Common knowledge isn't that common. Sure, you can't know everything, and excelling in one area often means neglecting another, but things like first aid and the definition (and use) of free speech should be universally understood. At least, in the perfect world — it's in everyone's best interest.

But, again, they're not. So when Reddit user CasualBeers made a post on the platform, asking its users to share basic facts that they've noticed a surprisingly large number of people don't know, folks immediately started listing their suggestions. Here are some of the most popular ones.

35 People Who Noticed An Alarming Number Of Individuals Not Knowing Basic Facts Share What They Were How vaccines work. If they “make you sick,” it’s because they’re working! Your body is mounting a defense and creating antibodies to help fight off infection. A lot of really smart scientists have devoted their entire lives to keep us safe against life-threatening infection and people who have no medical training refuse them. It seems pretty idiotic and cavalier to me

So many people don’t seem to understand grey area or nuance. I see it a lot with politics and opinions. I learned early on growing up with my siblings that sometimes you can both be kinda right or wrong and that just because someone did something hurtful doesn’t necessarily mean it was their intent to hurt, but so many people are so quick to vilify others for deeds or opinions (obviously this isn’t counting objectively wrong stuff like most crime or bigotry)

Regular soap is not antibacterial (does not kill bacteria). Bacteria can live on soap. But soap and water is excellent at mechanically washing away bacteria.

As I understand it, no amount of soap will kill bacteria, but soap reduces surface tension of water, effectively making it wetter and better at scooping up bacteria and allowing you to rinse it down the drain. The key is to rub your soap hands together for 30 seconds to sweep most of the bacteria up, then rinse. Properly washing your hands is much better than using antibacterial soap because the bacteria can't evolve to withstand it the same way bacteria evolves to withstand antibiotics and antibacterial soaps and such. Also, antibacterial things and antibiotics do diddly against a virus, but proper handwashing is effective at removing viruses from hands as well.

Most bacteria have a lipid cell wall. Soap molecules adhere to water on one end, and to lipids on the other. With rubbing and sufficient time, the bacteria are removed, and the cell walls destroyed as well, thus killing the bacteria.

No, but rubbing creates friction necessary to destroy bacterial and viral outer coating as well as lifting diet and oil from the skin to rinse away. Sudsing is just a visual metaphor for it.

I've seen ads lately for "anti-microbial shower heads" that 'imply' that because their holes are so small it prevents germs. (Look at them, the openings are plastic which does nothing to prevent germs from collecting.) First, copper pipe and brass fittings (which are copper and zinc) are ALL anti-microbial. Some chromes are too. Running the water for even a couple of minutes to get it hot is more than enough to eliminate any surface germs. It's a solution for a non-existent problem. chrome-fix...059813.jpg chrome-fixed-shower-heads-53552-76_600-634d1cd059813.jpg

Actually soap is not anti bacterial as you put it. The act of washing is actually what cleans. Soap made from fat for example could be very good at growing bacteria. Anti-bacterial and additives were added as science progressed as soap on its own was not sufficient for anything requiring bacteria free situations. Had you pick sanitizer or similar we would have been in agreement.

Actually, this is NOT true that all soaps are anti bacterial. I had a growth on one of my ovaries removed and the nurse who called me the day before my surgery for final prep was ADAMANT that I use a bath soap that was specially labeled anti bacterial on the wrapping. She even named a few. No other soap was acceptable and to shower on the night before the surgery and the morning of the surgery. So no! Not all soaps are anti bacterial!

The good news is that antibacterial products don't work. Given that the overwhelming majority of bacteria have nothing to do with humans, and a significant percentage of those that do are beneficial, this is good news. Given that bacteria evolve at a rate measured in hours, the primary outcome of effective anti-bacterial household products would be product-resistant bacteria.

Yes, you should "hot the pot", but not put the kettle back on the boil. The few minutes it cools is perfect to make the tea. So, warm your tea pot with a small amount of water after the kettle boils, swirl the water in the pot, pour out that water, put the tea in the pot and add the rest of the water. Then enjoy!
