It’s almost time to go back to school, and for many young students, especially those who find reading difficult, it can be very stressful. That’s why, as part of the Back to School Bash in Comiskey Park in Dubuque, Iowa, local barber Courtney Holmes decided to do something special. The father of two decided to give free haircuts to kids who would read to him.
“The kids would come in, and I would say, “Go to the table and get a book you might like, and if you can’t read it, I’ll help you understand and we can read it together,” Holmes told USA Today. “To be honest, I was amazed. The line started with four kids, and next thing I knew it was like 20 kids, all waiting for a haircut and eager to read.”

Share on FacebookAwesome! Because of parents and a teacher who encouraged reading, I'm an avid reader today. This barber will forever be remembered by these kids.
This is so nice of him and he is doing good both ways, helping kids who have trouble reading and also helping families out that don't have
These are the heroes who deserve recognition. Forget the bubble-brained media 'stars' - this is the type of human being we should be praising and encouraging!
Just caught info about him on Rachel Ray. He received a $10k scholarship donation for his 2 kids.
It doesn't take much to be a hero. Even the smallest act of kindness and humanity makes someone's world better
I love this. What a great influence on the community. How nice to have a positive role model....maybe Nikki Minaj will take a hint.
Hats off to this barber. There is a major illiteracy problem in the world today. This one person is doing his bit in trying to solve it. There should be more people like him in the world.
Mr. Holmes, thank you for this thoughtful, generous, loving act. You are the kind of community jewel that teachers and parents dream about.
Hats off to those that encourages this kind of events and gatherings!
You, Courtney Holmes, are a true hero. I hope others will be inspired by your insight and generosity and follow your big heart to do what they can to help. Personally, you've inspired me to look into Big Brothers / Big Sisters for those I can help. Thank you for lighting the way, sir!
The finest thing you can do for the children please keep it going.
