We’ve all had that very worst day combo. 3 hours of sleep combined with a car that won't start, add piles of work sitting on your desk and a call from tax inspection (add your scenario here) and voila, your day has just turned into a nightmare. Call them first world problems, but whoever has been there knows very well just how much it takes to cool off your boiling blood.

Luckily, there’s one band-aid known to humanity that eases this pain. And it’s knowing that someone out there is going through a wayyy worse day. Like, worse². Both vile and soothing, we present you with Bored Panda’s compilation of the most severe day-breaking fails that are impossible not to laugh at.

For those who are dealing with even more severe worst day situations, please get an extra dose of others’ misfortune on our previous posts here, here, and here. And remember that at its worst, a bad day can only last up to 24 hours.

It’s crazy how much some unlucky incidents and totally random things can change the course of our day. In reality, every one of us can go from joyful to plain wrecked in a moment for countless reasons. Spilling your takeaway coffee on a blouse is one, getting a call you didn’t expect is another, and the list goes on.

Bored Panda reached out to Amy Morin, a psychotherapist and author of the book “13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do,” to find out more about why such random things like spilled coffee can be an instant day-breaker. Amy explained that it all has to do with us letting negative thoughts in.

“When you believe things like the world is unfair or nothing in your life ever goes right, you experience upsetting feelings.” It’s especially true “when something doesn't work out the way you hoped.”

If anything the warm enclosed space would make it work better, especially if the metal dumpster is in the sun.

But what if we teach ourselves to become immune to both small and large misfortunes? Amy suggests that we can, in fact, train positive thinking. “When you notice unhelpful thoughts like, 'This is awful,' or 'Nothing ever goes right,' respond to the thoughts in a more productive way.”

This is the essential point when you can still save your day from breaking. This is why you should try to reframe the sudden negative thoughts into something more realistic. “For example, if you're thinking it's unfair that you have to wait for traffic, remind yourself, 'There are millions of cars on the road. Traffic jams are bound to happen. I'll be OK,'" Amy suggested.

Of course, there are people with a personality that makes it easier for them to be positive, but it doesn’t mean all the others should stay in misery. “Everyone can develop a healthier, more realistic mindset,” Amy urges.

“You can train your brain to look for the good in the world and develop the mental strength you need to perform and feel your best.” Start from small steps like reframing negative thoughts into realistic facts, and grow your positive thinking into a habit.

Accepting things for what they are and not for how they make you feel can be truly therapeutic. In this way, you no longer blame yourself for something as ridiculous as spilled coffee and the day, it keeps on shining.

This reminds me of the year when we all gathered at my grandma's for Christmas. The first day the kids came running telling us there was a "river" running from one of a wall in the basement. Most of us thought they were playing, but grandpa went to have a look. A pipe had frozen and the basement was filling up. He had to turn off the water. Chrismas, 19 persons and no water. Could it get any worse? Of course, it can. A storm with heavy snow passed that night and the whole area lost electricity as well as phone contact. The roads where blocked and we could not leave until two days later.

I had to do these tests when I was a kid, and that's the reason to why I absolutely refused to have them done as an adult a few months ago. It's possible now days to test a blood sample which is much much better! Putting an allergic child through these tests is torture, trust me.

I think the worst part about those scratch tests is the number of false positives. If you are exposed to a large number of allergens, you're going to react to more of them than you would if you encountered them individually.

When my oldest was 3, he had the same test, and reacted even worse than that. He was literally crying, and after the measurements were taken, I asked if the allergist would give him some Benadryl. She looked at me funny and asked why he needed it. I promised him he would never take him back to that allergist again. The new allergist told us we could have just done a simple blood test. We took our younger child directly to the new allergist.

Had to have the same thing done with my son. We moved to Tennessee from Arizona. Arizona doesn't have many plants that produce pollen so the pollen count is always nearly nonexistant. However, the opposite is true of Tennessee. He suffered so much. Took him to an allergist and he too reacted to virtually everything they tested him with. I felt so bad for him.

I had this reaction all over me before I even got the test. I had a headache and wasn't allowed to take my allergy meds for two weeks prior to the test. Record reads "Patient presents symptoms in the waiting room". Turns out the one thing I could take before the test was Motrin (which I told them). So I was sent home without a test or any idea what was the culprit. Took motrin once more two weeks later, my face swelled up, body laced with hives like this, and stopped breathing. I was allergic to the motrin.

I had the old scratch test done 38 years ago. My entire back was covered with red wheals like that. The allergist said I was the worst patient he'd ever seen. He called in all his partners and nurses to look at my back. Then the nurse spent the next 30 minutes fanning my back and soothing it with isopropyl alcohol. Totally worth it. The allergy shots they made up for me gave me my life back!

This is only tangentially related, but it might be therapeutic to tell anyway. So some years back I got suddenly very sick, throwing up, couldn't even hold water down, we were worried about dehydration so I went to ER. I started turning blue on the way there. Turns out my kidneys had shut down. Cause or effect nobody knows for sure, but it was a scary time. 19 days in hospital, lots of dialysis, and if I hadn't gone in when I did then I might have died. My nephrologist's best guess was a penicillin allergy. He tells me I should avoid all beta-lactam antiobiotics for life, just in case. After a while I think maybe I should get tested because I'd feel better knowing what almost killed me - and if it wasn't penicillin, maybe I can find out what it was. But, it's too risky for the pin prick test. (con't)

parmeisan avatar
Parmeisan
Community Member
3 years ago DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Then I found out you can test blood! Got sent to a specialist. Her opinion: even if the penicillin that caused the problem it was unlikely to be an actual allergy. I was probably one of the "1 in X thousand adverse reaction" you see in the notes for every medication. No way to know if it would happen again, no way to test for it, keep telling doctors it's an allergy because they won't take it seriously otherwise. (Hint: They still don't take it seriously, I've had 2 pharmacists tell me that a doctor prescribed a beta lactam despite my telling them I can't have one. Thank god for pharmacists.) So anyway, I'll never know for sure. Just gotta live my life with that big unknown hanging over my head.

It's more likely that you're allergic to a few things, but also have dermatographism, which can cause reactions based on the touch of the testing alone.

Why would they use your back? The last time I had a series of tests like this, they used my forearms. I had a particularly nasty reaction to one item, but the dermatologist applied some kind of ointment that cleared it right up.

The back is a bigger surface area so the allergy prick test is a bit more clearer also it is harder to scratch the irritations on your back than it is to scratch them on your arm which can make the hives/rash worse and spread more.
