Let’s do a quick experiment, shall we, Pandas? Think about the best teachers you’ve ever had. See how easily their faces pop up in your imagination? You’re probably even smiling. Okay, now think of the very worst teachers you’ve ever encountered. It feels awful, doesn’t it? The sad truth is that nearly everyone has to deal with at least one toxic educator who was out to make their life miserable. Teachers and professors hold a huge amount of influence in their students’ lives. And that power can be used for good, as well as for ill.

Bored Panda compiled this list of pics of people sharing examples of the most toxic teachers they have ever met. The type of behavior featured in this article is appalling. And it really makes you value quality educators even more.

Keep in mind that if you’ve had awful experiences at school, these pics might bring back some bad memories. Otherwise, feel free to tell us about the best and worst teachers you had at school. You’ll find our previous post about bad teachers over here, too. We know from experience just how much teachers can inspire us… or cause us to doubt ourselves.

Student’s Mom Had Cancer, And When She Missed School, Teacher Told Her That School Is More Important Than Home

that_incel Report

Bored Panda was interested to learn about building a sense of trust and openness between parents and children, as well as what to do if there are issues with specific teachers at school. We reached out to parenting blogger Samantha Scroggin, from Walking Outside in Slippers, who shared her thoughts on this with us.

"I always try to maintain an open dialogue with my kids, but it doesn’t always work as well as I’d hoped. I think we can’t expect our kids to open up to us on our timeline and our terms. They have to share when and if they want to, and us parents showing a genuine interest in what’s going on in our kids’ lives sets the groundwork for when they’re ready to open up," the blogger said.

Bored Teachers Regrading Students 7 Years Later

Bored Teachers Regrading Students 7 Years Later

SamuelBrownRBT Report

Patience and understanding are key for building trust, bit by bit. "Sometimes this can mean listening to them drone on about Pokemon and their friend drama at school," Samantha told Bored Panda.

"I feel like it’s just as important for parents to have an open dialogue with our kids’ teachers at school to see how they’re doing. We can’t always rely on our kids for the full picture, but it’s important to take our kids’ perspective on school situations into perspective," she suggested.

library_fae Report

Meanwhile, parenting blogger Samantha said that there's no one-size-fits-all approach when dealing with teacher-related issues. However, she revealed to Bored Panda what approach she took not too long ago.

"I actually recently had an issue with my daughter’s first-grade teacher. She is an older teacher who is not very responsive via the school’s email system. Because communicating with her was so difficult, I told the principal at the end of the school year about my struggles with the teacher. I then requested a teacher for next year who I know to be very responsive," the founder of Walking Outside in Slippers said.

"But I don’t think there is any right way to deal with school or teacher issues. I would defer to the parents to decide what is best for their child and situation," she added.

The Teacher Knew What She Was Doing

The Teacher Knew What She Was Doing

purplechrain Report

It sometimes feels like certain authority figures are out to get you. It’s not paranoia, though. Some people are so dissatisfied with their lives, so miserable and full of angst that they lash out at those around them.

Unfortunately, there isn’t an exam to thoroughly check if the person hoping to be a teacher is a completely decent human being. There are some bad apples among the droves of hard-working, empathetic educators.

When someone with a dislike for kids and education becomes a teacher, you can’t expect anything good. Some individuals have very low emotional intelligence, and they see their role in the classroom as purely technical: you put in the minimum required work, you get paid.

However, teaching is about far more than just classes, homework, and grading papers. For some, teaching is a calling. And they spare no expense in making their students’ lives better. They help guide them. They support them when they’re down. They thoroughly understand the massive responsibility they have weighing on their shoulders. And they do it anyway, even when they’re exhausted, under-appreciated, and given substandard pay. It’s these educators who we salute.

Yup, same happened to me. Only I had the extra misery of having a teacher for a dad too. Neither parents believed I needed glasses because, and I quote, "no one else in the family needed them so why should I?" Had to get two part time jobs to afford some. Didn't get my first pair of glasses and lenses until I was 16. Much of my schooling was literally a blur.

The way that we approach education in modern times is vastly different from how things were done for, well, pretty all of history. Generally speaking, students are a lot less independent these days. They’re shyer and less proactive, as well.

Childhood independence expert Lenore Skenazy, from Let Grown and the Free-Range Kids movement, went into this with Bored Panda during an earlier interview.

“In the United States, for instance, school only became compulsory a little over 100 years ago. Previously—for hundreds of thousands of years of human history—kids learned simply by watching, copying, helping, and playing,” she explained how learning used to take place.

“In other words, they’d hang around the adults, see how they made things like baskets and arrowheads, they’d ask questions, noodle around, and try to copy what their elders were doing. They’d also help out as soon as they could—fetching things, tracking animals, whatever—and in between they’d be playing with a group of mixed-age kids. All these activities were fueled by curiosity,” she told us.

But there are not multiple correct answers. And this would have been explained in the lesson preceding the worksheet or quiz given. While this seems relatively unimportant at the elementary school level, it becomes very important in upper level mathematics. It’s much easier, in the long run, to train children in the correct manner from the beginning.

Y'all are missing the point. It was about understanding the exact instructions! Look at the second statement above the problems. Using the structure of the word problem to help solve it. If the student had followed the structure of the problems, their answers would have matched the teacher's. This was actually a very good lesson!

I was taught multiplication like this, something about the word/number order meaning you would write it out like this. It's an incredibly stupid method since both ways give the same answer, but if the student was taught to do it like this to help them understand what a multiplication really was, then maybe the teacher has a point. You can see it says "use multiplication strategies" not just "multiply" - I think the test was on the (albeit stupid) method that was taught, which the student did not use.

Actually the correct form is 3+3+3+3+3 because it does not say five, three times (which would be 5 3 X) it says five times three (5 X 3) which means five times three shows up. The best way to understand it is the times does not mean multiply it means the number of occurrences so the number of times something shows up if that helps at all. You could also read it as three, five times if you like reading it that way to make sense but the placement of the times cannot be moved it has to be after the five. It may seem like there isn't a difference but when you have 5 times 3 happens, and then 3 times five happens it is two very different scenarios.

Not defending the teacher, but in math, 5x3 means, "Three, five times". It's another way of saying, "Five times, three." It's that old, "You got the right answer the wrong way" gotcha that teachers like to pull. They'll try to explain it using money. "If you buy five hotdogs for three dollars each..."

I feel like I would have given it back to the kiddo to try again with a verbal reminder, "check the order of the factors!" 5 groups of 3 are different from 3 groups of 5. A 4 by 6 array is different from a 6 by 4 array. Yes, the product is the same, but looking at this lesson, it looks like that wasn't the only thing being checked and graded.

Sorry, teacher was correct. Children are now being correctly taught that three x five and five x three are not the same thing. The first is (for example) three children each get 5 pieces of candy. The s3cond is five children each get 3 pieces of candy. As you can see it's still fifteen pieces of candy but any parent can tell you, not the same thing at all.

This one is a gray area for me. Sometimes a test is not just about the answers but HOW you get to the answer. It’s a comprehension thing and if it’s was about that here, it’s not the right answer. You use that method to show that there are more ways than one but still get the same results. I’ve worked with NPF students for almost 20 years and this is a big thing in math that they often fail to comprehend. I also have ADHD and struggled with math in school.

It's really critical to learn the order for the numbers. 5x3 in measurement is not the same as the inverse and a mistake like that can be costly later. Order of Operations...In mathematics and computer programming, the order of operations is a collection of rules that reflect conventions about which procedures to perform first in order to evaluate a given mathematical expression. You work on a farm. There's a truck with 15 bales of hay on it. Farmer tells you to make 5 piles, with 3 bales each. You proceed to make 3 piles with 5 bales each. You've effectively failed the assignment. They are teaching kids to think and not simply memorize. I understand it's frustrating for parents and individuals who weren't taught the same way, but it pays off in dividends down the road.

Unfortunately, in some states, teachers are teaching for the end of the year exams which have specific rules to follow. Try to be understanding that teaching stratagies are often forced onto the teachers. If you want to pass the exams then understand you will have to solve the problem and show the answer correctly to get your answers marked correctly. Often in multiple step problems, if you make a mistake on one part then the whole thing will be marked wrong. (E.g. If the answer was right but the dots were drawn in the wrong sequence.) Many teachers teach what they are told to teach and how to teach it. It's very stressful for both them and the students.

My son, who does complex algebra in his head, was brining home a D in 7th grade math. I asked to see his assignments before turning them in to make sure he wasn't missing some concept as I am also good at math. He was still getting low scores, which made no sense because I knew his answers were right. So I checked the grading itself. The teacher was marking him wrong if it didn't match how the answer was presented on her grading key, even though the book did not specify the answer format. Ex: The book said "solve" followed by some equations using fractions but did not specify if the answer had to be a proper fraction. If the key said the answer was 2 1/2, she would mark him wrong if he had 2.5 or 5/2. I asked her to explain herself. The response was a regraded paper and a note about appreciating me helping him with his homework. Lady, I wasn't helping him with his homework, I was doing your grading for you since you couldn't figure out that 5/2 = 2 1/2.

As a teacher I see the reasoning. The teacher isn’t dumb. They are just giving the correct answer for the particular question. The ‘X’ symbol can be also read as ‘groups of’. The question asked the student to show ‘5 groups of 3’ and ‘4 groups of 6’. They didn’t show it. Obviously the answer is still the same but the student didn’t show the required answer. The student of course understands repeated addition, arrays and commutative properties so it definitely could be argued but the teacher is just being very precise in their marking which may have been a requirement to show close reading of the exam paper.

Not only is this stupid, but the teacher also flipped strategies each time. Either you repeat the first number the second number of times, or vice versa (or, more reasonably, it should be interchangeable), but the teacher didn't even do the same thing each time!

The lesson is teaching how to "read" math. 5x3 is read 5 sets of 3 items in each set. An array literally means Rows times Columns. Hence 4 ROWS times 3 COLUMNS. Both of these concepts are the framework that all the other concepts are built on such as the cummunative property etc. Excellent worksheet!!

And that is the reason the teacher gave 4/6 for a grade. However the concept being taught is not to find the solution of 15 but rather it is to explain the MEANING of 5 times 3.

Teacher is absolutely right on this one. 5x3 and 3x5 are not same mathematical expressions regardless of obvious same result of 15. 5 groups of quantity of 3 are not same as 3 groups of quantity of 5. Those are two different processes that can have different implications regardless of final result. Real life example would be the following. Imagine you have to pay debt of 15k usd. It is not the same if you pay in 5 payments each of 3k usd, or you pay 3 payments each of 5k usd. Longer period with smaller payments vs short period with larger payments and that's is a big difference. Also many similar examples in economics, engineering, computer science and other field why equivalence of final result toes not mean equivalence of process.

No one questions the validity of commutative property axb=bxa, but that equation does not address distribution of quantities, just the fact that if you swap groups of quantities the result is the same. However, process is not. Simply speaking, equivalence of result does not imply equivalence of process to get to that result. Imagine you have to pay debt of 15k usd. It is not the same if you pay in 5 payments each of 3k usd, or you pay 3 payments each of 5k usd. Longer period with smaller payments vs short period with larger payments and that's is a big difference. Or 3 bundles of 5 bananas is different from 5 bundles of 3 bananas although they total to the same number of 15 bananas.

I was 5 when I started having problems with stupid authority in school. I remember the instant very well. We came back from pony lessons, and had to draw the arena. Teachers always told me to draw straight instead of all over the place. So to comply for once, I drew sand as dots in a straight line. The teacher comes to me, laughs and says in a way everyone can hear "this is so stupid, have you ever seen sand aligned like this ?" This day on I decided that I would never let anyone talk to me like this ever again, teenage years were tough but I stood my ground. Some teachers are plain evil who just like crushing children's souls as a living.

I was a math teacher for 6 years. Not because I'm a qualified math teacher but because when I was applying as a History teacher they couldn't find anybody to teach math an I'd taken more math than any other applicant. Given a Philosophy major who went back to school for History education certification was the best they could do for a Secondary Level and Special Education Math teacher I'm not surprised by seeing teachers of this quality.

I am a teacher and I also disagree because of the commutative property... we cannot act like it doesn't exist!!!! However, a teacher does NOT create the content or curriculum. The teacher's job is to implement curriculum as instructed. In this case, the teacher did their job, if this lesson was used as that teacher's observation they would have been commended on giving that comment,... YES student work is submitted when teachers have quarterly observations

As a beta this makes me cringe! I've had teachers like this. They often aren't really that good at math and pretend there is only one right way to do it. I actually had a teacher in my final year who took me to the director and ended up having to acknowledge on front of class that, math problems are often solveable in different ways. And this is what I try and teach my children. Yes there are methods to learn, but in the end solving a problem in a correct manner is the most important thing.

She was grading based on the student's understanding of the second statement above the problems. If they had followed the structure of the problems, their answers would have matched hers. It's about understanding instructions.

Teacher Making You Feel Bad For Using The Bathroom

Teacher Making You Feel Bad For Using The Bathroom

Flarebomb Report

Unfortunately, these days, children are less curious and have trouble with motivation. That’s not to say that things are all bad. However, there’s a tendency for students to be passive (because that’s how schools work; they demand compliance) and to lack a focused inner drive.

“One reason kids might seem less curious today is because most of their education, inside and outside of school, doesn’t require self-motivation, it requires compliance. The drive is extrinsic, not intrinsic. Kids fill out worksheets because they have to, not because these seem interesting, or have any immediate connection to the ‘real’ world,” Lenore said.

“Learning soccer means doing the drills the coach assigns, as opposed to tagging along with the older kids and working hard to get good enough so that they’d start letting you play. The key to curiosity, then, is giving kids enough free, unstructured time for them to find something they love to do for its own sake—not for a grade, or coach,” the childhood independence author shared how students are more passive during extracurricular activities as well.

“Put some junk out there—old suitcases, blankets, buckets—whatever you’ve got. Of course, at first, the kids might be bored. Scratch that: They will be bored. They’ll want to come back in and grab the iPad. Resist the temptation to let them in or entertain them,” she said.

This definitely isn’t the worse one, and may even be justified - I got the only 10 in the whole school for music one year - even though this class was known to be the easiest 10 ever - because the teacher wanted to acknowledge that I put so much extra effort in - I was the only one insane enough to spend literally every lunchtime doing extracurricular music. Including a string quartet with 3 teachers (yes, it made me super popular, not that I ever was in the first place…). And to be fair, he was probably sick of everyone treating his class like a joke (although it kind of was…) and using the hour to do homework for other classes. He went back to giving practically everyone 10s the year after, but it was nice to be acknowledged like that just once.
