People In This Group Are Sharing Home Design Fails That Make You Feel Better About Your Own Home (50 Pics)
Decorating your home can be a fun experience. You can enhance its strengths, hide its weaknesses, and make it a reflection of yourself. Or you can put the toilet in the kitchen, transform the pool into a flower pot and call it a day. It's your choice. Just don't be surprised if photos of your chateau end up on the internet and people laugh their heads off.
The subreddit "Housing Manure" (sorry for butchering the name but I have to paraphrase) is a place where Redditors have been gathering to do just that. Sharing the worst design, construction, and living conditions, they've successfully proven time and time again that, for better or worse, human creativity knows no limits.

Similar to fashion, interior trends come and go, but true style is forever. Ideas often move in cycles, often reactionarily to external influences like social change and technology. To know which trends are currently in, I contacted interior architect and lecturer of interior design at Vilnius College of Design, Judita Striukienė.
"I think nowadays eclectic solutions are on the rise; it's really popular to combine different interior design styles," Striukienė told Bored Panda. "In fact, it's quite rare to discover a place that is true to just one school. When you say a home was designed according to a certain style, you usually mean that some elements have an advantage in that place over the others or there is some sort of leitmotif throughout the entire space."
"These elements are often dictated by the urban surroundings or the owner's wants and desires, including their hobbies, favorite furniture, the art that they own, and so on."

Some aspects of interior design, however, are more universal than others. "First and foremost, spaces have to be functional. Everything else is more or less decor, creating a certain mood," Judita Striukienė said. "Only after a designer makes the apartment or house serve the owner's lifestyle and everyday life can they start working on other things like eliminating the flaws of that particular place."
After these crucial steps, interior designers usually move to more subjective matters.
This Is Abysmal
This Monstrosity
As you can see from the pictures, there are plenty of ways to mess up the look of your home. But Judita Striukienė said it's not just the visual aesthetic that's at stake.
"Firstly, we have to mention technical mistakes—unnecessary interventions into the structure of the building. People make them due to a lack of knowledge and/or overestimating their abilities. Because of that, some real estate developers are now providing buyers with detailed lists of what they can and cannot touch."
The interior architect recalled a time when a person damaged the construction of the entire facade just because they wanted a niche in their shower!
My Eyes Hurt
Sorry but the market isn't mature yet for a stained kitchen which would never look clean
This is an ADHD dream kitchen tbh, lol, it's never clean anyway.
Load More Replies...Love it! No matter how hideous this house is, I'd buy it just for the kitchen!
The market doesn't want a kitchen that looks like a giant squid blew up in it.
Also, if you spent $15 000 on this, you need to ask for a refund of about $12 000.
I'm hoping that number includes brand-new, top-of-the-line appliances.
Load More Replies...You know with the purple it would be very popular in the 80's! But nowadays yeah they need to change the colour
Load More Replies...Yes...I love that shade of purple but I don't want my whole bloody kitchen looking like that.
Load More Replies...I like the idea of the purple marble...not the execution, the idea.
Just change the cabinet color to say, grey or black, and it will be fine.
This if from a new reality TV show "Barney's Nightmare Kitchen Makeover"
This is not a fail, it's a matter of preference. It's not for me, but if you love purple this is great.
I personally like it. The problem is this is a really niche idea that not everyone is going to like.
Well as it looks like the purple vomit fairy has paid you several visits, I think you might be waiting a little longer. I mean there must be at least one other person in the world with a similar lack of taste, surely.
Ordinary Robert T. lacks curiosity, creativity, cultivation, cleverness, imagination, originality, celebratory spirit.
Load More Replies...Personally I love purple and marble, I would freaken love this tacky a*s kitchen. But, you know that’s a personal choice. Not a flip choice
Not a fan of the purple, but I do like the idea of colorful cabinets. Try orange or olive green!
What the f*ck were you thinking? Maybe if Prince were still alive ...
What sane person would create a purple kitchen and expect it to be a decor highlight?
I love the colours - but there needs to be more room between the counter and the overhead cupboards.
I love this. What is not to love? Why do most folks strive for mediocre, for neutral, for boring?Purple has been my favorite color since I was a little girl.My hair has been purple almost all of my adult life and some of my teenage years. I truly do not understand people. I think most people look boring and have no sense of adventure or style. Are there no artists anymore? Why would anyone not adore this? I am starting to think I don't belong in this dull and dreary world most people seem to want. PS did you know there is a store called The Purple Store? t IS possible to find purple furnishings but i prefer to find things by happenstance, they tend to be more affordable that way.....
I LOVE this! Purple is my favorite color! What is not to love here?My hair has been purple for all of my adult life! Am I missing something? There IS a store called The Purple Store.I thnk most folks have a boring style sense if this is somehow undesireable......
The marble floor is swimmingly. For those who bathe a lot, strolling into kitchen afterwards keeps your mind smooth & at peace [water does that; why people live on shores]. Kaleidoscopic...Are the top cabinets magenta & bottom ones purple & the one(s) on the left lavender? The side of cabinet [next to window] is a different shade. [A riot of colors or the fotog's lighting?] Too much Technicolor motif for my apt kitchenette but I'd like to visit [often] the creative, cultivated, clever, imaginative person w/a curiosity & originality in her/his spirit. I'm guessing "her."
Never use Barney the Purple Dinosaur as a color choice in your kitchen.
Excuse my language, but that's just bl***y awful. If I was house-hunting and I saw that, I would just exit as fast as possible.
I like the color of the cabinets and stuff, but the floors and countertops are just no
I sent this picture to my friend telling her this is what her kitchen would look like. She was mad at me.
See I would actually love that if the floor and countertops were just white
I mean, it's pretty. I wouldn't buy it, but it's still pretty lol
i rlly don’t get why it’s bad 😂 if the cabinets were a lighter purple, i’d buy the whole house!
You should find out if a niche exists before building for it. In the case there is only one person in the purple kitchen niche.
It's just TOO purple. And don't get me wrong, I love purple! But between the way-too-much purple and the weird disturbing floor, this is a seriously not-good kitchen.
Hey, kids! I love you. You love me. Here’s a kitchen that’s really ugly. (Unless purple is your jam.)
Maybe the floor covering makes them sightly dizzy? :+} or the fact there is NO dishwasher???
I love purple, but if I was designing something for a flip, I'm going to choose neutral tones that will compliment other people's tastes. Pops of color should be saved for staging, maybe a front door if there's no HOA. And were these new wood, or wood appearing, cabinets that she painted? Aside from the ridiculous amount of work, could they even be stripped? I rent a condo that someone did a horrid job of painting and adding "trim" to cheap particle board cabinets- they stripped the laminate from the front of the doors.. Terrible execution. Better to save bold, creative, diy ideas for your own space, not one for others
I love the floor, but it would look better in a bathroom. The matching countertops are too much. And the purple cabinets are just…no. The glossy finish is especially bad.
Honestly, I don't hate it. I wouldn't do it on purpose but I'd live with it okay.
I actually don’t hate the cabinets or the concept of the purple marble, but the execution is horrible.
Buy the all new Purple kitchen- the only kitchen to include a Purple grid!
It's ready for sexy time in the kitchen! Is there a mirror on the ceiling?
Cripes! You mass murder thousands of grapes, then drag their corpses around your kitchen, and you don’t even bother to clean up after? You slob.
Paint the cabinets - I suggest a nice charcoal gray - and you might have something that'll sell.
Honestly, with a soapstone countertop and a darker grey laminate floor, and white ceramic hardware, it wouldn’t be too bad.
Purple is my favorite color but just no. Maybe if it was a darker shade and not so neon.
Paint the cabinets white and will sell. Even with that floor and countertop.
I like it but if you're trying to flip a house you don't put in features that are going to apply to only a very small percentage of your potential buyers.
I personally love the purple cabinets, the floor not so much. I think its awesome when people make bold decorating choices for their own homes they intend to live in for a long time. Everyone should paint their home in a way that makes them happy But.. But how does someone flipping a house not understand that they need to be presenting a neutral canvas to potential buyers to decorate to their own tastes? Really? What were they thinking? And did no one try to talk them out of it?
Purple is my favorite color, but even I am offended by those cabinets.
At first I thought the purple on the counters and floor were a mess left by painters who did the cabinets. But then I realized it was done on purpose. I'm not sure which is worse.
Not a fan of the floor, but I actually like that the cabinets are purple and not something boring like white, grey, or, god forbid, beige.
Paint cabinets a lighter colour, replace disastrous floor....I know, it cost money.
The floor looks like a toddler ran through it carrying am open bottle of detergent.
Y'know, if the cabinets had been black or charcoal grey, it might have worked.
Not a lot of people want to buy a house with a kitchen that they'll have to rip out and replace before they can move in.
Ooh, I made this in Sims 4 once! An all-purple house. It burned down...
People who buy houses are not looking at buying a new kitchen straight away because garish and gaudy only works on TV when the producers agree (off camera) to rip it out and fix it before the sale.
I hate flippers. The whole point is to make a profit by increasing the perceived value by spending as little as possible on the work, and it usually shows. It might not be obvious in photos (though you can still usually see it there too), but living in it will reveal what corners were cut. But shite like this... I can only assume this house flipper is a crazy person.
I hate everything about this kitchen except the placement of the appliances. Marble is pourous and dissolvable. It stains and is impossible to sterilize, plus you're supposed to use special cleaning products just so you don't damage it. Stone counter tops also usually have patterns that make it really difficult to see crumbs or grime that need to be cleaned. Contrast this all with an unusual color choice, and it's not going to appeal to most people. Real estate usually comes in neutral tones to give people a basic idea of the space without implying individual taste, allowing them to visualize it however they want. It's also usually not painted in dark colors that are going to be difficult to cover without a base primer and multiple coats.
Then there are the financial mistakes. "How often people miscalculate can vary from culture to culture, but a huge investment into a property (one that will not pay off when selling it) can hurt quite a lot. For example, you can spend a small fortune on altering the floor plan but it might not add any value or, even worse, future buyers might find the changes irrational."
Judita said other common mistakes occur in the kitchen and bathroom; places where you really need to know the materials. The good thing here is that the answers are usually clear-cut and known to most industry experts.
But something tells me even they couldn't have saved some of these homes from their owners.

Some are funny but some are clearly solutions for issues people might have. Like for example limited space
I feel like many on these are just making fun of poor people for trying to make do
No, it’s condemning greedy landlords who cram more and more people into smaller and less reasonable spaces.
Load More Replies...I'm not European, but there are plenty here to correct me. But I'm guessing that many of these are homes built before indoor bathrooms became considered necessities... so toilets were added to wherever there were plumbing lines... which often meant kitchens? (European in my kitchen???)
Central European here: sometimes only a room with a sink is for sale (no toilet). Like it used to be a room for the cleaning lady or a part of another appartment. Or the room for washing (back when you had to "cook" your laundry in a special stove). These rooms are sometimes sold separately and the new owner tries his best to make something useful. Not allways successfully. But the older buildings (before 1900) often had separate toilets for several appartments in the hall or the staircase. When people renovate, some make bad decisions.
