Bill Nye Makes A PSA On TikTok About How Effective Different Face Masks Are, Goes Viral

As the coronavirus continues to spread, some people are still debating whether they should wear face masks. So Bill Nye the Science Guy showed his audience just how effective wearing masks is in a couple of TikTok videos that certainly got the world’s attention. “This is a matter literally of life and death,” he said.

In the videos, the 64-year-old TV personality conducted a simple demonstration to explain why he and the scientific community want others to wears masks in public spaces. He blew on a candle to see how much the flame moves after he covers his face with a scarf, a two-layer cotton mask, and then an N-95 mask. Scroll down to see just what the results were! (A small heads-up, dear Pandas—one part of the second video may get a bit Bilbo-from-LotR-wants-Frodo’s-ring intense.)

More info: TikTok | Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | BillNye.com

Bill Nye the Science Guy showed the world just how effective face masks are with a simple demonstration in two TikTok videos

And here’s the second one!

Bill and the scientific community want you to wear face masks in public spaces. Here’s why!

Bill less-than-subtly pointed out that nobody wants particles from somebody else’s respiratory system from getting into their own respiratory system during the Covid-19 pandemic. He also stressed that when he says it’s “literally” a matter of life and death, he used the word “literally” literally.

The scientist’s two videos got around 12 million combined views since he posted them on Wednesday. What’s more, they’re so on-point that even the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, shared them on Twitter. “Listen to Bill Nye,” he wrote.

In an earlier interview, Bored Panda spoke about why some Americans don’t wear face masks with infectious disease specialist Dr. Peter Chin-Hong of UC San Francisco. He said that the virus is a medical, not a political issue despite some people believing otherwise. “The virus doesn’t care how you vote—it just wants to get in your nose or mouth!” he said.

“Ultimately, the scientific literature supports the use of policy with enforcement if we would like more people to wear masks,” Dr. Chin-Hong explained. “So far, this has been patchwork in the US with some states having orders and many states without such mandates. We need a national, not a regional approach.”

He outlined some possible interventions that could get people to change their minds and take wearing masks seriously. “Other interventions that have been suggested include appealing to patriotism (like how masking was messaged in the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic in the US), more marketing (public service announcement blitz, more endorsement from celebrities like Lady Gaga and others, branding of masks by fashion houses and sports teams), and community cultural change. In the US, more women than men wear masks and public messaging must also include interventions aimed specifically at men.”

This is what people had to say after watching the Sciency Guy’s TikToks

I am so saddened by the stupidity of a section of the American population who think that wearing a mask is a violation of their rights, what a bunch of tossers. Will they be screaming blue murder when they get sick or their loved ones die because of their inalienable right to be F-wits?

My family and I just experienced a health scare last night. We had to take my dad to the ER because he was having trouble breathing. My dad is a kidney transplant patient and we live in Texas, which has had a large number of cases of COVID19. My father's immune system is already very weak and it would kill my family if he got this illness because we didn't at least try to protect him. Thankfully, he didn't have covid, but I still will not risk his life or anyone else's just because someone on the internet told me not to. My father is not the only member of my family who is sick. One of my aunts has cancer and another is a dialysis patient. There has been a case discovered at my aunt's dialysis clinic and now she is self quarantining. My aunt with cancer is my dad's sister and he can't even go see her. In fact, he hasn't left his home in over two months. Yes, mask are uncomfortable, but please please do what you can to protect the immunocompromised like these people in my family.

Here in some parts of Australia you're advised to wear one while on public transport, especially if you're unfortunate enough to be in one of the locked down zones, which I am :(

Mask wearing is an implicit social contract; "I will wear this mask to protect you and your loved ones, in the hope that you will wear your mask to protect me, and the people I love." If enough people wear the masks, the spread of Covid 19 is slowed, and the risk is reduced for everyone. When you don't wear your mask in the supermarket, or on the bus, the risk for the people around you goes up. So does the risk to everyone they will come into contact with, and their contacts, throughout the population. When you don't wear a mask, you increase the risk to everyone, everywhere, including the high-risk people you do care about. When you don't wear a mask, you break the social contract, and other people will be less likely to wear a mask also, and the risk increases for you.

I mentioned this before on a different article, but in Japan people started wearing face masks way back in January, at the very beginning of the pandemic. They have an extremely low infection rate (21,129) and death rate (982) from Covid-19, or 8 deaths per million people. This is in a very dense population of more than 126 million people on two small islands. Infection and death rates from Covid-19 are far, far higher in countries where very few people wear them.

If you’re so freaking worried about protecting yourself with a mask then you wear one. If you can’t breathe out of the mask then you sure as the hell can’t breathe in the mask. Which means that if I sneeze it’s not getting in your mouth! If it is, then you’re sneezing out isn’t protecting me!

Leo, viruses have no way of moving by themselves. The only way they move at all is by droplets we cough out or exhale. So legitimate N95 masks are extremely effective in stopping COVID. This antiscience bs is what's killing us.

There is a literal video showing you how masks help and you're still in denial bc you have to retain your narrative or you'll die. You have proved everyone's point on people like you and you still have your eyes closed. Why can't you believe your very own eyes. You hate yourself that much that you can't rely on your own eyes so u needs politicians to tell u what to think. This is so funny and tragically sad for you. It is slightly inconvenient to wear a mask, however, it is much more inconvenient catching Covid-19, or passing it on to someone you will wish were still alive. Keep your distance - for our future existence.

@MetjeFitness @LeonieAlone, don't post this here! It's NSFW and I don't think anybody on Bored Panda wants to see it. So don't post stuff like this again!

It's a little tough to listen to a Mechanical Engineer preach about this. What are his credentials to do so? Thomas Dolby dressed as a Scientist, lets get him to chime in.

Didn't BoredPanda write a scathing article on the dangers of Tiktok and why we should immediately uninstall it? Uh, well what's this then.

The same people who are using Chinese TikTok and think it's safe are the one who don't think wearing a mask is necessary.

A friend of mine's mom has COPD. She is on oxygen 24/7 and has been at home since the start of lockdown (106 days). I empathise with your plight, but don't risk your health by going out.

Bill nye doesnt even have a degree in science. The covid 19 particles are smaller than water droplets and can pass through a 3m n95 mask. Mask arent the solution..staying home/ staying atleast 6 ft away is

Leo, viruses have no way of moving by themselves. The only way they move at all is by droplets we cough out or exhale. So legitimate N95 masks are extremely effective in stopping COVID. This antiscience bs is what's killing us.

Can you all stop being a bunch of karens...masks do not protect you from me. If i coughed in my mask the smaller covid 19 particles are still coming out. The only thing that might be stopped is the water droplets. Sure a mask is better than nothing...but it isnt as effective as bill nye tried to demonstrate So can we stfu about people not wearing mask and how stupid they are. Can we stop being karens

Karen, if you had any grasp of actual science, you would understand how wrong you are. The good news? You can seek education on this awesome "interweb" thing. You don't have to die from your ignorance.

What is the point no seriously we are told we are in this for the long haul so what's the point le joy life today instead of staying in existing. I think it's about being sensible but this wear a mask thing should be up to individual choice, those that are saying this is selfish, no, your just pissed because they are not doing what you want.

Nye is an actor, not a scientist. He has a BS in Physical Education and is not a Ph.D. He's a kids TV personality.

bill shows that air flow is restricted... congrats! but what he doesn't show is how those small viral organisms can still pass through that LARGE micron sized cloth... point is moot.

I hope u gain some confidence w yourself one day
