Old, Unwanted Dog Was About To Be ‘Gassed’ In Shelter, But When Someone Offered To Save It, Owner Demanded $450

The most common reason that dogs are left at shelters is that the family no longer wants them anymore for some reason, with approximately 3.3 million dogs entering U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. While there are good samaritans looking out for these pups and selflessly willing to take them in, one Reddit user found out the hard way that the people giving away these animals in need don’t always have the best intentions.

In a candid post on the subreddit r/ChoosingBeggars, she shared text messages between her and a “desperate” dog owner searching for a home for her dog so that it didn’t end up in a shelter. However, things took a manipulative twist in the end and this user found out this particular choosy beggar was after more than just someone to rescue her canine.

Image credits: Robyn Jay (not the actual photo)

The screenshots begin with the user responding back to a message from the dog owner offering to take in the pup so that she is not sent to a shelter. According to the post the woman she calls an “acquaintance” had left a tearful message, begging her to take in the animal who the poster found out was both “sickly” and untrained.

“Acquaintance left message tearfully *begging* me to take in her sickly untrained dog that she’s about to drop off at the shelter. When I reluctantly agree to help take the dog in, she then demands $450 from me”

The dog, Luna, is a 7-year-old pitbull mutt and was being let go because her owner was moving and couldn’t bring her along. Not only did the woman want the OP to pick up the dog (she didn’t have a car) but there was some more fine print to this agreement.

Luna’s owner demanded that the good Samaritan offering to take her in pay an “adoption fee” of $350 and added a “courtesy offer” of giving her the crate, toys, and doghouse for an extra $100 – adding up to $450. Understandably, the OP was outraged as she had not been looking to buy a new dog and had only reluctantly agreed to take Luna to prevent her from ending up in a shelter.

Unsatisfied with the free offer, the woman tried to guilt her into paying the $450 sum by saying Luna was sure to be “gassed” since she was older and has health problems, adding that the OP’s other dogs probably cost way more. To which the OP responded, once again, with her initial offer of taking in the dog for free.

To add to the inconveniences the OP discovered that she didn’t even live in the same state as her and would have to drive from New Jersey to Pennsylvania. Luckily she had a cousin in the area who loves pit bulls and has experience with rescuing and working with them.

In an update, the OP wrote that eventually, the difficult woman accepted their offer, ” My cousin & I each put in $50 and told CB the absolute most we would pay her is the $100 she’s asking for the supplies. She eventually accepted our offer. Obviously, I didn’t want to give this awful human $100 for her bullshit but if that’s the price for going to sleep tonight knowing the dog is safe & away from her, I’m ok with it.”

Luna was rescued, but unfortunately, the OP was not rid of the dog’s previous owner

After the new owner picked up Luna they found out signs of animal abuse and neglect: “The crate she wanted to charge us for was filthy and rusty, as if the dog had been locked in it for long periods of time and was just peeing all over. She must have been a really shitty owner because it looks like the dog hasn’t been bathed in ages and also has nails so long they’re curling under her feet.” The OP’s cousin brought her to the vet to get a full workup and treatment, but when they asked her previous owner for her past medical records things went south.

The fed-up OP wrote after the encounter: “We will be reporting CB for animal neglect and abuse. Cousin already took photos of the disgusting crate, her nails, her wounds, etc. I hope CB is punished or at least has her home searched in case she has any other animals,” but added that all in all, “It’s a happy ending. Luna gets medical care and an owner that loves her. Cousin got a new best friend. I can sleep better tonight knowing the pup’s away from this awful human. ”

People were disgusted by the dog’s previous owner for her behavior and treatment of Luna

I don't understand anyone who wants a pet and isn't willing to make their short lives the happiest and healthiest possible. A dog/cat/parrot etc should be treated like a member of the family because that is what they are. I hope to god this monster doesn't get another pet.

It mentioned rehab somewhere in one of the texts in the article. I think the woman may have had a drug problem. That would explain wanting that amount of cash and the neglect.

It's so sad that so many shelters are overcrowded and have to kill some of their dogs just because they're old/sickly. Why do people keep buying from puppy mills? Who cares if it's that's perfect little purebred golden? They're are so many loving and caring pets at the shelter. Many of they were brought there because they were stray or their family couldn't take care of them anymore for whatever reason, yet some people think it's because they were too much work and aren't good pets. I myself had 3 cats from a shelter, one of which was a stray, and the other two were dumped at the doorstep or the shelter. They're the sweetest cats I could ever ask for!

I agree. If you want a wonderful pet, please adopt from your local shelter. I've adopted several dogs over the years. None were purebred, some were abandoned, some were taken from abusive homes, one was labeled "unadoptable" and scheduled to be put down after being returned to the shelter multiple times (not violent, just skittish due to abuse). They were all wonderful, but the "unadoptable" one was my favorite. My brother named him Shadow. We were patient with him and he was loving, loyal, intelligent and sociable. We took care of him for 15 years before he passed away. Make sure that you are ready for a long term commitment. You might WANT a pet right now, but that pet NEEDS you for the rest of their life.

Wow. I get that it's smart to ask an adoption fee if you're surrendering to a stranger, to make it less likely that they're a horrible person looking for an animal to abuse. But this situation is beyond messed up. I'm very glad to know that Luna is now safe and loved!

I have a rescue dog and I haven't got much money. Keeping a dog clean and well looked after doesn't cost a lot of money, just time and attention. It's true that vets are expensive, but I save every month to have money for an emergency. I can't go out for dinner to expensive places, or but a lot of clothes, but my dog is my priority. He eats good food, has his vaccines, and gets the stuff against fleas and ticks monthly. Money is not a very good indicator of how well you will look after your dog. It depends on the kind of person you are and what your priorities are. If your priority is yourself and you don't care about anybody else's well-being you shouldn't get a pet.

Many shelters ask a surrender fee these days to help cover the cost of all the vet treatment animals need when they take them in. No one pays you when you give them your abused or neglected pet. Stupid b***h.

Some of these comments amaze me. "It's only a dog!" What does that matter! It is one of Gods creatures and deserves to be treated better than that! There are laws that even say that too. People have been put in jail for abusing or killing an animal or pet! This idiot didn't give a hoot about the dog, just wanted money for drugs or booze or something. They should never be aloud to ever have another animal of any kind!

Poor baby looks so sad in the picture. Hope Luna smiles and plays and gets cuddled and loved all the time now. Her former owner needs to be locked up for seven years, in a crate where she's not bathed or let out and has to pee all over herself. Justice for Luna.

About 15 years ago, when we decided to move out of our rental house, we owned a big dog and 4 cats. My daughter was worried and asked: What if the next place doesn't allow pets? My answer: Then we'll look for another place that does allow pets. It never once occurred to me that we'd go anywhere without our pets. We're currently down to 1 cat (the others died of old age) and have 2 (new) dogs - the original one has also passed away. Pets are part of the family. Period.

Danielw, your comment is very sad and I wish there were something I could say to make you feel better. I don't know what your situation is, if you are sick, or depressed, but there must be some association or group where you can get some help. I agree with you, euthanasia should be legal. It's not in my country, unfortunately, because the "compassionate" and "kind" Catholic Church wants everybody to suffer as much as possible before dying. Whatever your problem is, try not to face it alone. There are always other people who are willing to help, like support groups for different illnesses. This world is full of bastards, but there are also many good people.

Sorry, but both people are jerks. The current owner for sure. But the one who wanted to help as well. If you dont "want" to have an other dog, especially one that f#cks your house, then don't pretend that you will interact. This dog will issues not because of illnesses or age (7yo is not a really old dog), but because of the random change and/or inappropriate new environment. I hope this and all the similar stories will end with a happy ending.

Thank you for taking care of this dog. You didnt have to and it cost you time and money, but the dog is grateful for it. That crazy ex-owner might think it works like that, but we understand it doesnt... and yet you still wanted to help. Thank you!

Douche! Asking for money is so jaw dropping, and trying to get cash is just gross! I love the reply" don't get another pet, don't reproduce "

It should be MANDATORY have to take a psychological test to see if you're even qualified to be a pet parent! Also they should check your finances and living situation as well.

Ugghh....I seriously surprised that person put up with that monster to make sure the dog was not put in a shelter. She has a HUGE heart to do what she did. God bless her.

I'm really impressed by how composed that person was. I'd go full hell on that shithead who tormented the dog for several years. I absolutely HATE animal abuse and fight it with full force but man, people like that do set off murderous intents.

I always need to go and cuddle my dog after reading stories like this. I love her more than anything and it myystifies me how somebody can maltreat their own dog that gives them so much loyalty. But then I know what some people do with their chidlren so.... Too many psychopaths in this world.

Dogs are for life. They are part of the family. I always call my dogs my daughters. I don’t have human kids and don’t want them. I’m happy to have doggie kids.

Poor baby looks so sad in the picture. Hope Luna smiles and plays and gets cuddled and loved all the time now. Her former owner needs to be locked up for seven years, in a crate where she's not bathed or let out and has to pee all over herself. Justice for Luna.

I really loved France's method of fees for abandoning animals. No one should leave their pets at shelters knowing they might end up being put down. Leaving animals or killing them should never be an option :(

Possibly far too often, people love a puppy or kitten when they are small and so cute, unfortunately they grow and some have lost interest, the pet is ignored or worse !!!

I would happily gas the ex-owner, that dog is beautiful and such a good girl and she deserves all the love, respect and comfort every dog does, a lot of people make me sick, my dogs are just as important as any family member and honestly, i love them more than most of my family. Disgraceful.
