I see a lot people laughing about, that this is their life, it's a vacation, etc. Look at what is given: a bed, a toilet, food, and water. THAT"S IT. No books. No computer. No CONTACT with humanity WHATSOEVER. I know ALOT of people don't like interacting with a live human. I get it. But even when we're "alone" we're still "doing things" that more often or not required (at some point) another human. Even an artist who creates most probably also 'consumes' other art. I think the challenge is do-able, but I think it would a LOT harder than it sounds.

It’s just one month. Seriously. Most people here are acting as if you are exiled for life. For $5 million? Easy. You can think about all sort of things. Think of the books you read. Count the bricks in the wall. Give yourself mental challenges. When you get bored you think: huh, I’ll be set for life after this.

No matter how "Introverted" you are, no human contact for a month would drive you insane. Your mind would literally not be able to handle it and you would go crazy. Why do you think that prisons have isolation chambers?

Not true. People are in solitary confinement for months and years on end and do ok. The longest was 43 years. Prisoners of war often endured far worse in far worse conditions and survived ok. I keep thinking that those that say they can’t do it are seriously deficient in imagination. There are lots of things you can do to keep you occupied: carve into the walls. Take the bed apart. Tear the sheets apart and knit them back. Draw with your food. Figure out how the toilet flush mechanism works. It’s. Not. That. Hard.

I am an introvert and frequently spend long periods of time alone, but I don't know how possible this really is. Vsauce as well as many others have done experiments like this and it was so boring and there was no brain stimulation and they nearly went crazy. Vsauce described himself as an extrovert so he may not have lasted as long as some others, but he was only in there a few days and he got completely disoriented and didn't know what time it was. A month is a long time.

Yeah, because no human interaction is one thing, but nothing to do is something else entirely. I can stay on my own for a week fine if I have some books to read and some cleaning to do. But try just laying in bed for more than a few hours straight in the silence and you'll see how hard it is.

I'm pretty much self-sufficient. I'd sleep through most of it and the rest of the time would be spent with daydreaming. I've been thinking about this a lot, reading about the experience of people in solitary confinement. Iknow i's a method of torture, but I still don't get how it is this disturbing for people.

There is a short story regarding this experiment, I read it in class this year, I don't remember the name but I highly recommend it, but instead of a month, he's in there for I think... 5 years? I don't exactly remember, but it was an interesting story.

Vsauce did that experiment for a week, go watch it on youtube, he nearly lost his mind. What none of you realize is that on that short list there is nothing to entertain you, no internet, no books, no games, no crafting materials, not even a pile of sand to build a small sand castle or to at least count the grains. In short nobody could do that challenge and live.

This "social experiment" is routinely conducated by totalitarian states on political prisoners. It does not typically end well for them, even without any physical torture.

I agree, but it can be different if you do it voluntarily and you have lights, heating, proper food, proper bed, running water, etc. Not being threatened by insecurity, abuse and the possibility of being taken to somewhere anytime also makes a difference. Knowing your future and knowing your family is all right, also differs from what a political prisoner faced with. There is also a question regarding your right to interrupt the experiment if needed. My grandpa spent 1,5 years in a Soviet jail as a political prisoner and suffered a trauma he never even wanted to talk about.
