Travel is truly one of the best things that a person can do – it broadens the mind, fosters empathy with people of all races and cultures and creates memories that last a lifetime. However, travel is a luxury and a privilege that only a fraction of the world's population can afford.

So when Western people, with all the privileges we hold, are found 'begpacking' on the streets of developing countries, it can leave a sour taste. Tourism is a vital source of income in many countries; we should travel in such a way that maximizes the benefits for local people and businesses. Sponging off the kindness of strangers to further our own selfish travel goals is just not on! If you can't afford to travel, stay at home until you earn enough money to do it ethically.

Authorities in some countries have had enough, and now immigration officers on the Indonesian island of Bali have started sending these 'begpackers' to their embassies to get themselves sorted out. "We have seen many cases of problematic tourists, lately they are either Australian, British or Russian," one official said. "We tend to report these cases to the relevant embassies so that they can oversee their citizens who are on holiday."

While we don't know the context behind these pictures - some of these people might genuinely have been a victim of some misfortune - others are clearly just looking for a free ride around the world.

What do you think about this phenomenon? Have you traveled on a tight budget before? Have you ever found yourself needing help in a foreign country? Do you see a problem with this kind of 'begpacking?' Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

For the vast majority of the planet the cost and practicalities of travel make it simply an unattainable dream; visa regulations are stacked heavily in favor of Western passport holders and affordable flights just don't exist in many parts of the world.

A European can, for example, pop over to Senegal for 90 visa free days whenever they feel like it. However, if a Senegalese person wanted to do same, going back the other way to Europe... harsh rules and restrictions apply for them. This is the reality for most of the developing world, so be thankful for the greater freedoms your passport gives you. There is nothing wrong with sharing a skill, like teaching a language for example, or selling some hand-made products. Travelling on a shoestring is a source of pride for many people, who enjoy the challenge of survival in challenging places. That's also fine, as long as you don't become a burden and have to rely on others, who themselves may have little to give.

“Whilst it is not OK to beg whilst travelling there really is nothing wrong (or new) with busking or selling hand-made jewellery on the side of the road,” Will Hatton, founder of the Broke Backpacker blog, told the Independent.

“This isn’t a conventional career choice but it is how some people opt to travel the world and if you are sharing a skill or selling a product I really don’t see the harm. I think a lot of people are threatened by backpackers living so hand to mouth as it’s a lifestyle which many people just can’t get to grips with – ultimately though, for many, it’s far more fun to travel the world on $10 a day than to be chained to a desk.”

"The news about foreign tourists turning to begging and busking on the streets of Kuala Lumpur cannot be good news. They claim they need money to continue their world travel." Malaysian businessman and traveller TV Smith said in an Instagram post.

"It cannot be a good thing as it might affect all of us travelers, especially travelers on a budget."

"I am very angry reading this as I do not travel without sufficient funds or contingency. Most of us don't. We stick to a plan and go home when money run low."

"How will it impact you? Soon, many countries may start imposing conditions to enter such as minimum amount of money in travelers cheques or you must carry a credit card with a healthy credit limit. Or provide proof of hotel reservations and return tickets. I have seen it imposed at entry points in the UK in the 1980s. I don't know if travellers cheques still exist and it was a hassle buying them before a trip. It will affect genuine travelers everywhere."

"I think it is best we do not give money to these panhandlers as it will only encourage more shoestring backpackers to do the same. Some of the beggars boast on their Facebook, showing off their lavish lifestyle funded by begging from locals. Many just pretend to be poor and may have a platinum card in a pouch somewhere."

Pretty much sums it up! Let's hope this horrible new 'phenomenon' is quickly dealt with. Travel responsibly, everyone!

Your open contempt, in the way you express it, is as insensitive as their mode of travel is. Two adults who expose themselves - and their child! - to this are obviously misguided and probably deeply troubled individuals. If wrath has a place here, it ought to be directed to the rise of social media which has made heroes out of a lot of people who did the same thing before them, and it should also be directed towards some (American) evangelical churches that send their faithful out as missionaries having convinced them that God will feed them, clothe them, and generally take care of them; in effect, they are trying to prove that miracles happen. I am pretty sure that you could call at least two of the three 'victims' instead of the epithet you chose.

When Boredpanda used to post an article with the tittle like "This baby travels around the world bla bla bla, let see the photos bla bla bla" - I never imagine there's the unfortunate one like this. It's sad to look. They should go home, get a job, and rise their child properly (instead of using her photo to take pity from locals)

Travel has always been a luxury item it’s your responsibility to have enough funds to get home. It’s insulting to be taking money from people who can’t really afford to give or they should be supporting the genuine homeless in there own country. Stop being lazy and thinking it’s your right to travel the world and have others fund it for you. Travel by all means but be responsible and respectful to others.

I actually saw this with a woman and her kids. They were begging outside a Walmart. She had a sign that said she was a single mom with no money for rent or food. I was first led to not believe the sign because she had no bag nearby, nice clothes on and well fed kids. I watched her for a few when suddenly a white Mercedes pulls up, she folds her sign up, jumps in with the kids..give the guy driving a kiss and speeds off. I got the license plate, called the cops and turned them in. When she showed up a week later, I pulled up and told her to call her boyfriend to come get her or I was going to post a video of him picking her up last week. When she tried to pull off that she spoke no English..I held up my phone and said "policia." She quickly called her boyfriend and they never came back.

They do this in South Africa as well. Mother with child (or a teenage boy that I saw) playing on the side of a busy road (how neither of them are not knocked by passing cars baffles me), then at the end of the day when it's quiet they are collected by someone in a nice car. Yes, some are homeless cases but it's so hard to tell who genuinely needs help, so it's better to give them food or clothing (no money that can go to those collecting them, or on drugs), or support a charity who assists the homeless. Cases like this make helping so difficult, and make one jaded.

Another argument of the authors of the article is that the locals are “tired” of foreigners. Probably there are regions crowded with foreigners, but the most of them are "civilized" tourists, not just packers. Usually, people who come with money feel that they are the "master"s and think that if they pay for the “service” they can demand also being “served” by locals. They expect that locals will clean up the garbage after them, will provide the best meals, be nice to them and so on, because they paid for everything.

As a result, in Laos or in southern Peru tourists are generally not considered as "people", but only as wallets with money. At the same time the locals get tired of tourists, because although they bring money they also flood the area and disturb the environment. At the same time, tourists traveling without money demand much less than those who travel with money, and those who travel with money usually create much more problems than those who travel "for free". Huge crowds of tourists make noise, behave inappropriately, throw down the litter, are very loud and disrespectful, because they are paid for everything, and they feel like “white masters” whom all have to serve just because they "pay for the party".

I’m so sick of people sponging off others when they’re perfectly capable of working & living independently all on their own. In this case, here are 2 parents who are using their child for sympathy. Furthermore, they’re teaching their child to become dependent on others for everything rather than teaching her to be responsible for herself. This is the essence of child abuse. Parents have an obligation to raise their children to become individuals who are independent, respectful, thoughtful, curious, & properly educated among other things. I just don't understand this philosophy of “being owed everything but not having to work for it” that popped up with the advent of the millennial generation. But, it’s not just the poor moral character of these parasites. The morons who actually give losers like these folks money are the real problem. If no one gave money to people who clearly don’t need it, these parasites would cease to exist.

But that is not all. The authors obviously assume that travelers are people from the "rich" countries of Western Europe, and their desire to collect money for tickets is just a meaningless wish of rich eccentrics. The authors do not account that many of the travelers may be from Eastern Europe, from the Baltic States, Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, Albania, where the GDP per capita is not only several times less than in "Western Europe", but often even less than GDP per capita in Thailand, Malaysia ( and we don't even mention Hong Kong). Actually in many poor European countries the GDP per capita is same or less than in selected African countries. And it can well be that for the residents of these countries hitchhiking and raising funds for tickets is the only possibility to see the world, the possibility in which the authors of the article refuse to accept.

lizzy-necroz avatar
Anonymous BegPacker

Also, the authors forget that even in “rich” countries there are a lot of poor people. For example, in Germany officially more than 10% of the population are recognized as poor, in the USA more than 12% are poor. Many people, even in "prosperous" countries, do not have enough money for distant "civilized" journeys. Consequently, if the authors of the article consider it unacceptable for Europeans to collect money for tickets during the journey, they thereby deny millions of people the right to travel and the right to see the world, only on the basis of their insufficiently high income and social status.

People who travel with small money of on free basis usually treat the surrounding people, the nature and the local culture much more respectfully, at least, because nobody will help them if they behave badly, and also because their goal is usually not "rest" or "fun", but the travel is their lifestyle that implies that during the journey they will try to learn the culture of visited countries, to get closer with locals, to communicate with them. And the fact that they bag-packers create a bad image is not true, because almost 100% of all negative news about the inappropriate behavior of tourists is connected just with tourists for money who drink on vacation, do not respect local customs and generally do what they want.

lizzy-necroz avatar
Anonymous BegPacker

4 years ago DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Because of such people the a negative opinion is formed about visitors from other countries, and tourists are treated as persons who do not care for everything and who came just to waste money. Travelers start to be perceived as "walking wallets" with money, and not as people.

lizzy-necroz avatar

Therefore, one should not mix free travelers and tourists and hinder the ability of the first to see and feel the countries to which they are going, to see everything as it really is and which is not possible to see if you just come to spend money. Tourists are traveling for other purposes, and there is a research that local people in many countries are already very tired of the tourist regions and of these crowds of people, noise and debris that remain after tourists. Having all this in mind, criticizing of those who travel with a minimum budget is nonsense. Nobody is forced to to give food, money, or the ability to spend a night to a traveler. Only those who are able to help will help, and only those who want to communicate with the traveler will communicate with them.

lizzy-necroz avatar

But there is one more point in the discussion of “unethical” behavior. Saying that it is "unethical" to ask for donations while traveling in "poor" countries the authors actually reproduce the colonial-age division of the countries into the “first”, “second” and “third” worlds. However, such a division is outdated, both morally and in fact, and moreover, it can be perceived offensively by the locals those countries are called the "third" world without a good reason. Indeed, among the cities in which travelers are usually photographed there is for example, Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. The average salary in Kuala Lumpur is almost 1,800 euros, which is quite comparable with European salaries. Malaysia has a fast-growing economy and industry, including the microelectronics and information technology production. The same applies to the pictures form many other countries from this and similar articles. For example, many travelers are portraited in India, China, Thailand.

lizzy-necroz avatar

I think none of readers would call China a "third world country" any more, provided that nowadays it is a second, if not first economy in the world. But even if we take India, where the problem of poverty is acute, one should not forget that this is a rapidly developing country with advanced technologies, such as nuclear weapons and space technologies. Just the fact: Indian spaceship "Mangalyan" is working since 2014 on the orbit of Mars. In the developed regions of India, such as Mumbai, wages and living standards correspond to, if not exceed, living standards in a country like Portugal. Should we still following the authors of article, call India and similar countries "poor" and "underdeveloped"?

lizzy-necroz avatar
Anonymous BegPacker

Should we also be so disrespectful to the achievements of people living in these regions, considering that their development and economic wealth does not allow them to help travelers? Maybe we can instead let the local people on the streets decide by themselves if they want to support someones trip or not, and not count money in their pockets? How long would we ignore the progress of Asian countries and call them "underdeveloped", not seeing our own poverty? Unfortunately, we have to admit that too many Europeans still live in the imperialistic realities of the 19th century and are not able to understand and accept their new place in the multi-ethnic and rapidly developing world, but nevertheless consider that they have a right to criticize travelers who just want to learn and accept other cultures and a little bit better understand the real situation in the world.

Frankly speaking, it is rather strange to read the opinion that the behavior of the packers collecting their money for the ticket is "unethical." This is strange, at least for several reasons. First, the cultural stereotype is clearly present here, that a white person is a rich European who cannot ask for money from "poor and oppressed" local residents. That means that authors just basing on the appearance and the color of skin judge the travelers and determine which behavior is “socially acceptable” for them and which is not. Just basing on appearance the travelers are recognized as "privileged Europeans" who certainly do not deserve any empathy or understanding. In most cases nobody knows, and is not interested in the real living situation and background of these people. If appearance and the skin-color are the reason to deny a person some kinds of activity then which other word can one find for this, except "racism"?

Yesterday I Saw These Blindfolded Travellers Asking For Money In One Of The Most Transited Areas Of The Shopping District Of Kuala Lumpur

Yesterday I Saw These Blindfolded Travellers Asking For Money In One Of The Most Transited Areas Of The Shopping District Of Kuala Lumpur

Travelling is a choice, and not only a choice but a luxurious one. When you choose to travel, to leave your comfort zone and explore the world you might feel yourself as an adventurer, and you might be one, you are one among your group of privileged people. If you can actively decide to leave everything behind, take a backpack and wonder the world, it is because you have a social structure that allows you to do it. You do it because most likely your family does not need your work force to be sustained, you do it because even after months or years of travel, you can go back to a safe place were your "Struggles" as a backpacker will only be a nice memory of the times when you decided to get out of your comfort zone and "Live". I have no troubles with the people that decide to travel and perform an art, entertain people, and from that keep travelling, or finding a part time job in different places to keep going, as long as it is legal. When I was living in oxford I had a licence to perform in the streets and I was registered as a legal busker as a side activity. I have also performed in bars and hostels in exchange of a beer or an extra free night. I have done hardcore backpacking myself, and if it wasn't for the dozens of people that have let me stayed with them or that have helped me in other ways, I wouldn't have been able to live as many experiences. But I have never pretended that people should give me free money to keep travelling, to keep doing what the majority of the people in this planet will never be able to do, not because they don't want to but because they can't. I have always had enough to sustain myself, I plan and save for years for my travels

Don't believe people like these! If they were truly robbed, they would contact their country's embassy and get help that way!
