Man Invents Biodegradable Algae Water Bottles As A Green Alternative To Plastic
Know how long a plastic water bottle can take to decompose? Up to 1000 years. Know how many bottles of water America alone drinks in a single year? approximately 50 billion.
Scared yet? You should be, because unless we start firing our garbage out of giant cannons and into the sun, it’s safe to say that some day soon we’re all going to be living on one great big floating ball of trash.
It’s a pretty bleak prospect, but thanks to people like Icelandic Product Designer Ari Jónsson, such a grimly apocalyptic scenario could be avoided if we all just got a little greener. Take his water bottle for example. It’s made from algal, a product of algae. It’s 100% natural and 100% biodegradable. It keeps its shape until it’s empty and then it begins to decompose.
Ari exhibited his project during this year’s Reykjavik design festival DesignMarch. Let’s just hope that major manufacturers take some inspiration from his brilliant invention. Otherwise, the future will look like Wall-E. But not nearly as cute.

Share on FacebookHow long does it take to decompose and how long would it last if it was filled? Does it change the taste of the liqiud contents?
Do I have a dirty mind or... do these bottles look like used condoms at some stage of their decomposition ?... :))
Brilliant thinking. I like using my own glass, but if I was traveling and had to buy a water in emergency thirst, I would by this.
with this we acually have a chance to stop polluting!
Load More Replies...I don't think so. I bet they'll find a solution for this too while developing this product further.
Load More Replies...Clever, however algae is also a resource. If all plastic bottles are replaced with this, we will probably face the same problem as with cutting trees. Increase of CO2 etc. Unless of course they grow up REALLY fast and can be cultivated. If they can't, I think that recycling plastic bottles is a workable solution. Just don't throw them away! Recycle.
Michael Brandon your talking utter c**p we have a massive litter and waste problem on earth open your eyes
This is amazing! It really shows that there are things we can do to change the future but we're in a way putting it on the long finger. Although there are many people who are working so hard to change things
There are a number of obstacles to make this a success. The biggest one is convincing retailers to stock this rather than the plastic versions, profit will always be their 1st goal and if its not selling it has little chance. Personally I think the law needs to enforce a policy to give it any chance of success.
This is a very smart invention, but to be honest I don't know if I would drink out of it
Eheheh. Of course they will fix the aesthetics once this reaches the market and mass-producrion (and if). It will probably look just like other plastic bottles, but with a sticker saying "eco friendly", or something like that. And then it will make customers suspicious because they won't feel the difference. Well, I might be wrong, but this is how I immagine it.

Yes but what about the air pollution and fossil fuels? plastic is made of oil which is soon to run out. Have you seen road sides in poverty stricken areas where there isn't a dumping area? Please don't just call the idea stupid and move on, the message is that this person invented something that is more efficient and won't run out.
