People have the best knowledge of what they have experienced and to be more aware of what is going on outside their life’s bubble, they have to interact with people who are different from them and to actively search for that information.

Otherwise, they might make themselves oblivious and out of touch with reality, which could make them look stupid in front of others. Ignorance is not bad in itself as it is impossible to know everything, but sometimes it is hard to believe how certain knowledge has not reached a person.

Not realizing that there are people who can’t afford a house or having gaps in general education are some things Redditors considered to be common knowledge that doesn’t belong just to a single society group, but they were wrong and told some funny and frustrating stories answering the question “What did somebody say that made you think: ‘This person is out of touch with reality?’”

40 Things People Said That Indicated They Don’t Realize How The World Really Works, As Shared In This Online Community I’m a nanny and I’ve worked for some rich clients. Old money. These people know nothing about reality.

The best one I heard was this family I was working 12 hour days for. Good pay, terrible schedule. At one point I was bouncing their baby on my knee and the Mom goes “Being a mom isn’t that hard. I don’t know why other women complain about it so much”.

While her nanny is literally caring for the baby.

40 Things People Said That Indicated They Don’t Realize How The World Really Works, As Shared In This Online Community Pretty much any time I see someone yelling at a Starbucks or other service employee. They come into a crowded shop, wave their big $5 bill around like a high roller, then yell at a 16 year old for making their coffee incorrectly. Lame. If you find yourself to be one of the people yelling at service workers, fix your own problems before telling other people what to do.

Why should they? That kind of attitude has always worked, so why change now? When I became a manager in retail at a theme park, I was finally able to get revenge on those assholes. And I will take up for any service worker getting abused.

My sister taught 6th grade English. More than one parent was required to sit in on their kid's classes. The kids still acted up because their parents refused to hold them accountable. The most common comment from the parents, and I use that word lightly, "We can't control him/her." When it came to the report cards, and the kids failed, they would storm in yelling that it just had to be the teacher's fault. Sure it is. No homework was turned in, every test failed. Yep, it's definitely the teacher's fault.

This bothers me sooooooo much. Opinions are not facts. Facts are not opinions. You are entitled to the opinion that Nickelback is a good band. You are even entitled to the opinion that certain Presidents/Prime Ministers are good/bad at their jobs because you can narrow your opinion down to very slim frames of reference (BoJo *was* the right guy to get Brexit done (unfortunately)). But you do NOT get to opine on whether the Earth is flat or whether vaccines work effectively.

American "Chinese" food is good.. some places are better than others. But nothing compares to real Chinese food. My brothers fiancé is from China and her family always has big dinner parties and OMFG... I never knew that American Chinese food wasn't actual Chinese food until I ate at their house. I'm just angry that there aren't any authentic places in the US because it's so much better than what is being sold here. I don't really remember some of the dishes they made. I just remember her mother lecturing us about how Americans ruined Asian cuisines and how she's on a mission to correct this atrocity! Oh and her red bean cakes and moon cakes were amazing! I had never had Chinese desserts before. I think she made some kind of mango pudding too one time that ruined all pudding for me. Nothing compares now.

I have a lot of books that I've collected throughout my adult life. They are precious to me. I had a friend named Sam who was an avid reader. He came from a wealthy family. He visited me and my husband at our apartment. We had a small "library" where we kept books. He was mesmerized. He picked up one of the books and was walking around with it. I watched him and it was clear he planned on taking it with him. When he was leaving, I said, "Can you give me back the book you took, please?" He played it off like he didn't realize it. I replied, "So you normally go into people's houses, pick up a book, and walk out with it? GTFO of my apartment."

My mom was poor, but we never went to the library. We did love to read though. The library in our town was too far to drive to easily. We had a lot of books, all bought from thrift stores, garage sales, and used book stores. We'd trade in whole bags of books at the used book store and use the credit to buy different ones. A public library is full of so much more than books! So much adventure to be found and so much fun to be had. EVERYONE should have a library card and take advantage of all of the tools they offer!!! I buy books all the time, but I also donate a ton and take a ton out from the library - I usually just keep books from my favorite authors or books in a series so that I can re-read them or share them with friends.

I admit, I am one of those people who buys books rather than going to the library. It's how I was raised, long before Amazon. Small bookstores need the revenue, and sales $$ affect how much an author will get for their next book. Now I buy my books from Bookshop.org, where sale proceeds go to independent bookstores.

My comment was down voted, let me explain: In libraries children are allowed to roam the shelves and look at everyting that is interesting. There are trained librarians who talk to the children and guide them in finding things the child will enjoy. In school libraries the children come without their parents, so the parents can't "censor" what the child borrows. In public libraries the parents will follow their children, but librarians guide the parents just as much as th echildren in the coice of good literature. In bookshops there is a more limited selection of books, often only the newest and most popular. To be honest, most employees in book shops are more interesting in selling than in guiding people through literature. My original comment: In other words: Until she was a teenager or so her parents decided what she was allowed to read. Of course she could grab a book that looked interesting in the book store, but mum/dad/the one with the money decided if she was allowed to have it.

If children are allowed to read about things that interest them they develop a love of reading. That's what a good librarian does for children. (Teachers & parents too) People that love to read are lifelong learners.

That's just so... sad. I can't even imagine- I practically grew up in the public library. I was asked to read to the other kids during storytime when I was, like, 5 or 6. My sister, nine years older than me, introduced me to YA and adult fiction starting when I was 8. That was when I discovered J. R. R. Tolkien, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, Jane Austen, Dickens, and so many more. Plus, I was lucky enough to have a mom who read to me when I was a baby and tons of books at home, a library which has grown and shrunk over the years (a lot of shrinking, unfortunately, thanks to the constant moving our family did), but which now spills out of six 6' tall IKEA bookcases. Even with all that, I can't imagine a life without a public library.

The library was my single Mother's salvation on Saturday afternoons & helped foster my lifelong love of reading. We're in the process of moving & I was able to whittle my book collection down to less than 1,000. My movers will still not be pleased by the 38 boxes I have left.

Born and raised in a village of 370 people. We have never had a public library. I can assure you that growing up in rural communities, unless school was in session, you had to buy your books. These days we drive 45 minutes to the nearest public library so our family has access to a decent selection of books. We also pay for our library membership.

Just wanted to add, that the majority of our books were purchased from garage sales, thrift stores, and the occasional book fair we had at school. Kids in town traded books back and forth as well as our parents. And we learned to take care of and appreciate the books we had. They are still in very good condition and our daughter has enjoyed reading them herself! 😍

Yes owning your favorites can be nice, but there's magic in bringing it back in hopes someone else gwts to share the experience as intimately as you did, then can always look for it again, I miss video stores too! 😥

I have over 2000 books in my library, my kids have over 2500 in theirs. You see, I still use libraries, and I am poor, but you can buy books from thrift stores, discounted prices, and even for free from searches online. You don't need a lot of money to buy books, just time and effort. I also request books as gifts. I have to say, sometimes, this is a level of joy I feel blessed to have. My kids like the library but we love our books. With 5 kids, we have books for all ages and yes, they get worn and I have to throw them out... But I have to say, nothing beats happy smiles on kids faces

We did both! I was such a voracious reader as a kid, I was perfectly capable of going through at least one book a day. Not only would that have been expensive, we couldn't have stored them all, LOL. It just made more sense to load up at the library! I still am a voracious reader, and as a teacher of little kids, I also love to share great books with my classes. I now have quite the personal collection of books and a cupboard in my class stuffed as well. I am also proud to say I make use of almost every library system in my general area (we have county and city systems where I live.)

I've gotten over 450 books from the recycling bins behind the library. At least half were books for children of all ages.I was appalled to find them there in the first place, especially since they were in great shape (no marks, torn pages or covers) so I checked back every week & continued finding more. I thought, how awesome, I can donate some & use the others in my Little Free Library! Unfortunately, on one of my trips someone working late called the police who threatened to take me to jail. For what? I'll never know but the Library worker had me put on trespass notice for taking things that would other wise be destroyed.WTF??? MADE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE AT ALL. Even the officers were surprised at what I was pulling out of the bins.

You know that's really not as bad as some of the other things I've read in this article but it is a little condescending it's looked at the wrong way or maybe it is the right way I don't know what it had to have been there for this stitch. I didn't rent a lot of books at the library I did actually buy several of them because I just didn't want to bother taking them back all the time I had a lot of other things to do.

I won't lie... I've 100% been that person. I loved to read and my parents came from families that never could afford books so when they had me making sure i had books was the#1 priority. So once every couple of weeks they would take me to chapters and let me explore until i found something i wanted to read. University was my first time stepping into a public library. It wasn't elitist it was just overcompensating.

Well, depending on what country you are in it is really hard to read in libraries. Here in Brazil we don't have many libraries and usually most books are falling apart, there's no place to read them or study properly. Over here, even though books are expensive, it is better to buy them than to go in libraries. We have specific book shops for used books called "sebos" that sell used or old books. Some cities even have places where you can exchange books in a sort of farmers market.

I'm rolling on the floor, laughing. My mother was dyslexic and instead of exposing herself to embarrassment, she simply forbade me to go to the public librairy (''Germs, dear''). one day our neighbor asked if my sister and i already had our librairy cards. I was 10 by the. Mom replied, ''I prefer to buy these books for my children. It's a quality issue''. The neighbor, who knew full well that my family couldn't afford this on a factory worker's salary, laughed out loud. Next day, Sis and I had our cards. Couldn't have been happier. Ah! What a bit of good cheer can do in an instant!

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned dumpster-diving. You wouldn't believe how many books - of all genres - in Perfect condition get tossed in the trash for lord knows why. I would never peruse whatever's out back during business hours - I do believe in monetarily supporting local bookstores - but once it's after hours as far I'm concerned it's fair game.

In other words: Until she was a teenager or so her parents decided what she was allowed to read. Of course she could grab a book that looked interesting in the book store, but mum/dad/the one with the money decided if she was allowed to have it.

Actually I can relate, my parents are very overprotective and so I never learned anything that could have been “controversial or upsetting” until middle school… I never realized until recently that I didn’t have to be uncomfortable with being a girl and live my whole life hating my biologically given identity, I could be who I really was.

40 Things People Said That Indicated They Don’t Realize How The World Really Works, As Shared In This Online Community I was 16 years old, in Driver's Ed, and the teacher asks us an extra credit question. "Why are there interstates in Hawaii? You can't drive there from any other state."

A girl in my class raised her hand and asked, "Was it because they were built before Hawaii broke off?"....This girl thought it was a possibility that Hawaii broke off, and drifted to the middle of the Pacific ocean, all in the last 50 years.

Also, Hawaii has interstates because, if a highway is funded by the federal government, it's simply called an interstate.

40 Things People Said That Indicated They Don’t Realize How The World Really Works, As Shared In This Online Community My old boss was railing on me for placing an order late and getting charged more after missing the ‘early bird special’, when I had been reminding her consistently for at least two months (gradually increasing my urgency that she needed to make up her mind). She was yelling at me and then said, “$$$ might not seem like a lot to you but it is to me!”

This coming from the person who set my wage, signed my checks, owned 4 substantial homes, had MILLIONS of dollars worth of artwork, designer everything, etc… While I was living in a 250sq foot garden studio apartment with my partner, which flooded when it rained longer than two days, making her hundreds of thousands of dollars from sales, with no commission.

40 Things People Said That Indicated They Don’t Realize How The World Really Works, As Shared In This Online Community I was involved in a nonprofit for women in my last city maybe 2 years back. My ex (we were 27 at the time) was from a rich area of the state, and the mean income for this area was $31k. A teacher talked about how 500+ kids in her school were homeless, abs how seniors would pool their money together to get a hotel for days or weeks at a time.

I remember telling my ex about it, and how awful that’s gotta be to be 17 and living with 10 others in a hotel. He said “they’re stupid. If they had any brains, they’d buy a house so they could get equity; the hotel is just them throwing their money away and not getting anything from it.” He was 100% stuck that these 17 year olds, with no addresses, who are MINORS, can apply and qualify for a mortgage. I fussed at him and don’t regret it, because he is so out of touch with reality. Eventually he went on months later to say he talks down about other people and acts like he’s better than everyone because he is better than everyone.

Edit to add: to clarify, he suggested the high schoolers should all buy a house, not my organization. Household income was about 10k higher than individual. His parents were loaded, so he never had to really pay for anything until after college, and even then he didn’t have to pay for housing for the first 3 years of his career, and even still, 95% of his (nice) furniture and everything was given to him. It’s very easy to brag about your 401k when you NEVER had to allocate money towards rent, loans, etc.
