Arguing with the anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, flat earthers, and climate change deniers is a heck of a job. If you've ever tried, you’ll know what I am talking about.

And even though you recognize the fallacy in their arguments, like saying that masks don’t help to stop the coronavirus, you sometimes need heavy artillery.

Luckily, some people who know what they’re talking about have done everyone a service and stepped in to school the science deniers big time. From biochemists to sport scientists, these are some of the most mic-drop moves in stopping the spread of misinformation.

These days, when there are so many science deniers, it may feel like arguing with them is absolutely pointless. But a 2019 study published in the journal Nature Human Behavior showed that it’s in fact worth arguing with them.

Philipp Schmid and Cornelia Betsch of the University of Erfurt in Germany conducted six experiments with 1,773 subjects. They assessed “how to mitigate the influence of a denier on the audience.”

The results showed that “not responding to science deniers has a negative effect on attitudes towards behaviors favored by science (for example, vaccination) and intentions to perform these behaviors.”

Facing deniers can be treated as a concerned and important effort to fight misinformation. The authors of the study suggest that “not turning up to the discussion at all seems to result in the worst effect.”

Meanwhile, showing up on an acquaintance's Facebook post, even if you think it's pointless, will surely do some good.

Interestingly, the authors claim that science deniers use the same rhetoric across domains. It means that “uncovering their rhetorical techniques is an effective and economic addition to the advocates’ toolbox.”

Every atheist I know loves Christmas. We love the celebration of family and friends, gift-giving, the food, and even some of the music (depending on the atheist in question, and if the lyrics aren't too spooky). I personally love that our modern "Christmas" is a combination of pagan tradition... and I get to watch evangelicals melt down over red cups.

So the person on the top is picking a fight where none is needed. However science and religion sometimes go hand in hand. Big leaps forward were made by priests and monks, including areas like genetics, astronomy and even evolution. So the second comment doesn't work either.

Religious people are not automatically "anti-science." One is not mutually exclusive of the other. That's just ignorant for people to say. There are a lot of dumb people who are neither and will argue any point because it makes them feel smart. The other point I would like to say is why can't people just be nice? We don't have to all agree on everything. Who cares what your neighbor thinks? Be a nice human being. Sheesh.

The discoveries and contributions of these religious scientists and doctors came from their intellect and education, not from being "religious". They accomplished results through hard work, not through prayer.

I'm an atheist but we celebrate Christmas. I mean, I don't believe there's a god. Not that there is a No-God. I am free. I'm even allowed to pray, I just don't think it might help. Christmas and Easter are important for me and my family, because it's a celebration of the circle of the year. That said, I think we don't have nearly enough non Christian holidays in Germany( only 2).

I can see the logic in specific holidays off. If you know over half of the company is going to recognize the holiday, you may as well just let everyone take off because there is a limit to how much work can be done with so little capacity.

Atheists don't have to participate in religious holidays. But my hope is that as a Christian they will know God directly. There is a story about a man in a flood who prays to be saved. Someone comes by with a boat to save him but he declines saying he prayed and is waiting for God. This happens 2 more times. The man dies. He gets to heaven and asks God why he didn't save him. God says, "I sent you 3 people with boats". People do pray, the answer is often a man in a boat... or science.

I partly agree. But then I wonder why we have so few non-religious holidays. I would prefer a model where you have to take vacation days for (most) religious holdays. And instead we get to celebrate official secular holidays. Like the women's right to vote, declaration of the human right, the ends of the world wars, the birthdays of your biggest national heroes and so on.

yeah but, just because you have a belief in a deity, doesn't mean you don't believe in medicine. It is completely possible to believe in both. However being atheist means you directly do not believe in a deity. It is not faith vs science, as some people from both sides seem to try to make it.

Our days of the week are named in honor of Norse gods. Sunday: For Sol, goddess of the sun, Sun's day Monday: for Mani, goddess of the moon, Mani's day Tuesday: For Tyr, god of war, Tyr's day Wednesday: For Odin, the Raven God, sometimes known as Woden, Woden's day Thursday: For Thor, god of strength and storms, Thor's day Friday: For Freya, goddess of marriage. Saturday: Saturday did not come from the Vikings. It came from the ancient Romans - Saturn's day.

Both atheists and religious people voted in governments and paid taxes to access medicare. Reilgious people still understand and use science, but focus life's existence on God. History gives us our calendar and festivities. Religion can choose which they want to participate in. Both statements above are based on false premise.

Well, now, here's the thing about that last argument: You can believe in God and pray for him to make you well ... AND believe that He gave people brains to think with, and thereby the ability to become medical doctors and creators of medical devices and medications and other healing items that can help people get well! Wow! BTW, kinda sick of people using the WORST examples of "Christians" to make these points. Most of us are fine with everybody having "our" holidays off. It's just the complete jerks who are the loudest. Sorry for that.

My dad worked for the state of Texas as a highway worker and got all kinds of holidays off. He got Ramadan and Yom Kippur off. So, according to this person's logic, since we aren't Muslim or Jewish he should have went to work on those days. Some people just say things that make no sense. There was a big celebration around the time of Christmas for at least 3000 years in England. It is the winter solstice! This is an important time in the year for people relying on and close to the land. The end of one growing year and the start of another. There was also a celebration around Easter which is still timed by the phases of the moon. This is the start of the planting season. Ch Christianity has just highjacked them for their own purposes. Celebrate away my friends.

The saving factor is that none of the public holidays are celebrated in their original religious mode anymore anyway, unless by private people privately. Christmas has been possible to celebrate in full secular mode for decades, to the discomfort of some as far back as at least the Charlie Brown special in 1965. Santa, trees, gifts, jingle bells, all that. Church and Jesus got optional a long time ago. Even Easter. They are even more secular now, when some folks seem to think even Santa and Rudolf are too old-school. If all these holidays were REALLY religious and celebrated as such publicly, by a society in which the religion was actually a public thing and on the minds of the celebrants, then it would be weird. As an atheist, I might actually ask for an alternate free day off just to avoid commemorating it by accident.

That isn't quite an equivalent set, though, and although a witty retort it isn't a scientific argument like some others here. First, medicine is serious and denying it to people would be serious. Plenty of religious people have participated in the invention and current practice of modern medicine and find no contradiction. And even if they do, depending on their denomination and religion, they manage to take part anyway. Not to mention basic care that has been provided by religious institutions for centuries. Second, public holidays, though fun, are not serious. Denying any specific ones to people would be annoying, but a comparatively trifling imposition. Doesn't mean it would be right, but it's not that big a deal by comparison.

Don't down vote me on this - but because you are religious does not mean you don't believe in medical care, but being an atheist means you do not believe in anything higher than yourself so it is not a one to one roast. That's not an accurate description of atheists. You make it sound like we're all arrogant in our superiority. Not the case at all, at least for me and those I know. There may well be a superior being that created the universe, but I simply don't believe it. It's not arrogance, it's an absence of blind faith and belief without evidence. And that's not even considering religious hypocrisy, which undermines the concept of belief.

Only religious extremists, and extremism is always bad in any field be it science or religion. Just to illustrate an extremist scientist unburdened by moral or religion might argue that performing some experiment on some group of people without their consent is perfectly justified because it could lead to some new amazing discovery. But that doesn't mean that is the right thing to do, and that is the lesson that religion is trying to teach humanity.

The theory that vaccines cause autism has been completely debunked years ago. Did the anti-vaxxers not get the memo? It doesn't matter. They'll still believe rumour and hearsay over science.

Someone should probably tell them that Darwin believed in God and evolution simultaneously throughout most of his research years.

More and more European countries make vaccinating mandatory. Unvaccinated children are banned from schools in those countries and parents can be forced to have their children vaccinated. And rightly so. Screw your "strong convictions" and "religious beliefs", our national health is endangered because of your b******t and we are getting tired of your stupidity.

It's so sad to see one thinks that if their kids are momentarily healthy without vaccination, that's proof that this state will keep up indefinitely. It most likely won't. It would be funny to see their faces when they realize their mistakes, but it won't, because it would be to the expense of the child who'd deserve better.

I instantly tune out anyone who refers to grown women as 'girls' anyway, especially when they're talking about an educated woman in a high level position. I'm fairly certain this same man wouldn't refer to a male meteorologist as a 'weather boy.'

Tell that to the families of women who died from cervical cancer. Including a 15 year old girl in the UK a few years ago. Plus it’s been proven that men can be affected by HPV as well so some are campaigning for teenage boys to have the vaccine too. Oh and it might not cause cancer, but more often genital warts and other infections. Who would want to be protected from getting genital warts right?! Morons...

The issue, my friend, is why do flat-earthers believe hokum without question?
