Bear Cub Wanders Onto A Farm And Authorities Suggest Putting Her To Sleep But This Man Decides To Raise Her

An unexpected guest was recently wandering the village in the Borisovsky region, Belarus. A malnourished bear cub was looking for food, and one farmer came to the rescue. He now has a very unusual pet he never imagined owning.

Too young to be accepted at the zoo and definitely too young to survive in the wild alone, this story might have had a dramatic turn for the cute bear, but the tiny cub found a home on a farm owned by Nikolay Vasilievich Terletsky.

Terletsky, who sheltered the cub, was given two options: either return it to the wild or put it to sleep

Brown bears are very rare in Belarus and are threatened with extinction, so the species has been listed in the Red Book. Aware of the law, Terletsky has contacted all possible authorities regarding his special situation, but was left with the same answer: either return it to the wild or put it to sleep. Terletsky couldn’t let the little bear baby face this tragic fate.

Huntsmen searched nearby forests for two days, but couldn’t find any signs of the cub’s mother

The cub was too young to survive on its own, so little Vasilisa legally stayed on the farm

Huntsmen patrolled nearby forests for two days in hopes of finding any signs of the cub’s mother, but without success. The cub didn’t have any chance of surviving in the wild without her mother’s care and protection, so Terletsky decided to keep her on the farm. Eventually, a committee of competent specialists issued a “passport” for the bear cub, who, by that time, had gotten a name: Vasilisa. Now, the healthy and playful cub will start experiencing the world in a new way—surrounded by the love and care of humans.

Terletsky plans to build a huge enclosure for Vasilisa with an observation area

What does the future hold for this orphaned bear cub? The farm, which specializes in fish farming and has created a network of ponds, plans to launch touristic services, and Vasilisa would be a pleasant surprise for visitors. To make this happen, Terletsky wants to build a huge enclosure for the bear with an observation area.

It is a species in extension and they suggested to put her to sleep? Good thing that this nice man had common sense and love in his heart to save her.

Sadly, our bureaucracy has no common sense – only scripts that they're afraid to break.

I don't think a future in an enclosure is 'bright' by a bears' standard but Iit's certainyl better than death. And it's certainly very sweet how these tough faced blokes fall in love with a wee bear cub.

I just cant understand how there are countries that let (in this case suggest) people to kill endangered species. It baffles me. Or like some say "harvest", because animals are like berries that you joyfully pluck out of the wild while doing a harvest dance.

Harvesting over populated animals is actually very important for the ecosystem. Plus, at least for deer, it creates far fewer vehicle hits and a great source of meat for hunters and their families.

At least they are trying to build a big habitat. Since brown bears aren't super friendly to babies (males will eat them) it's her best bet. Mom might have been, sadly, hunted.

I love the fact that this guy saved this precious baby, but I really don't like the idea of putting it some enclosure for people to come at gawk at. That's not a life for a bear. It should be raised with the goal of being released back into the wild.

It doesn't really contribute to the conservation of endangered animals to hand-raise them alone, away from other members of their species. They won't be able to reintegrate into the wild, and they likely won't be able to safely interact with others of their species to breed. I agree, for emotional reasons, with saving the bear cub, but hand-raising is likely not better for conservation than putting it down.
