I do that and I’m a mom and grandma. I do it because I’ve usually got heavy music playing loud enough to damage ear drums and I turn it down when I need to concentrate.

I'm not a dad, but I've done that. The music competes w/ the part of the brain that needs to focus on certain things...some of us can't hear ourselves think w/ the radio playing. It's about isolating stimuli. Relatedly, I remember being able to write essays while listening to music that was instrumental or in another language I didn't understand, but not if it were sung in English. It was like listening to two people talk at once (the song & me talking in my head)...a complete cacaphony. On the other hand, I was able to do my math homework with ANY kind of music on, since it uses another part of the brain for processing.
