This should be illegal and come with a hefty fine for the producer, the shop, and the customer. All amounts of money collected could then go to fund research about how to store greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere. This madness needs to meet a wall of refusal to cooperate! Vote with your money - do not buy it if the packaging is excessive.
Unfortunately this is a legal requirement in many countries for food safety reasons.

Not for a second do I support this, but there is a foundation to this - the banana will ripen slower (last longer) when sealed up like that. Still an abhorrent waste.
I wish to disagree John. In my experience putting fruit/veg in any kind of bag will ripen it much faster. When soft fruit season comes around (peaches, pears, plums etc) many stores provide bags just so the fruit will ripen quicker. But I agree 1000% that unnecessary packing in abhorrent waste.

In my county bananas are sold without a plastic wrap. But "reasonable" customers carefully put them in a little plastic bag when they buy them. WHY!? *facepalm

Naah, the pinnacle would be to peel the banana and put it unpeeled in the plastic. Saw it happens with other fruits and plastic containers....
If only... This would save my life. The last time I went to a grocery store 3 years ago, I went into anaphylactic shock, which triggered my asthma and a whole host of other health problems... I have a type one airborne banana allergy.
