)

People of African descent please stop going to Citibank there have been too many incidents of racial discrimination from Citibank Nationwide. So it's a company problem. You don't owe them your business there are plenty of the banks to go to. Cross City Bank off of your list. If you Google Citibank and racial discrimination there are multiple cases of them refusing to cash checks from people of African descent for no other reason than there are people of African descent. This is f**king insane and I hope that those employees all got fired and never able to work again in banking. And I hope she gets so much money from Citibank they reconsider how they hire people because clearly you can't have an entire staff act like that without some institutional horseshit allowing these kinds of people to be on the job. So we need to show these companies that tolerating or encouraging this kind of bigotry from their staff is going to cost them much more than it ever would making sure they hire people who know how to not to behave like rabid animals.

Locked you in?! Girl! That is *super* illegal. It's against the fire safety protocol. At least in Europe. But even in the USA, it must be the same. You *cannot* lock the main exit with people inside. It's a health and safety hazard. That alone is already lawsuit material. Then the racial profiling. I don't know the procedure for potentially fraudulent checks, them taking it away might be legal. But you can definitely start with the door and work from there.

Sue the F out of them. This is just outrageous. That teller knew she was in the wrong and tried to bully op into deleting the evidence showing the teller’s illegal actions. If they can’t cash a check they have to return it to you, except if it’s flagged as fraudulent (not their opinion, but actually flagged in the system). And holding her captive inside the bank is 10000% unreasonable and probably illegal.

So many people quick to say "Well I'm black and ..." If you have to clarify your race before you say something you already know you're somewhere you are not supposed to be. either you're a black person who likes to jump on bandwagons and show you're "one of the good ones" or you're saying you're black because you think that gives you an excuse to talk out of pocket. Either way, you're not contributing to the conversation and when you see something that does not concern you... KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT

fyi, i said i'm black because i want it to be known that i am black, and i am standing in the belief that there are MANY things not right with this story. too often when somebody comes out in disagreement with these stories, it is automatically assumed they're a non-poc ... well, i am a poc, specifically black, and i say there is too much wrong here to automatically eat this lady's every word. if we sat idly and didn't voice opposition or ask questions when things seemed shady, the fraudsters would continue lying, and eventually nobody would believe true victims of these very injustices. also, i don't jump on bandwagons; typically i pay attention to clear facts, use common sense and i don't just sip from random teacups offered to me. also, is there a meter or gauge somewhere i should consult to determine whether something concerns me? i want to be absolutely certain of the right time to keep my mouth shut on this very public forum.

I think it was more the amount of the check rather than a racist issue. You couldn't really say from this information that the banks actions were racial unless you could show they were accepting checks for that amount from white people without question. It could have been racial profiling but nothing in this information proves that

It's hardly unusual for a bank to handle a check of that size, it probably happens quite frequently for commercial accounts and people who do contract work. If a check clears, it clears, the amount is of no consequence to them.

So many things. 1. You cannot photograph or video in a bank. This is true for any FDIC-insured bank. 2. Was she trying to cash or deposit it? 1) False. You can record in a bank, that is 100% false. THere is zero connected to FDIC and recording in any legal way. FDIC is just the federal govt way of ensuring if the bank goes under, your money is protected. You made that up and is a lie. Recording depends on the party consent laws of your state. Further once a party threatens legal action, many two party consent states allow you to record single party. the majority of the USA this recording is 100% legal. 2) its not the bank handled it poorly, the teller tried to ILLEGALLY confiscate a check, only law enforcement can do. That is legally theft and a felony! additionally trying to lock the door is another felony without police permission, called "False imprisonment". Dont make up BS because you dont know what you are talking about

Now if dear old daddy had sent a *purchased* bank draft (with accompanying paperwork of the purchase) that could be bank verified... that's another story. But lmao, a personal cheque?

They usually issue you a cashiers check if you are paying someone that kind of money but maybe I am misunderstanding and she means she needed to deposit the check.

kimberlypatterson avatar

i’m confused because she says she did not actually want cash for the check; she wanted to deposit it into her account, but she's upset that the teller "confiscated" the check. when you deposit, the bank usually takes the check, verifies the check, etc. so if she really wasn't trying to "walk out with $30,000 in cash", why didn’t she want the teller to keep the check? i think the check was not written against a citibank account (she has an account at that bank, but not her father) and any bank is gonna do their internal investigations and whatnot to verify a check before they issue funds for it.

So many people quick to say "Well I'm black and ..." If you have to clarify your race before you say something you already know you're somewhere you are not supposed to be. either you're a black person who likes to jump on bandwagons and show you're "one of the good ones" or you're saying you're black because you think that gives you an excuse to talk out of pocket. fyi, i said i'm black because i want it to be known that i am black, and i am standing in the belief that there are MANY things not right with this story. too often when somebody comes out in disagreement with these stories, it is automatically assumed they're a non-poc ... well, i am a poc, specifically black, and i say there is too much wrong here to automatically eat this lady's every word. if we sat idly and didn't voice opposition or ask questions when things seemed shady, the fraudsters would continue lying, and eventually nobody would believe true victims of these very injustices. also, i don't jump on bandwagons; typically i pay attention to clear facts, use common sense and i don't just sip from random teacups offered to me. also, is there a meter or gauge somewhere i should consult to determine whether something concerns me? i want to be absolutely certain of the right time to keep my mouth shut on this very public forum.

I think it was more the amount of the check rather than a racist issue. You couldn't really say from this information that the banks actions were racial unless you could show they were accepting checks for that amount from white people without question. It's hardly unusual for a bank to handle a check of that size, it probably happens quite frequently for commercial accounts and people who do contract work. If a check clears, it clears, the amount is of no consequence to them.
