Remember watching something in a movie you wanted to repeat? Well, fiction is not only there for escapism; many writers/filmmakers want spectators to be wiser and adapt lessons characters learned to real life. They convincingly use words, directing, cinematography and music to portray emotions. Of course, not every film has a profound lesson in it. Some are pure entertainment or teach bad lessons. And that's ok.
Anime and gaming fan Micu was thinking about what an "awful message" the musical Grease delivers and asked Reddit "What's a movie that teaches a really bad lesson?" She received over 6k responses. Rom-coms and action movies got a lot of smack in the thread. Scroll down for the best ones, and an interview with Micu.

Any movie that teaches the idea that if you're persistent, then you'll get the girl/guy.
Micu herself gave some opposite examples—the good lessons. "I recently watched ‘Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop’ which was about loving yourself as well as all your flaws and accepting love from other people. Also, ‘Dead Poet Society’ teaches you to seize the day."

Fifty Shades of Grey.
It’s a movie about a guy who was ab$#ed perpetuating the cycle of abuse with the thin veneer of “it’s okay because he’s rich and this is how BDSM works.” The f%^k it does; almost all the characters are all sh$^ty people. Period.
13 reasons why. Not a movie, but is basically plays to the fantasy of any teenager who’s thinking of harming themselves how everyone will run around afterwards trying to piece it all together and they’ll still be a big part of peoples lives when they’re gone.
The sad reality is that this is not true and it’s a terrible message to give to kids.
As a suicide surviver I can confirm that people don't grow souls just because someone died. If they didn't care when you were alive they won't care when you're dead. The flip side is anyone who did care is deviated.
If Micu was making a movie with an unusual moral, she would want to communicate that good isn't always rewarded with good: sometimes the good goes to bad people instead, to give spectators expectations of "just how the world works."
Cats. It teaches impressionable Hollywood producers that it's a good idea to make a movie like Cats.
The whole Twilight series. Edward and Jacob are both controlling pricks at best, and Bella is too spineless to put them in their place.

Not to mention the fact that the whole plot is obviously a not-so-subtle metaphor about "no sex before marriage".

Yeah I think most people realise this isn’t realistic, I mean they’re not actually people are they? Many of the characters are vampires or werewolves, fictional beings, not humans, so they wouldn’t have emotions like humans because…they’re not.

If you haven't read the books, you really shouldn't be remarking on this. I absolutely love them to pieces, and both Bella dna Jacob in the movies are complete nonsense compared to how they are in the books. Love Esme though. she really caught the baton and ran with it.

Definitely the worst part of these books/movies is that they were aimed at teen girls and one character was completely obsessed and controlling, and the other blew hot and cold every five seconds, and both were portrayed in a romantic and "desirable "light. Absolutely horrific. Don't get me started on sparkly vampires either.

Most high school movies. There's nothing wrong with wearing glasses. Characters barely ever study etc.

50 shades of gray. Creepy dude gets viewed as elegant and mysterious just because he’s rich
40 days and 40 nights. It's about a girl who's a total slot but she decides to challenge herself not to have sex for 40 days. She's doing fine until her friend makes a website about it and a being pool starts. Suddenly everyone is trying to get her in bed.
Meanwhile she meets this really great guy who teaches her that love doesn't have to involve sex, you can have a great time and even be intimate without f@#king.
Still, she's so horny, you guys. At the end of the 40 days, she literally handcuffs herself to a bed to keep from letting anyone f@#k her.
The pool is up to huge amounts of money now.
Then her ex boyfriend walks in. He sees her tied up, so he ra&#s her. He claims the prize money and literally rides off into the sunset.
The s*#^ty girl is upset because her awesome new boyfriend might not accept her now that she cheated on him by being r&#ed but it turns out he's ok with it.

Revenge of the Nerds can’t even claim it’s satirical. The nerds are just as bad - if not worse - than the jocks. Yes the jocks started it by running a few pigs through their party. What the nerds do is far worse but really only at the expense of the easier targets - their women.
Other than the humility of losing in what is effectively a few competitions they cheat at (along with some Tigers Balm in their jockstraps), the Lambdas don’t really get revenge on the jocks, they take it out on their women.
First they spy on them in the nude. Then they distribute the nude photos to the school. Finally Lewis r*^es Betty Childs. All because like four girlfriends helped the jocks with the pigs?
And the idea that it’s okay because Lewis is good in bed is beyond disturbing. She doesn’t just accept it, she decides she’s “in love with a nerd.” That movie was written by some serious incels.
Almost all 90's comedy movies are like this. "I have a problem with this guy so I'm gonna get his girlfriend or wife in bed and then somehow it's all her fault in the end!"
Overboard - she has amnesia so he convinces her she is his wife & mother to his 3-4 kids. Then he has sex with her.

The original story described is from the 80's with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell and not the picture above which is the remake!(edit:picture was changed after my comment) In the remake is the other way around! It was already cringe even for the 80's and i have no idea who decided that this story had any place in today's society!!

It's a great movie and one of the only realistic ones. A woman realizes too late she lost her love and embarrassing hurts people acting like a complete suitcase trying to win him back. the only unrealistic part is when he forgives her.
Not a movie, but the kids' show "Caillou" is fucking terrible. It's made for kids at the age where they copy everything they see, and the main little fucker in the show crys and whines the whole time, so kids who watch it become insufferable.
Bad lesson for kids, good lesson for parents who will learn about "modeling."

Hocus Pocus, Max gets relentlessly harassed and bullied almost the entire movie for being a virgin
I was actually quite surprised when rewatching this movie in college (hadn't seen it since I was a kid) and discovering that the "virgin" bit was so thoroughly emphasized. Especially because it's Max's little sister who keeps bringing it up. Someone who shouldn't even know what a virgin is to begin with at her age.

That's not the message I got from that movie at all. To me, it's when needs in a relationship aren't met for a prolonged period of time, or when people lose themselves in the flow of a relationship that they actually feel trapped in, people can make bad decisions, for which they ultimately can be forgiven for, if the appropriate effort is done. (emphasis on 'can' and not 'should')

Diary of a Wimpy Kid. All 3 (There was never a 4th) films (and the books by extension) teaches readers that You can be an a-hole and get away with it (mostly).
Reality Bites - Being a miserable, lazy, pretentious asshole who treats women like s#&t gets you chicks while the generous, nerdy, hard worker who does everything to help a girls career gets dumped.
Just because you're the generous nerdy hard worker doesn't mean you'll get the girl, or deserve her. Attraction is weird and it is up to her.
Cheaper by the Dozen teaches that as a parent you can make a selfish decission and it won't matter because your kids will feel guilty if they call you out for that.

The story "teaches" that you should learn to trust people. Literally everyone they meet gives them a reason not to trust them. Makes absolutely no sense.
It's less about blind trust and more about recognizing that we are more than just our actions. When we take the time to learn about one another, we come to understand one another and our motivations. When you do that, trust can develop; when you push everyone away because of first impressions, it never will. The naivete of Sisu is supposed to highlight how blind trust is misguided, and the characters learning about one another and finally deciding to trust each other and work toward a common goal is the real lesson.

The moral of the story was that fighting is not as important as family and health, like Rocky and Apollo experienced, then fighting again becomes a huge risk to everything he loves.. and what does he do... fights anyway.

I might get schooled and downvoted for this, but - no, I'm not going to defend any of these films, I dislike most of these tropes just as much as everyone else - I just think we should change our approach to how we see the entertainment industry. It's entertainment, not documentary. We shouldn't expect a work of fiction to teach us anything. If it does teach something good, besides being entertaining, that's wonderful, but not every film is there to teach anything. So many nice films have been ruined by this approach because people taught it "was teaching a bad lesson", while really, no, the film was just supposed to make you reflect upon what you just saw, possibly making you create your own new thoughts. And, before you school me on how sensitive is the youth, I was always taught that fiction is no reality and thus need not be emulated in real life. Heck, there are things that are funny BECAUSE you wouldn't do them in real life.
So, yes, please, change the cliché tropes, but let's not get all self-righteous about it. End of my Ted Talk. *bows*

Reading these felt like I was in my living room watching a movie with my wife who pin points and has something to say about every moment. I get it, some movies teach the wrong things and not very realistic. I was never a fan of movies where main protagonist, no matter man or woman, no matter how good looking they are, just forcefully kisses someone they like without asking, just assuming they are irresistible because they are soooo good looking. Even when it's a woman who plays "femme fatale" and just jumps on some poor schmuck and we are supposed to think it's sexy? Or man who is like "ruggedly handsome" and grabs a woman and kisses her. It's not ok. Ask first, ask on a date, flirt at least to see if the other side is interested.
And another thing.....if you work hard enough you can attain your dreams. Sorry but no. Look at the ratios - the number of people who actually hit the big time vs the number who start out, particularly in the creative arts. Sure, work hard at your talent, but have a fall back as chances are that without a little bit of luck and a whole lot of support and money behind you, it won't be happening.
another bad lesson: in the Ryan O'Neal movie "Love Story" (1970), the bottom line message is "Love means you never have to say you are sorry". Nope, hate to tell you, but the author missed it... If you love someone & want to continue in a long-term relationship, you will have to say that you are sorry more than quite a few times... The relationship will have to be regularly renegotiated with growth and progress, commitment, and recommitments, or it will fail. What sort of charmed life did the author base this nonsense on? Nonsense!! Maybe he stopped saying "sorry" because he knew she was under a death sentence since leukemia was untreatable back then.

1-Early Bond movies have James raping women. 2-Any national disaster movie about plagues, zombies, aliens, etc. that show America (or the world) rallying together to overcome. We have seen what would happen during plagues or zombies. As far as the a** kicking politicians putting themselves on the line for the good of the country, well let's just say lol to that idea.

Any film that tells you to Be Yourself (I'm looking at you Disney). Yes, lots of us need to get a lot better at accepting the good in us, but not one of us doesn't have things we need to work on as well. Myself is a grumpy, short-tempered cow when at home with my family, for their sake, I need to work on the reasons for that and exercise some self-discipline while I'm a wip.

Phantom of the Opera - really, really creepy - like we understand he didn't have love, but still, his actions and obsession doesn't make it romantic.

I guess every Woody Allen movie is a bit sexist (I haven't watched them all), but last was You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger: a middle aged man stalks his young neighbour, persuaded her to get lunch together after several no's, tells her he's been stalking and enjoys watching her naked, and asks her to give him more shows of that (even after he finds out she's engaged and getting married soon). This is already unacceptable, but the worst part is that they actually end up together!
The Pokémon movies teach us that they're not canon, and TV Ash doesn't know the awesome adventures Movie Ash has had.
The Lion King: If you see meerkats and/or warthogs in real life, you should not approach them. They can't talk, sing or make funny jokes. You can't become friends with them. They should best be left alone in their natural habitat. It's a bloody f*cking outrage what Disney made me believe when I was only 12 years old.
But seriously now. I think it's funny how nobody ever seems to be bothered by the really bad ones. Like history channels' show Vikings. This one basically teaches you can become wealthy, powerful and famous by raiding, murdering and raping your way across Europe.

Nobody has mentioned 'Pretty Woman' so I'll add it on. I never liked the movie but I'm not going to get all feminist about it. Rather, what always bothered me about it is that it had nothing to do with love; it was just sex. Yes, yes, they ended up falling in love but they had absolutely nothing in common with each other. And what happens afterwards when they start meeting each other's friends and family? What if somebody recognises her from her profession? How does a respectable businessman maintain his standing with a former prostitute as his romantic partner?! Rom coms can be fun but not this one.

Yeah all these movies and, honestly, I expect any movie on the Hallmark channel. I saw an ad for a movie on that channel one time where a guy randomly grabs some woman who he doesn't know in an elevator and kisses her. Then, she was so excited that he is taking her on a date. I'm pretty sure that's called assault!
Snow white: Yes, perfectly fine for a 14 year old to be in the woods around strange tiny people with behavioural issues. And very normal for a 30 something year old man to come along, see a dead body, and decide to kiss it.
Also, movies or shows that has a main character doing everything great without recognising his/her faults.

Um, realistically, most of these movies are trying to give any message, they're just trying to entertain. I feel sorry for people trying to take messages of life from movies
I watch movies & shows for entertainment, not for life direction or advice. I know real ducks don't come back to life after being killed, nor do people (though, no horror movies actually made this ridiculous list). I know groups don't break out in song, especially in high school; I know superheroes are not real; and I know there is no "happily ever after". If you don't know all these things, you've got bigger problems than Wonder Woman's wardrobe or the fictional social ramifications of awakening three dead witches.
I fell there should be some movies like Limitless or Night crawler in this list. They teach you it's OK to resort to questionable actions when pursuing money and power.
I feel this is a little over-the-top. As Daria B said - not everything is meant to teach a lesson. Sure, if something becomes a TROPE, as in: is used over and over for a certain type of movie, that can become a problem. There's many movies with questionable morals, and I'm glad that the perception is changing towards a more tolerant and open and less sexist society. But if you as a parent want your kids to not take up one of the tropes, it's on you to set the movies you're watching in perspective. Talk with them! Let them talk about it with you. Let them watch different movies with different morals, so they can make up their own mind about things. There's so many amazing movies, you just need to look better.
I HATE ANY super hero film. Makes people (especially kids) think someone else will show up and fix their problems. They quit thinking for themselves, stand around as victims. This also goes for attributing fabulous man-made structures or nature-made wonders to aliens. Mankind has been intelligent and problem solving all through time. Don't see your species short!

So much messed up thing movies show us: You only have value as long as you are with someone, if you aknowledged something bad you have to tell everyine right away or it means you don't trust them, "I just wanted to protect you", your partner screws up big time but a romantic gesture will wipe that out, 'no' means 'maybe, try harder', being lonely is not ok. Some script writers should stop writing.

Hi, I personally love seeing interesting characters, it's a fiction - artists might as well use their creativity and explore the rabbit holes their mind goes into without taking these things into physical reality (unless someone gets inspired by them), it also helps viewers understand that they are not a weirdo for having similar thoughts. Completely avoiding these films because of that would be like avoiding violent video games.

I might get schooled and downvoted for this, but - no, I'm not going to defend any of these films, I dislike most of these tropes just as much as everyone else - I just think we should change our approach to how we see the entertainment industry. It's entertainment, not documentary. We shouldn't expect a work of fiction to teach us anything. If it does teach something good, besides being entertaining, that's wonderful, but not every film is there to teach anything. So many nice films have been ruined by this approach because people taught it "was teaching a bad lesson", while really, no, the film was just supposed to make you reflect upon what you just saw, possibly making you create your own new thoughts. And, before you school me on how sensitive is the youth, I was always taught that fiction is no reality and thus need not be emulated in real life. Heck, there are things that are funny BECAUSE you wouldn't do them in real life.
So, yes, please, change the cliché tropes, but let's not get all self-righteous about it. End of my Ted Talk. *bows*

I get it, some movies teach the wrong things and not very realistic. But one if the kid in the cartoon is a whinny f**k stop letting your kids watch it, and two unless its a documentary watch it for entertainment purposes only, who the hell looks for life lessons in a movie anyways.

I was never a fan of movies where main protagonist, no matter man or woman, no matter how good looking they are, just forcefully kisses someone they like without asking, just assuming they are irresistible because they are soooo good looking. Even when it's a woman who plays "femme fatale" and just jumps on some poor schmuck and we are supposed to think it's sexy? Or man who is like "ruggedly handsome" and grabs a woman and kisses her. It's not ok. Ask first, ask on a date, flirt at least to see if the other side is interested.
And another thing.....if you work hard enough you can attain your dreams. Sorry but no. Look at the ratios - the number of people who actually hit the big time vs the number who start out, particularly in the creative arts. Sure, work hard at your talent, but have a fall back as chances are that without a little bit of luck and a whole lot of support and money behind you, it won't be happening.
another bad lesson: in the Ryan O'Neal movie "Love Story" (1970), the bottom line message is "Love means you never have to say you are sorry". Nope, hate to tell you, but the author missed it... If you love someone & want to continue in a long-term relationship, you will have to say that you are sorry more than quite a few times... The relationship will have to be regularly renegotiated with growth and progress, commitment, and recommitments, or it will fail. What sort of charmed life did the author base this nonsense on? Nonsense!! Maybe he stopped saying "sorry" because he knew she was under a death sentence since leukemia was untreatable back then.

Crank - it's okay to r*pe your own girlfriend out on the streets for everyone to see while they cheer and hoot because who cares about her it's about the male protagonist and she will eventually start to like it anyway. Any film that tells you to Be Yourself (I'm looking at you Disney). Yes, lots of us need to get a lot better at accepting the good in us, but not one of us doesn't have things we need to work on as well. Myself is a grumpy, short-tempered cow when at home with my family, for their sake, I need to work on the reasons for that and exercise some self-discipline while I'm a wip.
Many of the "classic" movies from the so-called golden age of Hollywood are pretty problematic as well. "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" in particular.

I guess every Woody Allen movie is a bit sexist (I haven't watched them all), but last was You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger: a middle aged man stalks his young neighbour, persuaded her to get lunch together after several no's, tells her he's been stalking and enjoys watching her naked, and asks her to give him more shows of that (even after he finds out she's engaged and getting married soon). This is already unacceptable, but the worst part is that they actually end up together!
The Pokémon movies teach us that they're not canon, and TV Ash doesn't know the awesome adventures Movie Ash has had.
The Lion King: If you see meerkats and/or warthogs in real life, you should not approach them. They can't talk, sing or make funny jokes. You can't become friends with them. They should best be left alone in their natural habitat. It's a bloody f*cking outrage what Disney made me believe when I was only 12 years old.

Rather, what always bothered me about it is that it had nothing to do with love; it was just sex. Yes, yes, they ended up falling in love but they had absolutely nothing in common with each other. And what happens afterwards when they start meeting each other's friends and family? What if somebody recognises her from her profession? How does a respectable businessman maintain his standing with a former prostitute as his romantic partner?! Rom coms can be fun but not this one.

Yeah all these movies and, honestly, I expect any movie on the Hallmark channel. I saw an ad for a movie on that channel one time where a guy randomly grabs some woman who he doesn't know in an elevator and kisses her. Then, she was so excited that he is taking her on a date. I'm pretty sure that's called assault!
Snow white: Yes, perfectly fine for a 14 year old to be in the woods around strange tiny people with behavioural issues. And very normal for a 30 something year old man to come along, see a dead body, and decide to kiss it.
Also, movies or shows that has a main character doing everything great without recognising his/her faults.

Um, realistically, most of these movies are trying to give any message, they're just trying to entertain. I feel sorry for people trying to take messages of life from movies
I watch movies & shows for entertainment, not for life direction or advice. I know real ducks don't come back to life after being killed, nor do people (though, no horror movies actually made this ridiculous list). I know groups don't break out in song, especially in high school; I know superheroes are not real; and I know there is no "happily ever after". If you don't know all these things, you've got bigger problems than Wonder Woman's wardrobe or the fictional social ramifications of awakening three dead witches.
I fell there should be some movies like Limitless or Night crawler in this list. They teach you it's OK to resort to questionable actions when pursuing money and power.
I feel this is a little over-the-top. As Daria B said - not everything is meant to teach a lesson. Sure, if something becomes a TROPE, as in: is used over and over for a certain type of movie, that can become a problem. There's many movies with questionable morals, and I'm glad that the perception is changing towards a more tolerant and open and less sexist society. But if you as a parent want your kids to not take up one of the tropes, it's on you to set the movies you're watching in perspective. Talk with them! Let them talk about it with you. Let them watch different movies with different morals, so they can make up their own mind about things. There's so many amazing movies, you just need to look better.
I HATE ANY super hero film. Makes people (especially kids) think someone else will show up and fix their problems. They quit thinking for themselves, stand around as victims. This also goes for attributing fabulous man-made structures or nature-made wonders to aliens. Mankind has been intelligent and problem solving all through time. Don't see your species short!
Well, I thought especially Iron Man was pretty well-done in that he's NOT someone with super-powers. He's 'just' really smart and a total nerd. No special powers, just a man in a suit of armor.
