Common knowledge isn't that common. Sure, you can't know everything, and excelling in one area often means neglecting another, but things like first aid and the definition (and use) of free speech should be universally understood. At least, in the perfect world — it's in everyone's best interest.

But, again, they're not. So when Reddit user CasualBeers made a post on the platform, asking its users to share basic facts that they've noticed a surprisingly large number of people don't know, folks immediately started listing their suggestions. Here are some of the most popular ones.

#1

35 People Who Noticed An Alarming Number Of Individuals Not Knowing Basic Facts Share What They Were that freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say whatever you want without consequences or other people giving you s**t about it. it just means you can't go to jail for criticizing the government.

Lies ARE protected free speech (barring libel and slander) and one has the right to spread them. That's why it's important to look at the facts, stay informed and educate yourself.

(1) Besides the gov't Not being able to censor what citizens say (with a few exceptions), Freedom of Speech also means the gov't can not compel citizens to say something (like the Pledge of Allegiance in the US).

I hate the pledge of allegiance. It's pledging allegiance to a *flag* - why would I have allegiance to a flag? I at least could understand if it was just pledging allegiance to the US in general, but why is the flag the central part of it? And also take out god - like for all the citizens who aren't christians. So, maybe I could get behind: "I pledge allegiance to the republic of the United States of America - one nation, with liberty and justice for all." It's ironic that it's "under god, with liberty . . . for all." That "liberty" should exclude the "under god" part because we have liberty to not believe in any god

It's consistently amazed me there are those who fail to understand that distinction...using a private party platform does not (nor should it) entitle anyone to spout whatever they'd like. As you said...terms & conditions, too many fail to read the fine print when creating their account!

Also, that explanation is not justification. As a teacher, I have a massive number of students who think that having an explanation for not meeting a deadline or getting a failing grade they are entitled to extensions or extra credits. The worst is when those excuses are on the tone of "I did not have time" or "I made a really big effort, can you pass me please?" Dude, I hate to break it to you, but that's just not how the world works. Still, many adults think like that too...

Not American, but I don't think that's _quite_ what it means, more that the government cannot censor what you say, whether it's critical of them or not, but you can (and should) still be held to account for libelous and/or slanderous statements. As Alex Jones is still finding out.

carolynpepsipromo avatar

The first central issue is whether it's a governmental entity. Like with search and seizure - if there isn't a governmental entity behind it, then it cannot be a 4th Amendment violation. If there is not governmental entity behind the consequences for one's speech, then it's not a 1st Amendment violation. Private parties who act separate from the government aren't held to the same standards. If a private party unlawfully seizes the property of another, it's theft, or a person, it's kidnapping. So there can be consequences, but not the same as the consequences that a government entity would suffer

I offer the interested reader a more comprehensive treatment of this terribly misunderstood subject: “There's No Such Thing As Free Speech: And It's a Good Thing, Too” by Stanley Fish. Although it is anchored in the days of the nascent US culture wars, it remains eye-opening as to what such a concept really demands.

Actually what it means is that the government doesn't have the right to censor your speech. They can't prevent you from publishing a magazine, or starting a newspaper, or posting whatever you want, where ever you want. But the first amendment does have limitations, you can't incite violence, you can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater when their isn't one, you can't publish child porn. Where people seem confused is the fact that, while you can publish, or given the internet more likely "host" whatever you want, or stand on a street corner shouting whatever nonsense you wish, no one is required to GIVE YOU A PLATFORM. Going on any website, is like going to someone elses house, You can say whatever you want, but they're entitled to bar you from the premise if they don't like what it is. That however doesn't make it any more justifiable that BP silences anything that 8 random people don't agree with.

It's long past time we reevaluated what comprises shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theater for the information age. It's now possible for anyone - including public servants entrusted with enormous power - to lie to millions of people with complete impunity. The US is dying of propaganda poisoning, and as citizens, we have little or no ability to hold those responsible accountable.

It seems pretty idiotic and cavalier to me

So many people don’t seem to understand grey area or nuance. I see it a lot with politics and opinions. I learned early on growing up with my siblings that sometimes you can both be kinda right or wrong and that just because someone did something hurtful doesn’t necessarily mean it was their intent to hurt, but so many people are so quick to vilify others for deeds or opinions (obviously this isn’t counting objectively wrong stuff like most crime or bigotry)

Yes, you should "hot the pot", but not put the kettle back on the boil. The few minutes it cools is perfect to make the tea. So, warm your tea pot with a small amount of water after the kettle boils, swirl the water in the pot, pour out that water, put the tea in the pot and add the rest of the water. Then enjoy!
