40 Photos Of Dogs Before And After Their Adoption That Might Melt Your Heart Away, As Shared On This Online Group (New Pics)
According to ASPCA, an astonishing 6.3 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year in the US. Each year, approximately 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized (390,000 dogs and 530,000 cats). The numbers are so heartbreaking, it’s hard to wrap your head around the fact that many of the perfectly cute little animals don’t ever get their second chance in this life.
Luckily, however, more and more people are willing to give these lost furry souls their love and care, and bring them back to their forever family. So this post is a celebration of the rescued canines who, thanks to their loving owners, blossomed into these fun, cute, active, and smart woofers and pooches.
Thanks to Reddit’s wholesome corner known as r/BeforeNAfterAdoption, we prepared you an incredible collection of dog pics before and after they were adopted. The results are breathtaking and they give us hope that whatever happens, we are all going to be alright in this often chaotic world.
Psst! More inspiring woofer pics and stories can be found in our previous features here, here and here.

Named Her Possum Due To The Tail Situation, But Not Sure That Applies Anymore
It is amazing how expressive animal's eyes are. If you don't believe animals have souls, you just need to see pictures like this to know that's complete bunk.
Look at the change in her eyes, it's all different but those eyes go from dark to light, just wonderful.
Adopting a rescue dog is a rewarding experience for both pup and owner. It’s an opportunity to give a dog a second chance at happiness, but it can teach you a lot about love, forgiveness, and loyalty. But this rewarding experience doesn’t come without challenges of its own, and there are some things every prospective dog owner should consider before becoming a forever family.
Joe Nutkins, accredited dog trainer, shared a couple of useful tips on how to welcome a rescue dog into your home. First off, when adopting a pooch, you have to get ready to make them feel safe and comfortable in the new environment they are coming into but don’t know anything about yet.
Meet My Norkis
Food. What a difference food makes. No doubt the person loves Norkis, but the important factor was food. Love alone won't keep you from starving
Load More Replies...Wow. First one, and I'm pretty sure I can't take seeing more. A person who would treat a living thing the way this pup was treated should be imprisoned for life.
A Norkie is a a Yorkshire Terrier bred with a Norfolk Terrier. This dog however, is clearly NOT a Norkie. Their name is Norkis.
Load More Replies...Two things can be true at once, Marlowe . Someone had the love to ensure that food and medical care and a home was provided. This sweet baby had terrible mange - food alone wouldn't be enough. It takes money to care for a pet and so many people DO care but aren't financially capable...it's also probably part of how these poor babies end up on the street in these conditions. Just glad that love and food and medical care and resources all come together to save as many of these four-legged sweeties as possible! ❤ 🐶 🐕
I can’t imagine how horrific these living conditions must have been, it’s beyond cruelty.
Lolita The Boonie From Guam - Saved From The Streets And Loved Back To Health
Don't know why I look at these breaks my heart. Wonderful transformation god bless her saviour
My Husband And I Rescued Little Bowie Off The Streets Of Guam. He Was Covering In Ticks And Burs And His Back Leg Was Broken Presumably From Being Hit By A Car. And He Was Only 2 Months Old! Now, He’s 6 Months Old And Lives In Hawaii With 6 Humans That Adore Him. Rescue Is Beautiful.
Omg I live in Hawaii to I'm on Oahu and at one point my dad was deployed in Guam. What island are you on?
So many ticks! 😟 I'm happily surprised he's still alive (ticks are super dangerous, as they damage the liver and kidneys).
Dogs in rescue centers usually have a well-scheduled routine, where they get used to having their own space for meals and for resting. Nutkins’ advice is to “Ensure that you have provided some areas that will be quiet, secure, and away from busy thoroughfares such as the hallway so that your new shelter dog will be able to have a chance to rest.”
Secondly, it’s important that the dog has a room or a designated space that is ‘theirs’ so that they do not feel overwhelmed by their new home and can retreat there at any time. According to Nutkins, “having too much space can put pressure on a dog to be aware of what is happening in all areas. By closing off doors and giving your new shelter dog just a couple of rooms, they can focus on the smaller environment better, and this can lower their stress.”
Always Hard To Believe These Two Pups Are The Same Dog! What A Few Years And A Lot Of Love Can Do
Is it the same dog? The top one has bulging eyes nearly on the side of its head and the bottom one has eyes that appear much more inset and centered. Or is it just me? Maybe it is just the difference in grooming?
I thought it was because the first picture there's no fur around the eyes, so they look nearer the side of the skull

This baby needed you so much. And truly looks loved. It takes a Angel to care so much. What a difference.

Anyone who allows a pet to be abused or neglected should be horse whipped and be publicly shamed. Might sound extreme, but so is the mistreatment of these sweet babies. To all who rescued and loved these dogs are the real heroes. I thank you!
Please tell me how he got rid of the eye bags. I need to know for ....reasons. Thanks... Hi
And third, as an adoptive dog owner, you have to be patient. Remember that most rescue dogs have gone through more than any other dog in their lives, and some of those experiences have stayed with them. They can be more shy, hesitant, and nervous. Adjusting to the new family is likely to take time, and therefore you shouldn’t expect immediate results, Nutkins explained. No matter how hard the beginning might be, it shouldn’t scare potential dog owners away from rescuing a dog.
My Girl, Before And After Adoption. 1st Pic At The Shelter As A Stray Pup, 2nd After Being With Me For A Year And A Half
She looks like someone's sad, worn out teddy bear in the first pic and now she looks like the trail king.
Wow didn't see that one coming. What a beautiful baby your girl has become. You are a angel 😇 and so is she.
This Is Lenore Before And After Being Rescued ! After Receiving Lots Of Love & Tlc, Lenore Does Not Even Look Like The Same Dog Anymore
Dogs with mange always look so forlorn and almost dead inside, it's so sad :( glad this one made a happy recovery and is smiling and full of life again <3
So I got my Chihuahua manson from an animal shelter. The deal was that I would go in, meet her and if things went well they would have her fixed and I could pick her up in a few days. We'll I show up for the meet and greet. They've already fixed her. They let me sit with her, mentions that she's a biter and basically beg me to take her. They didn't even charge me a fee. I love that dog, her names manson, and she's never bitten me.
I wad thinking how her name was cool. I try to use people names that are outdated. I had a Stella, i have a Mable and a Clairesse also. I always hive them middle names too.

Load More Replies...Adopting a dog with special needs or an elderly dog may be more tricky. Although older dogs deserve love and care just like younger pets do, many people feel reluctant to adopt a senior woofer for various reasons. They include anything from veterinary costs to the fact that you will have shorter time together than if you would have adopted a puppy.
There are some more things to know about taking care of elderly dogs, so we reached out to Lori Bierbrier, the Senior Medical Director in Community Medicine at ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
Bierbrier explained that dogs begin to show visible age-related changes at about seven to 12 years of age. “The most common sign that your dog is aging is a decreased activity level. Some of this is part of normal transition from being a young puppy to being an adult. But, it can also be associated with osteoarthritis and other degenerative changes. There are metabolic, immunologic and body composition changes, too.”

It's what shot by BB guns, small spheres made of metal or plastic which can be very painful and dangerous at close range. I assume this poor girl was used as a practice target by some sadistic a*****e. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BB_gun

Dachshund/Chihuahua Rescued Sept 3rd
Are you sure this adorable little dog isn't also part helicopter due to that tail?
I've got a weakness for dogs I prefer the company of my dog over say 80% of people I know.b/c I know for a fact he has no ulterior motives other then love oh and food, water and safe place
Wow you wouldn't think it was the same fur baby. All that love brought out the beauty that was hiding. You can see the love now and especially in that tail.
Between that unbelievable tail(!) and those radar ears, you have brought a sweet pup back from the brink. Bless you and all those who helped save her.
According to the senior medical director at ASPCA, some of these may be unavoidable while others can be managed with appropriate diet and exercise. “When feeding your older dog, the main objective should be to maintain health and optimum body weight, slow development of chronic disease and minimize diseases that may already be present.”
From The Streets Of Qatar To The Great White North. Happy 3 Months On Canadian Soil To My Amazing Boys!
I live in Qatar and yes, it is heartbreaking sometimes. There is a big problem with street dogs and cats, but only a couple of animal shelters run by charities with no government support. Most of the population here are Expats and a large proportion of them have adopted as many as they can handle. But there’s always more since the street dogs aren’t neutered. People do leave food and water out for them and try to help out. I wouldn’t say it’s an exclusively Muslim thing, although there isn’t really a big culture of pet ownership here. Except for falcons and racing dogs of course. I hadn’t even been here 3 months and I “acquired” a stray puppy. By the time I leave I’ll probably have a pack 😂
Well if you think about it, we're part of a pack and they become part of ours, or rather, they let us become part of theirs!
Load More Replies...Unfortunately, many Islamic leaders who steer the Muslim population over the centuries have created a great deal of misinformation. Dogs were a huge part of Islamic culture. They used to populate the area in and around the Ka’aba (the black square in Mecca) were the worthy companions of shepherd and so on. No one would chase them away while prayers were going on during the Prophet’s lifetime and for centuries after. It was only after the discovery of Rabies (saliva/drool) that Muslims started getting paranoid about disease etc., to the extent that many have developed an intolerance and would see them as pests. The treatment of such wonderful creatures is a huge shame and completely unacceptable - I have adopted many rescues and they sleep indoors, on their own beds (except my APBT who sleeps on my bed lol).
I have seen quite a few Muslim families keep dogs and love them to death.
I've always wondered how dogs are treated in Muslim majority countries, since their religion is against having dogs as pets (correct me if I'm wrong). I know dogs are treated very well in Türkiye, but what about Saudi, Pakistan, Indonesia, Qatar and more? Anyone with first hand information or experience?
They are described as worthy companions in the Quran which is the ultimate word. It’s misinformation that has created the intolerance we see now.

A Year Later
You can see the love in the eyes. Where before you couldn't. Lucky baby found the love in you ❤️
I dare anyone seeing this transition, as well as all the rest here, saying animals don't have feelings. Anyone with basic emotional intelligence can clearly see the differences in the postures and physiognomy of these poor souls in the before and after shots. Hopelessness, resignation, sadness, low self-esteem vs. hope, joy, feeling appreciated and loved. No soul should ever feel unappreciated and mistreated, least of all those of the creatures who haven't got the means to stand up for themselves in the face of human cruelty.
Moreover, as your dog ages, health issues may arise, including deterioration of skin and coat, loss of muscle mass, more frequent intestinal problems, arthritis, obesity, dental problems and decreased ability to fight off infection.
“When dogs are growing older, they may not show outward signs that we normally associate with pain like whimpering or crying. Sometimes an animal will continue to eat or drink in spite of pain or disorientation. Some physiological and behavioral signs that your pet might be experiencing pain include excessive panting or gasping for breath, reclusiveness, reluctance to move and food pickiness,” Bierbrier explained.

How can those owners look at that dog in that condition? I'm glad you saved her
I hope he went to jail. I just want to hold her and love her. But she is lucky you angels saved and loved her.
The most important thing you can do for your elderly pet, just like any adopted pet, really, is to minimize any pain or distress they are experiencing. Bierbrier suggests consulting with your veterinarian and treating any health problems, since undiagnosed issues can cause discomfort and rapid deterioration.
Moreover, you will have to surround your pet with their favorite things, like a warm blanket or special squeaky toy. “Since pressure sores can develop in pets with limited mobility, it’s also essential to provide a warm sleeping spot with plenty of cushioning.”
From Being Abandoned And Chained Up In Romania To A Happy, Healthy And Sun-Loving Sweetheart
What a beautiful baby and you can see all the love that makes this baby shine.
I'm sorry to say that yes, this happens in my country. Generally speaking we are not the most animal-loving people, unless the animal brings us benefits, and even then there are some who barely give them the survivable minimum in terms of shelter and food. As for more higher-levels ideas such as animals being worthy of respect and basic decency..... let's not go there. Many Romanians don't apply those principles to fellow humans, let alone animals. This guy here is one of the more fortunate cases, many others don't look nearly as descent before being rescued (if they aren't shot, maimed or burned to death before that)

Our Sweet Boy Before & After We Adopted Him
You can see nothing but pure love in his face. He is so handsome and happy.
Another thing to consider before taking a senior dog to your forever home is that some older pets may develop incontinence or the loss of bladder control. Bierbrier reminds owners to be sure to check your furry friend regularly for any wetness or soiling. “If your pet needs help getting up to urinate or defecate, you can purchase a sling or use a large towel to wrap under their body and assist them.”
“It is also important to maintain a consistent diet as older animals are more prone to stomach upset from a change in food. That being said, if your dog needs something extra special in their food to keep them excited to eat, be sure to consult with your veterinarian for recommendations of safe items to add,” she explained.

My Myanmar Village Dog Before And After Adoption
From In The Shelter And Scared Last Wednesday To Forever Home And Happy. Meet Paisley
Animals, just like people, need time to adjust to new routines and changes, especially if their mobility may decrease as they age. Bierbrier argues that you can help your pet by being patient and giving them time to get acquainted with their new normal. “Depending on what challenges your pet might be facing as they age, there are many steps to make your home safer and more comfortable. Remove any wires and other items from the floor that could cause your pet to fall or trip.”
She also suggests moving plants and fragile objects to a safe area that is out of reach for your dog. “Create a safe space in your home for your pet to be away from any additional stressors,” Bierbrier concluded.

Georgia, A 5 Y/O Golden Retriever Rescued From A Puppy Mill Associated With The Dog Meat Trade
Unfortunately, Dog meat trade is thriving in some parts of Nigeria and there's only so much one could do. How do you convince someone to give up dog meat, when you are guilty of eating beef, pork, chicken and more? Dogs are pets to me, animals to love and cherish, but to some they are food and a means of livelihood. You can't just tell someone to give up their meat because you think it's cute, man's best friend (or other reasons). It's a conflicted argument. For this, the trade will keep thriving in China, parts of Africa, Asia, Europe and more. You want it stopped? Great! But you must also check your diet and be ready to fight for other animals too.
The fact that there are so many purebreed dogs that end up in the meat trade tells me they’re people’s pets that were stolen. The whole rotten trade just needs to STOP NOW!.
I agree with you on astronomical levels. What horrible people who do this.

Thank you for keeping them together. They already lost their mom. It would have been devastating to separate them, it was very kind of you!
They are so beautiful. They are lucky you are truly a angel mommy. God blessed them so you would find them.
This is why I'll never be able to adopt another animal. I have ovarian cancer, which is currently in remission, and I am 64 years old. Chances are, an adopted animal would outlive me and I couldn't do that to them. I ache for a kitten but it would be homeless should I die.

Nervous To Nested With Her Loving Older Brother (Also A Rescue)
Glad she has another dog with her, to help her get adjusted. All our present four-legged kids have been a huge help to all the new four-legged family members we’ve rescued over the years—-who then turn around and do the same for those we rescue after them. We live on a dead end street in a rural farm town, and people sometimes abandon pets here, even if they’re tiny babies, like the 5-6 week old kitten who didn’t even weigh a pound yet, who was dumped all by herself in our yard. She may have been tiny, but she sure had the lungs of an elephant, which helped us find her. It’s been decades since we’ve adopted from an animal shelter, because we seem to end up rescuing our fuzzy kids right off the street so much.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. For stepping up to the plate you have saved so many lives. I’m sure you already know this but I just want you to know how very much your love and devotion to such innocents is appreciated.

Bet she thinks she died and went to heaven, to get to live on a farm!
To all of you wonderful angels who took loving care of these dogs. You have a spot in heaven.

Imagine if love makes a dog so different, what can it do with a human being.
While the physical changes are heartwarming to see, the emotional changes, as evident by the smiles and how they hold their head high now, that's what makes me happy cry.
If there is a heaven, all these people and their doggos will definitely go there
My dog is currently migrating around the house because she can't figure out where she wants to eat her big beef bone, bought because it's been too bloody hot to take her for long walks or playtime and I was feeling guilty. How can people mistreat animals... how can you look at a dog and think "you don't have feelings".
I cried like hell reading these and upvoted each one out of love and respect. Two of my dogs are rescues and whilst the one grew into a happy confident boy, our girl Evie still has food issues ( she was like a skeleton with skin when I fostered her, covered in her own urine and only 6 months old, we thought she was older). People who rescue will have a seat at God's side in Heaven. I've seen some horrific things when helping out with finding rescue placements, fund raising etc, some humans do not deserve the love these animals constantly give even when broken. May all once loved and neglected animals one day know love, comfort and kindness
It’s OK to be angry at the assholes who mistreated these babies AND happy that they’re all now thriving in safe, happy, and very loving homes.
