Guests Shocked After Guy Bakes Perfectly Gray Gender Reveal Cake For Pregnant Sister
You can’t argue with the fact that gender reveal parties have gotten a little out of control since they first showed up. Expecting couples just seem to be coming up with more and more elaborate ways to tell the world whether they’re having a boy or a girl.
One pregnant woman asked her part-time baker bro to whip up a gender reveal cake but was stupefied when the final product was as grey as a concrete floor. Now the guy is asking a community of netizens if whipping up the genderless gateau was a jerk move.

With criticism coming in hot from both his mother and sister, the guy is now asking netizens whether or not baking a neutral cake was a jerk move
OP, a 23-year-old hobby baker who’s good enough to get paid for wedding cakes, was asked to make a gender reveal cake by his pregnant sister. Simple enough, right? Until she said she wanted to be surprised too. No problem, she promised someone else would email him the gender details.
The day of the reveal crept closer, and still, radio silence. So, doing the only logical thing he could think of, OP whipped up the most neutral cake imaginable. Grey inside. Grey outside. Decorated with fondant clouds. “Cement-core chic,” if you will. It tasted great but looked like a pastry-themed overcast afternoon.
At the party, OP’s sister sliced into the cake and immediately looked furious. Her husband? Baffled. Guests? Murmuring. OP’s sister pulled him aside, accusing him of being “passive-aggressive”, but he calmly reminded her he never got the gender. No pink. No blue. No data. What was he supposed to do? Channel the baby’s energy?
Now OP’s mom is claiming he humiliated the whole family. Honestly, though, what more could he have done? He even followed up before the party and got a casual “someone’s handling it.” In the end, the communication was a bigger flop than the concrete-like concoction, but OP is still asking an online community if he’s a jerk.

From what OP tells us in his post, his pregnant sister’s gender reveal party wasn’t all that elaborate, which lowkey suggests planning is not her strong suit. When did gender reveal parties become such a big deal, though? And just how sophisticated are they getting these days? We went looking for answers.
According to The Guardian, back in 2008, blogger Jenna Karvunidis whipped up a simple pink‑filled cake, unintentionally sparking a phenomenon. Word spread fast when she blogged about her reveal and, by 2011, gender reveal parties were trending worldwide, fueled by viral YouTube videos and spreading across Pinterest and Instagram.
Today’s gender reveals have gone way beyond backyard gatherings. Think smoke bombs, confetti cannons, fireworks, and even parachuting parents. Social media and event planners have turned them into cinematic spectacles, but with extravagance comes danger. According to Prospect Magazine, past stunts triggered wildfires, plane crashes, and other disasters.
With that in mind, OP’s sister should probably be glad the only thing that went badly was the cake. Perhaps it’ll act as a powerful reminder when it comes to planning her next social event.
What would you have done if you’d been in OP’s shoes? Do you think baking a grey cake was a jerk move, or does the blame sit squarely with his happy-go-lucky sister? Share your thoughts in the comments!
In the comments, readers seemed to agree that the original poster was a jerk, but also laid the blame on his sister for being so lackadaisical

Honestly, I think it’s hilarious. “Gender reveals” are pretty dumb, anyway.

Load More Replies...The sister in the story kind of makes me wish Nature had provided some kind of stupidity impediment to reproductive success in the human animal.
Maybe an unpopular opinion - serves the sister right. How TF are you meant to make a gender reveal cake when you don’t know the gender? Sis is all “but I emailed you~”? Onus is on her to ensure that OP actually got that email, not the other way around. And given she made no financial contribution towards it, she can have her grey cake and eat it, too.
Reminds me of grey Wedgwood, which I love. (BP acknowledges this image was generated by AI.)
Load More Replies...I have to wonder if he's had these sorts of issues with his sister before. I mean the lack of need to know information for events. If so, I completely get the gray cake. If not, if this was simply a pregnancy brain issue and she's usually on top of things, then he should have done standard colors baby shower cake that was gender neutral. And told his sister before the cutting that's what he did.
Pretty demanding for people who didn't *pay* for the cake. However, I do agree OP should have followed up with sis + asked, "WHO is telling me the gender cuz I still don't know? Tell them to tell *me* by x date; text, phone call, drop by to tell me in person, note on my windshield, something!"
The whole gender reveal thing is f*****g ridiculous anyway. Thanks America, for yet another fantastic contribution to world culture.
Right? Who TF cares what your c****h goblin is, besides *you* ?
Load More Replies...OP did the best he could with what information she gave him. Next time she might not be so blithe.
I disagree that he did the best he could do. Reaching out to his sister saying something like "I don't know the gender of the baby, so what would you like the cake to look like?" would have been a better option. Making the cake yellow, or white, or chocolate would have also been a better option, and less work than he put in the make it gray. He behaved like a petulant child.
Load More Replies...As someone for whom this cake was not for, this was absolutely hilarious. If ti were for me, I think I'd still find it funny but can understand why people were wondering why he couldn't just use yellow or whatever. Regardless, gender reveals are asinine and it's annoying they've become more popular after they were already popular until most people agreed they were cringe.
If I had the OP's baking and decorating skills I've have included a least one very cute and correctly flesh-toned but genderless baby's face half peeking from behind one of the clouds.👶
What a stupid notion. Why even have a cake if it has nothing to do with the reveal? Sister clearly doesn't have two brain cells to rub together
Because people like to eat something delicious at a gender reveal party? Cake is pretty standard for parties.
Load More Replies...These reveal parties are pretty much just for the mom. Guests sure as s**t don't care, and I dare say most of the time neither does the father.
A gender-neutral cake would have been fine. All white, pink & blue, yellow, baby theme, rainbow, whatever. I would have done one with a pull-out banner "Let's all be surprised together". That would have been funny, IMO. Deliberately making it all grey though...that was an a*****e move. Sad depressing concrete cake is passive aggressive and kind of a jerk move.
Gender reveals are stupid. What an ahole, passive aggressive thing to do. The sister was worthless, but still gray ffs? I make cakes for my grandbabies and purple on the inside would be so cute. I mean literally any color that's not gross like gray would have been fine.
The sister should have given a theme and colors. She should have sad ducks, yellow and green. No info so a grey cake it is..
Thins is, she couldn't provide the info because she didn't have it. Clearly someone else (at the obgyn office perhaps?) was supposed to pass the info and didn't. Had this been any other client OP would have messaged them around the baking time to let them know he didn't have the info. He didn't and choose instead to go with a s****y color. Sure, Mom to be should have been on it but honestly s****y move on ob's behalf.
The sister is definitely TA in this situation, but I am also side-eying OP because of his choice to make the gender-neutral cake gray of all colors. Like many have pointed out, that isn't neutral. He could've still made a bright, delicious cake instead of intentionally choosing an ugly motif he had to have known the sister would hate. A cute, "Welcome to the world, baby!" on a yellow or green cake would've been lovely. This makes them both look bad.
Ahahah i like this guy! This is the part of reddit that I love seeing pissed off! Any decent person would A take it as a joke at most and B be impressed with the craftsmanship. Cus well after all it is a gender reveal with no s*x known so... Unless the dude was supposed to develop some precognitive powers and transcend the realm of mankind... Everyone there should shove their "murmurs" up the a*s and enjoy the FREE CAKE!
Gender reveals are stupid. If you know what it is get either the boy or girl baby shower invites and save a butt load of wasted money on them that can be used for the baby. Not the brothers fault, he told her that he didn't have the info.
I would absolutely have done this. If I had been there I would have had to go outside to scream laughing (taking cake with obvs).
YTA, just make it green, or yellow or purple or white or red, or white with lots of colours, gold, or silver, or a combination of pink and blue. Anything that involves colors would have been fine. But making it grey, sounds like he actively tried to make it look horrible. So passive agressive.
I just hope no-one ever invites me to such an event, it might not be easy to tell them they're being moronic. I think this is ESH since he should ring up before time, tell them that he can't make the cake without info, and then not make it if he doesn't get the info. It seems rather odd that she wouldn't tell him though - maybe this is fake.
Totally passive aggressive. Easy enough to send a message the day before and say "no one got me the information and I have to start baking, so I'm just going to make a cute baby cake."
