Guy Buys Ugly Betta Fish That Is So Neglected It Starts To Rot In Petsmart, Completely Transforms Her
Fish make great pets! They are cute, sociable and have great personalities of their own, while an aquarium can make a beautiful addition to any home.
This guy agrees. He REALLY likes his fish. Addressing the pet store he got his new betta fish (also known as Siamese fighting fish) from, his profanity laced rant, in defence of the fish he felt was grievously disrespected by the staff there, is just glorious.
When he went to Petsmart to pick up his new pet, it’s fair to say he was not impressed with what he found there. And he did not hold back! Perhaps he was still emotional from the passing of his previous best buddy, who described as “fierce AF”. This fish, also a betta, had recently died in tragic circumstances. “Goddamn bladder infection took him too soon man. Too soon.”
We just love to see somebody as passionate about their pets as this guy is, and the fact that he writes in such a hilariously colloquial manner, on the random platform of Craigslist for some reason, just makes it all the better. The lucky fish, so disrespected by the pet store, is now doing great under his care, so it’s a happy ending for all involved! I grew up with a fossilis cat fish. My mom bought him when she was a student. He celebrated an 18th birthday and I was so sad when he died(RIP, Pancho). I was 14 at the time. Don't think that just because it's a fish it doesn't deserve to be cared for and loved. It's got it's own unique personality, it's special, it's a pet, just like any other. If you love your iguana, parakeet or fancy rat, then you can love a fish as well.
Exactly. My father-in-law got an Oscar fish and he was the funniest thing ever. Whenever I'd go over to the house and sit by the tank, he'd spit rocks at the tank wall to get my attention and then we'd make faces at each other. It was hilarious! He was the best fish friend I've ever had. I miss that big guy.

I used to hate how fighting fish were kept in my local petsathome (fortunately better now). They were in yoghurt-pot sized pots on a rack and would frequently jump out. When I was about 7/8 I saw a little boy waiting for them to jump out then stamping on them and I punched him so hard. I wouldn't leave until my mum and I gave the staff a piece of our minds.

Really sweet! When I was 10 or something I had a betta named Blue. He would swim up and eat from my hand, and like this guy here would let you pet him. Bettas are beautiful fish, and great pets. Although I have to say, isn’t this fish a he, not a she? Females don’t really have guns like that.
I used to think fish were a bit boring, but then I met one. A wild one. In Fiji when I went swimming with a snorkel I came across some small fish hiding in a bed of anemone. One was shy and frantically worried about her bolder partner who kept swimming up to my hand and circling it in what i realised was a game. It was the most fun I've had in salt water. I now respect fish. They're awesome little buddies.
That is the worst way you can treat a pet. Just because the color or something is displeasing, doesn’t mean you can let it die! That is extremely rude! You are so kind to have taken in that beautiful fish!
I did a similar thing years ago. I found a sorry-looking tiny goldfish in a tank with much larger fish--he was in there to be food for the others. A few years later, that tiny feeder fish became a giant glorious golden goldfish that was a good 8 inches long.
My boyfriend and I save fish from Petsmart all the time. We had 12 beta fish at once. And of course, they have to stay separated, so it was a mess but totally worth it. One of them only had one eye. They really don't give a f**k about their fish.
Loved this guy's post -- he has such a passion for his "non-fur" pets. A faithful steward of that lucky, little Beta fish. I only found out recently, how abused Beta's are as pets. They are "throw away" pets. Finally, they tend to be neglected wherever they are before purchase. When brought home they are mistakenly kept isolated. They are believed to be "fighting fish" and not tolerant of any other type of fish. They can live with other fish. Females can live with each other. Males Betas can live with other non-Betas. Petsmart really should only be in the pet supply business. I believe the order of their pet caregiving gets laxer the smaller and less furry the animals are. When you cannot see yourself in something, it becomes more challenging to care for it.
I think the worst part about how Bettas are cared for is the tiny bowls they are often put in, even after purchased. And with little to no decoration. They can hardly swim around, and have nowhere to explore or hide.

I despise the way pet stores keep fish and promote their poor care. There is no fish that should be housed in less than five gallons, so those tiny little betta tanks should not even be on store shelves and just because betta are capable of living in small bodies of water during dry seasons does not mean that is their typical environment. They should not be kept that way.
Absolutely agreed! Selling those tiny tanks as being "perfect for betta fish" should be illegal. Betta need space, and betta need decoration to explore and hide.

Bettas are beautiful fish when given warm enough water and enough space to swim. A buddy once used this analogy- humans could survive in a cold closet, but would you want to? Bettas survive drought in its natural habitat, it doesn't permanently live in that condition.
PetSmart doesn't hire animal experts: they hire clerks who like animals. Rather like a hospital hiring clerks who like medicine, rather than doctors who know about it.
I think that the worst part is that large pet shops also sell other animals such as cats and dogs. I don't know anything about PetSmart but it sounds a lot like the local Zoocenter. Their kittens, puppies and other fluffy animals must come from all kinds of places, including puppy mills and are sold at unbelievable prices. My friend's mother saved a female jack russell and she's still depressed and scared because of living in a glass aquarium as a puppy even though she's now 5 years old. I can give an account that they sometimes slap puppies with some of the company's other shops if no one is interested in the poor things. And, everything is so much more expensive in these shops! They are just looking for profit and if one considers himself/herself a responsible pet owner, he/she should never set foot in these stores.

I worked at a P***mart many years ago as a teen. Let me tell you this... this corporation sees the animals they as product. It was the main reason I quit. I could tell you some true horror stories. For me the straw that broke the camels back was an anole who was egg bound. When I said she needed to go to the vet for proper treatment, they told me the vet visit was worth more than the animal so she wouldn't go. This was just one horror story. DON'T BUY LIVE PETS from these stores. Trust me. There is an unbelievable amount of cross contamination that goes on there. Stuff that can be transmitted to you and your other pets. Ringworm, wet tail, mites. Just to name a few. Overall, not good for you or the animals in store. Wish they would not sell animals in these stores.

You bought yourself a ray a sunshine that is forever grateful and thankful to you... as are we. :D! :D! Your compassion and caring for him is an example many can follow. Another great thing you did in your well-stated rant is name PetSmart. The salesperson who said that should be fired or at least not work with the public any more. The entire pet staff have to pass tests before working in the section of the store. Many people don't care about pets but rather care about cleaning products. Fine. Let them work in that section. No one or store has the right to treat ANY creature in this manner. It's sick and degrading to all. Bettas, like many other fish, DO have their own personalities and are very, very, cool! I also had one recently die on me too soon because of a bladder infection. Still sad about it. Lovely little guy, the exact opposite of this guy's old one, lived with a female and other fish without ever trying to bother anyone. Bit of a scaredy cat, never got too close to my hand. Now I only have two girls, they are much braver than he ever was, let me pet then, come when I call, super active. Female bettas are full of charm too.

It's great that the fish is recovering so well but treating fishes (or other animals) like commodities is wrong and causes immense suffering and death. Science has shown that fishes are sentient, they suffer fear and pain. They deserve our respect and compassion. Supporting the trade in live animals is supporting harmful animal exploitation. Don't patronize stores that sell animals, protest them! It's great he called them out on their cruelty.

It's a cute article, but buying animals from places like Petsmart etc only encourages one of the filthiest, cruelest trades in the business. You might want to do some research on the conditions ALL the animals in pet shops come from, where they are "raised," how they are transported. It would make a maggot gag. These animals, from fish to birds, to geckos, to guinea pigs if they could only speak would beg you to STOP BUYING ANY LIVING THINGS from PetSmart or ANY pet shop. Just stop!

These Bettas are male fish. The females have short fins and less color. Beauty he is! Congratulations on your new buddy!
They have short fins, but the less color part is not true. They come in every color just the males. I've had a beige/white male and have a pink and purple female and one with pastel red, green and yellow colors. They even breed bettas of the same colors to keep the colors going. Female bettas are beautiful too!

Male Siamese fish is famous for his beautiful tail and fins. To keep the fish agile and to make him spread his tail and fins, place a mirror nearby so he thinks he has an enemy. When he gets angry and ready to attack the 'enemy' he will spread his tail and fins. Do it regularly.

You rock! We always buy the ugliest betta. We know nobody will buy them and love them. They blossomed into amazing fish. One lived 4.5 years! So much personality! Fester, Booger, Wally- rest well in fish heaven. We now have " Spooky" named such because he came home with us on Halloween. Always pick the underdog, er, fish.

The betta we adopted from petsmart had fin rot to. He’s doing great now and he’s grown bigger and more vibrant.

Years & years ago my mother bought a Llasa puppy. Took him to the Vet. right away for first check up. He was full of worms. He had bilateral ear infections. He had an elevated temperature. He couldn't regulate his temp. His temp. went up & down. He cried & cried. Whimpering he would drag himself to the water & look. He wouldn't drink, or eat. Mama spoke with the Vet. again. One of the tests showed that his bowls weren't functioning properly. His eyes were blurry with a film over them. His eyes ran. He we Miserable. She couldn't stand by anymore. They went to the Vet. again - for the last time. He was a PETLAND-Puppy. Mama called him "Tuffy". Poor guy had to be.
I remember my first Betta, Spike, he loved to be petted (I just stick my finger at the surface and he would go back and forth), if I did not greet him right away when I go home he would splash around his tank til I said hi to him. He love to chase the algae eater that live with him but he would never hurt him. Sadly I lost him after a while, but I raised him from a baby. Over the years I had Betta's off and on. Each one had its own personality/ My last one I had for several years loved his blood worms and enjoyed picking on the snail that lived with him.
Everyone keeps calling this fish a her, but I am pretty sure it's a him.
That's a male fish. I used to raise them. the female lays the eggs, and the male blows them into the bubble nest he builds.
I have three parrot cichlids and their personalities are so vibrant! Snapper is the biggest one and likes making sculptures with the pebbles (making valleys, mountains, and hills), Summer is sweet and gentle, while Freckles is mischievious and likes messing with Snapper while he's building. They're quite fun to watch!

Aside from the fact that that's a him, not a her (male blows the nest, not the female--I raised the suckers as a school project and NEVER AGAIN, the fry are a pain to raise!) I loved the rant. But--'didn't want to be alone in my room again'? Oo-kay.
I loved the ending. I always asked for the betta fish that were here for a while because half of them end up with fin rot and one died 3 months later but at least it survived for 2 months more than I thought it would.
Wonderful! I just got my first beta fish and can say now say with certainty that fish are just as personable as any other pet! My little one has a little bedroom he goes to, and as soon as he sees me he comes swimming right up to me for food :)
I had a betta once! We named her/him Blue moon, I loved him and cried for like a day when he died, then we got a fish at the fair for free and DAMN this gold fish was a beast! He seemed really happy in his small fish bowl! I do feel really bad because I didn’t always remember to feed him but he held on for 3 years! One time I forgot to feed him for 1 months and he was still as happy as ever but I still feel bad for not feeding him.

It makes me feel so happy, that you took in this fish because no one else wanted it. Out of all the other beautiful fish that were probably there. The world would be such a great place if only everyone cared for pets as much as you.
I love this guy & support him in everyway! I have shared this post on my Facebook and also commented on it because I agree with his rant and wish I would have wanted about it sooner myself. What a good hearted human being that guy is.
He did no favor to the fish that will replace that one he took. Animals at pet stores come from terrible conditions. If you buy an animal at such store, you give money to animal abusers who will just breed another five miserable animals to replace the one you bought. And it will never end.
Just because you can't save every fish, doesn't mean you should just let that one rot. What else do you suggest? He can't just steal the fish. At least over here, even if he tried to report their cruelty, nobody would care because, unfortunately, it's just a fish. I'm not sure if in the US there actually is anything you can do about it.

The sad thing is, most of the bettas bought from chain stores end up in similer containers to the ones they are in the store.
The ones sold now are 1-2 gallons, with appropriate 'stuff' for the fish. The ones that annoy ME are those flower vase ones, where people are told, no, of course, you don't have to feed it. It lives on the plant. The fish don't last long...

He most likely took the fish to a vet which then told him the fish had a bladder infection. He never said that he concluded the fish's diagnosis himself. And there is no way of knowing how true this is, but it is likely that fish was neglected because of its looks. You can't just go around calling everything fake.

I remember my first Betta, Spike, he loved to be petted (I just stick my finger at the surface and he would go back and forth), if I did not greet him right away when I go home he would splash around his tank til I said hi to him. He love to chase the algae eater that live with him but he would never hurt him. Sadly I lost him after a while, but I raised him from a baby. Over the years I had Betta's off and on. Each one had its own personality/ My last one I had for several years loved his blood worms and enjoyed picking on the snail that lived with him.
Everyone keeps calling this fish a her, but I am pretty sure it's a him.
That's a male fish. I used to raise them. the female lays the eggs, and the male blows them into the bubble nest he builds.
I have three parrot cichlids and their personalities are so vibrant! Snapper is the biggest one and likes making sculptures with the pebbles (making valleys, mountains, and hills), Summer is sweet and gentle, while Freckles is mischievious and likes messing with Snapper while he's building. They're quite fun to watch!

Aside from the fact that that's a him, not a her (male blows the nest, not the female--I raised the suckers as a school project and NEVER AGAIN, the fry are a pain to raise!) I loved the rant. But--'didn't want to be alone in my room again'? Oo-kay.
I loved the ending. I always asked for the betta fish that were here for a while because half of them end up with fin rot and one died 3 months later but at least it survived for 2 months more than I thought it would.
Wonderful! I just got my first beta fish and can say now say with certainty that fish are just as personable as any other pet! My little one has a little bedroom he goes to, and as soon as he sees me he comes swimming right up to me for food :)
I had a betta once! We named her/him Blue moon, I loved him and cried for like a day when he died, then we got a fish at the fair for free and DAMN this gold fish was a beast! He seemed really happy in his small fish bowl! I do feel really bad because I didn’t always remember to feed him but he held on for 3 years! One time I forgot to feed him for 1 months and he was still as happy as ever but I still feel bad for not feeding him.
Great job, Pet smart has alot to learn from you. Pet Smart stop abusing your pets, yes fish are pets and have feelings!!!! Makes me so mad! Thanks for saving him...:)
It makes me feel so happy, that you took in this fish because no one else wanted it. Out of all the other beautiful fish that were probably there. The world would be such a great place if only everyone cared for pets as much as you.
I love this guy & support him in everyway! I have shared this post on my Facebook and also commented on it because I agree with his rant and wish I would have wanted about it sooner myself. What a good hearted human being that guy is.
He did no favor to the fish that will replace that one he took. Animals at pet stores come from terrible conditions. If you buy an animal at such store, you give money to animal abusers who will just breed another five miserable animals to replace the one you bought. And it will never end.
Just because you can't save every fish, doesn't mean you should just let that one rot. What else do you suggest? He can't just steal the fish. At least over here, even if he tried to report their cruelty, nobody would care because, unfortunately, it's just a fish. I'm not sure if in the US there actually is anything you can do about it.
Load More Replies... The sad thing is, most of the bettas bought from chain stores end up in similer containers to the ones they are in the store.
The ones sold now are 1-2 gallons, with appropriate 'stuff' for the fish. The ones that annoy ME are those flower vase ones, where people are told, no, of course, you don't have to feed it. It lives on the plant. The fish don't last long...

Load More Replies... He most likely took the fish to a vet which then told him the fish had a bladder infection. He never said that he concluded the fish's diagnosis himself. And there is no way of knowing how true this is, but it is likely that fish was neglected because of its looks. You can't just go around calling everything fake.
Load More Replies... Then explain to me why I have also experienced seeing this at PetSmart? Does the water normally turn so dirty within day two of they are changed every two days? I don't think so. Then explain to me why the water has been dirty when I have been at the store?
