This Woman May Become The Youngest Congresswoman Ever, And Just A Year Ago She Worked As A Bartender On 18-Hour-Shifts
Within a year Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has gone from hard working bartender to successful politician. After an amazing victory in the Democratic party’s congressional primary, she may become the youngest congresswoman.
Alexandria grew up in the Bronx, New York. Her mother is Puerto Rican and her father is a Bronx native. She studied at Boston University and earned degrees in Economics and International relations. After graduating Alexandria came back to the Bronx to work in the education sector.
In 2008, at only 48 years old, her beloved father passed away from cancer. His death occurred during the recession and her family lost its primary source of income. It was under these circumstances Alexandria found herself working as a bartender and waitress on 18-hour shifts, to help her family. “My mother cleaned homes and drove school buses, and when my family was on the brink of foreclosure … I started bartending and waitressing. I understand the pain of working-class Americans because I have experienced the pain.” she said.
Her personal experience of financial struggle inspired her to create better lives for every family, so she set out to make a difference by running for office. “I started this race out of a paper bag. I had flyers and clipboards and it really was just nonstop knocking on doors and talking to the community,” she explained.
“Women like me aren’t supposed to run for office,” Alexandria said in her campaign video. However, at the age of 28, she won against political veteran Joe Crowley in the Democratic party’s congressional primary in New York City. If she wins against Republican candidate Anthony Pappas in the November mid-terms, she will become the youngest ever woman elected to Congress.

Share on FacebookThis is what we need in government now, No more old career politicians who are only interested in fattening their own wallets or not caring about the future of this country because they will not live long enough to see the repercussions of their decisions. I really hope that as a country we start demanding more from our politicians since the ones in office now don't care about the American people.
I've got mixed feelings about this. I wish her the best and think her running is a good idea but I come to BP to get away from 24/7 politics. I realize I didn't have to look but still...........
Yeah, well, unfortunately most everyone finds a way to stick politics into everything these days. I used to come here every day, and now I only come by once a week. Seems like even BP is no longer neutral, but they push an agenda too. I miss the days when everyone wasn’t angry and bitter all the time...and I’m not a Republican or a Democrat, so I’m not taking sides either way. But I get tired the half truths and inuendo and certain facts being left out of stories on both sides. Instead of this civil war that seems to be happening, I wish we could just be civil again...this has been happening for years...it wears me out. Sorry for the soap box, but it just gets oppressive sometimes.

I’m not ready to live in a socialist America. I’m not working my a$$ off just to have it taken from me and given to others so things are “even”. She wants to do away with money and with jails. Read her platform.
If redistribution of wealth is the part of socialism you're not ready for, that's unfortunate, considering the U.S. already does that.
Load More Replies...For anyone who thinks she is the future, you are mistaken. If she is the future, you won't have one. Did you see the platform she ran on? Free money for everyone. Free, free, free. She has a degree in economics? She can't comprehend basic math. Yet, she isn't the real problem. The real problem are the low information voters and idealists that elected her. They are responsible. She may do some good, but if she sticks to the programs listed on her platform, prepare to file for bankruptcy.
This is the dumbest article I have ever read. NO ONE is saying her age is why her story is newsworthy. This is literally the first I've heard of it. The win is special because she's a DEMOCRATIC-SOCIALIST who beat an old-school special-interest bloated Democrat with a huge budget compared to her modest budget made from private donations. What a completely shallow and stupid article. She is amazing- please find a REAL news source to learn more about her.
Just what this country needs...a Socialist/Communist in the government. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Isn't tRump in bed with Putin and Kim? Last I heard they were Communist.

u go girl bless u and all the love to ur future i see it as it is u got it
I hope the Democratic party learns from this, the people of this country are sick of politics as usual. I wish I could vote for her!
BP actually did an article on this sad excuse of a politician? She’s a fool! Socialism doesn’t work! She’s a mouth breather and an embarrassment to the Democratic Party!!
she did a good and hard job campaigning and won the right to be in the general election. But as a voter one should ask How the hell do you pay for what she wants? no boarders = no control of country, No ice? how do you enforce or prevent people who wish us harm from entering? Nothing in life provided by any government is free. I have found that socialism and communism is for the people not the government elites.
She's really unaware of her own damn privilege. She had no real work experience and was allowed to be a bartender making pretty decent money in a very expensive city. Men wanting the job need to work from the bottom up or get training on their own time and dime. WOmen can come in and be trained on the job and shadow other wait or bar staff all while making more than men in the same position (tendency to). She lived in Yorktown Heights for most her life, quite well to do. She has a poor grasp of how the branches of government work or the law of the land.
Frank you do realize that you are complaining about privilege and how she is unaware. Um... Majority of occupations pay men higher... but your griping about privilege?

We shouldn't turn our head just because we're convinced many of the worlds politicians are corrupt and greedy. Its about how we govern our entire world, its our freedom, our opportunities, our economy and more!. I think we have a social responsibility to be involved due to the very fact that much of government is flawed and this is a person doing that as a force for good!
'Abolishing ICE' will guarantee she DOESN'T get elected. But she's definitely a hottie.
when she becomes the first woman president and someone who changes the world...well you saw it here first
This may sound weird, but I don't want a "passionate" leader. They have agendas. Dispassionate people are better able to rule using the most evidence based, pragmatic decisions possible. I want my leaders to use their heads instead of their hearts because you get more sound decisions overall that way.

If she really wants to help the poor & win the election she should switch to the Republican Party because all the dumbocratic party does is keep the poor poor instead of encouraging them to excel and break the poor cycles!
