Fargo

Fargo

1996 | 1 hour 38 minutes | Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen

Starring William H. Macy, Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi

Fargo is a black comedy crime film following a story of a disappointed family man and car salesman, Jerry Lundegaard, and his path to total demise by ordering the kidnapping of his wife for a hefty ransom from her wealthy father. The plan goes very awry, and now it's the cue for Marge Gunderson, a heavily pregnant Minnesota police chief, to solve the crime. Frances McDormand's Marge is probably one of the most memorable characters in cinema, but that isn't the only good thing about Fargo - the story here is both unexpected yet realistic, the cinematography by the legendary Roger Deakins is spellbinding, and the touch of humor is of the absolute highest quality.

Young Frankenstein

Young Frankenstein

1974 | 1 hour 46 minutes | Directed by Mel Brooks

Starring Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman

Young Frankenstein is a comedy horror film and a parody of the classic horror movie genre, especially the various adaptations of Mary Shelley's 1818 Frankenstein. Here, a grandson of the infamous scientist is struggling to prove that his grandad wasn't as crazy as people believed. One thing leads to another, and he is invited to Transylvania to witness the process of a dead body's re-animation. Young Frankenstein is a silly movie in the best sense of the word - made with affection for the original and full of spoofs; it is by far one of the best horror comedies ever.

Manchester By The Sea

Manchester By The Sea

2016 | 2 hours 17 minutes | Directed by Kenneth Lonergan

Starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler

Manchester By The Sea is a psychological drama film where the protagonist of the story is a depressed and grief-stricken man who must take care of his teenage nephew after his brother's death. The topics here are quite grim - guilt, grief, PTSD, and dysfunctional families - but with the skillful directing by Kenneth Lonergan, you are somehow able to sit through this heartwrenching drama and take something elevating from it. And while Manchester By The Sea isn't an easy watch, it is a definite must-see film.

Watching The Terminator is like watching a comic book come to life - it's full of action amplified by a great story, terrific acting, and stellar directing. No wonder The Terminator is still holding its title as a legendary action movie even years after its release.

Tangerine

Tangerine

2015 | 1 hour 28 minutes | Directed by Sean Baker

Starring Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, Karren Karagulian

Tangerine is a comedy-drama film with a story following a transgender sex worker who discovers her boyfriend, a pimp, has been cheating on her. Although it is Christmastime and everyone is in a festive mood, the worker, Sin-Dee, wishes only to locate the two-timing boyfriend and mend her broken heart. Shot entirely on iPhone 5s smartphones, Tangerine has a tangible realism to it, a story that could, in essence, happen (or probably already did) to any one of us. And under its unconventional veneer, Tangerine is a brilliant old-fashioned comedy, one that suits any taste.
