Mom groups can be wonderful. Their members share in-the-field experiences and valuable insights, and don't mind having entire conversations with newbies on how to get a fussy baby back to sleep or how to potty train a toddler.

But the good stuff is often surrounded by the bad. Every now and then, there's a post judging vaccines or a comment suggesting Ethanol as a boy's name. In fact, such content is so frequent, it even gave rise to a subreddit making fun of it.

It's called '[Stuff] Mom Groups Say' and vigilant Bored Panda readers may remember it from our earlier article but here's part 2 for those who can't get enough of it. That includes us!

Talya Stone, a former editor-in-chief turned parenting blogger and the woman behind Motherhood: The Real Deal and 40 Now What told Bored Panda that online mom groups are definitely hit or miss. "A lot of them can be a hotbed for toxicity and riling each other up," she said.

"I think with all social media platforms and forums it's about taking everything with a pinch of salt and not getting sucked in too deep. Some, however, can be great for advice when you have a specific query."

Stone suggests treating mom groups like buying a house: "Go and visit the neighbourhood (group) and get a sense of if you like it. Evaluate if you honestly like the energy and vibe, see what kind of conversations are happening there and if you like it — great! If not, move on to the next neighbourhood and find one you feel more comfortable with."

At the end of the day, Stone believes that nothing can replace a face-to-face connection and that goes for moms too. "The pandemic has made this really difficult but now is the time to start rebuilding," she said.

"Strike up a conversation at the school gate, park, or coffee shop. We have become so scared of real-life interactions but we need to move on and start forming those connections again — online things can quickly become very distorted."

Vicki Broadbent, a writer, director, broadcaster, and founder of the parenting blog Honest Mum, told Bored Panda that "mom groups, be it Whatsapp groups with the nursery/schools moms or via social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram can provide critical support for parents."

"I remember the support, friendship, and camaraderie I garnered from Twitter when I had my first child, Oliver, and how that allowed me to connect with like-minded parents easily and usually during unsociable hours when I was nursing in the night too. It was amazing."

She also reminded that sometimes we simply aren't able to get together in person. "The pandemic has highlighted how important online support can be for parents where face-to-face access has been limited. You can find all sorts of parenting groups on Facebook for all kinds of needs (from breastfeeding groups to fitness, those with specific medical conditions, and more) so I'd recommend searching there, and joining some, feeling your way through different ones in a bid to find your tribe!" Broadbent said, adding that you can also check out some apps whose job is to connect you to nearby parents in your area for online and real-life meet-ups that can be of huge help as well.

Why not? I put cereal in my kids' bottles kept them fuller for longer. They slept through the night. Let me be clear, by saying baby cereal not like fruit loops.

Lots of people do it, but every expert recommends against it. Cereal in bottle is very outdated advice.

I'm preeeeeety sure when these people say cereal they mean the baby flakes (that look like boxed mashed potatoes) not Lucky Charms. That said, you shouldn't be using cereals in your babies milk "to help them sleep longer" because cereals are a filler/empty calories, they don't provide the nutrients that milk provides for brain development and growth. Cereals are for when the baby is learning to eat solids.

In most cases doctors advise against it BUT in some cases it is ok. My daughter had to start having a little cereal added at four months because of stomach issues and this was under a doctors care.

Yea I did not mean for that to happen. And I personally love the personal attacks on me and my kids. Whom are exceptionally healthy and never "over fed" they never were over weight or anything. My grandmother actually recommended it (old wives tale thing) I checked with the pediatrician and he gave the green light and I bought the special bottle for it as well. Everything was fine. I understand each child is different but mine were just fine.

Very soggy cereal or watery oatmeal is great for a baby getting ready for solid food. There's literally bottles for this exact thing. Thought this was normal...

This WAS normal. It has been very much discouraged in recent years. Cereal is largely empty calories that replaces the more nutrient dense Formula or breastmilk.

I don't think this belongs here. In spite the fact that there are many reasons for not putting cereal in a baby bottle (too young child, sugary cereal bad for teeth...), there are also legitimate reasons to do so. We don't know her and her specific situation. Maybe she does so on pediatrician orders, to prevent reflux or whatever and she's just sick of people telling her she's not a good mother for doing what a doctor is telling her to do.

For any one who doesn’t know, it’s referring to rice cereal, not like lucky charms. The rice cereal is in delicate flakes that almost completely dissolve, it just thickens the formula a little. My son was about 2 months old and eating SO MUCH that the doctor recommended rice cereal to keep him full through the night, and it works. And yes, you add it to the bottle because they can’t use a spoon yet! (You can make it as thick or as thin as you need. Porridge like)

The main reason I know for putting cereal in bottles is with a baby that has reflux. The thought is it's thicker and heavier and less likely to come back up.

sugar, if sitting overnight, will rot teeth. I have heard (at baby sibiling's doctor appointments) that milk is not even recommended for a bedtime snack. I'm not saying you're using sugary cereal, just something to know :)

If your baby is having cereal then they should be old enough to start eating more solid foods, The problem with cereal in bottles is that it sometimes clogs the hole, nothing more, nothing less. Bubs doesn't have a problem other than he or she is a growing baby.

When cereal is added to bottle, it makes the baby's appetite larger leading to childhood obesity. Obese children are at risk for diabetes, high blood pressure

You know what? This debate has been as changeable as the wind for decades. When I was in my 20's and friends were having their babies, they started saying no solid food for a year. Then when I had mine, at 40, it was no solid food for 6 months. Then throw in, don't feed this, or don't feed that, for whatever period was popular at the time. My pediatrician advised that I give mine cereal in their bottle around 6 months, and within a month told me to start feeding it to them. Mine were small and thin because they were twins, and it took nearly a year for them to catch up. The bottom line is ask your pediatrician. And if you're concerned, ask questions.
