Exploring The Creative Process Of Artist Barbara Chen
Barbara Chen is an artist whose work is defined by a deep understanding of the ever-evolving nature of her craft. Whether creating independently or working on a commissioned piece, her primary aim is to reflect the true spirit of her subject through her artistic lens. “My ultimate goal is to capture the essence of a subject in my own way.”
Her creative process begins with setting the atmosphere with music in her studio. To start a new piece, she relies on a photograph as her foundation. Using this as a reference, she begins by sketching her design with black and gray pencils. She uses a range of shades and precise lines, carefully mapping out the composition that will form the structural base of her work.
From here, Barbara allows the lines to flow naturally, letting the drawing evolve as she works. The initial pencil sketch often serves as a springboard for further exploration. Sometimes, this drawing forms the basis for a larger painting, with the pencil lines offering a starting point, but always subject to change. In her mind, it’s important that the process remain flexible—”After all, it’s a creative process.”
Barbara’s distinctive approach to drawing and painting was nurtured during her time in college. It was here that she honed her technique and developed a deep understanding of the art forms she continues to work with today. Over the years, her practice has matured, with each piece serving as both a reflection of her artistic evolution and a commitment to the creative process.
In every artwork, whether a drawing or painting, Barbara aims to go beyond the surface. Barbara Chen’s boundless creativity turns everyday subjects into fascinating works of art.
