“Pray For Us Formula Moms”: Mom Shares Her Unpleasant Experience Of Going Through Formula Shortage In The US

The baby formula shortage has been scaring parents and caregivers for several months now. It all started with a contamination problem at an Abbott factory that produces multiple brands for the US market. Once Abbott decided to shut the manufacturing complex down due to contamination complaints linked to infant deaths, it left the American citizens in fear.

“Excuse my makeup-less crying face, this #formulashortage is so scary” – a mom of two took it to TikTok to reveal how the infant formula shortage affects the country and children with food hypersensitivities. The video received over 1.4 million views, 89.2K likes and 9697 worth of comments discussing the ongoing crisis.

The baby formula shortage that has been overtaking the US since March has caused plenty of distress to moms and dads. Parents are unable to locate the cans at any grocery stores and are changing their shipping location on Amazon just to buy an extremely overpriced product from Canada. Mothers are resorting to DIY methods and diluting the formulas to stretch them out for a little bit longer, though it’s been recently recognized as risky as it could lead to emergency health issues.

TikTok mom of 2 speaks out about the scary reality behind baby formula shortage

The woman began her video by sharing that more people need to speak out about the current baby formula shortage and how it affects people’s lives. She mentioned that normally, you would expect to see heaps of baby formula at your local grocery store – however, when you go in now, the shelves are absolutely bare.

Moreover, there are children who cannot have generic formula due to their allergies. For instance, the author’s daughter has a cow milk protein allergy, and the most commonly used infant formulas contain purified cow’s milk.

When the child’s immune system responds abnormally to certain foods, it could lead to distressing and sometimes life-threatening symptoms. For example, cow’s milk protein allergy is one of the most common allergies that is found in 7 out of 100 babies. Though the allergy is not considered to be a lifelong threat as most children will grow out of it by their 6th birthday, it’s understandable why the formula shortage is leaving their parents panic-stricken, particularly for kids with food hypersensitivity.

The woman is confused and terrified, she said that even the pharmacist who fills her daughter’s prescription can’t fill it because they simply can’t get it. The formulas are back-ordered for six months and, unfortunately, there are barely any options left. Many mothers have turned to homemade formulas or they’ve started to water their bottles down to stretch the cans out, though, as mentioned above, the experts are extremely against it.

The woman showed what the shelves look like at grocery stores

Parents are practically hunting for formulas; mothers drive for hours, contacting their relatives and peers that live outside of their state just to test their luck and, perhaps, acquire a can or two. The majority of the stores don’t have anything in stock and if they do, the inventory is very limited. Some mothers are stepping up to help and donating their milk to those in need – however, there are also people who are taking advantage of the nationwide crisis and selling infant formula for a highly exaggerated price.

Moreover, it seems that a lot of people are undereducated about breastfeeding. Folks assume that mothers are always able to lactate, though that’s really not the case. Breastfeeding can be an extremely complicated process: for instance, there are women who suffer from IGT (insufficient glandular tissue), which can cause low or no milk production whatsoever. Besides, when a woman is no longer breastfeeding, rebuilding a milk supply is a very time-consuming process that, in most cases, is not successful.

I feel bad for the families, but Americans really do this to themselves. As part of their popular "Buy American" campaign, the US has imposed heavy tariffs and regulations on foreign manufacturers, essentially shutting them out of the market and leaving Americans heavily dependent on 2 or 3 domestic brands so that any interruption in the supply chain collapses the market. Some people will try to deny this, of course, but if the US allowed foreign competition then having ONE plant shut down wouldn't wipe out supply. This is a problem the USA created for itself.... like it or not.

The problem is reliance on a single manufacturer who violated FDA regulations and was shut down after babies died. Smaller manufacturers are doing what they can but they just don't have the capacity to fill the demand. Another factor is consumers lack of knowledge and overdependence on mass-produced formula. What did parents do in the days before baby formula? They found alternatives. My dad's mother could not breastfeed and like OP's baby, he was allergic to cow's milk. He could have goat's milk but that was hard to find. She found a farmer whose mare was nursing a foal. My dad could drink horse milk fine. Horses are difficult to milk but the farmer was willing to do it to save my dad's life.

Well in Cuba we did not have any baby formula...... We survived, babies are fed with a blend of creamed potato's, yam and other vegetables until they can eat solid food.

As a small baby my son thrived on goat's milk, as he was sensitive to cow's milk. Is it worth a try?

I wish I had a solution to the formula crisis. On the other hand, it should be illegal to pierce a baby's ears.

I read an article in Time magazine that besides the global supply lines affected by Covid and the war, the major distributor of formula (Abbott) had a several recalls on top of one plant closing. https://time.com/6175211/baby-formula-shortage/

There are no "global supply lines" for baby formula in the US. 98% of the domestic market is controlled by 3 American companies. The reason for the shortage isn't covid. It's because Abbott had a recall and there was no competitors to pick up the slack. This isn't a covid crisis. It's a US protectionism crisis.

There are several brands of goat's milk formula available in the USA. My daughter could not have cow's milk formula at all, she was extremely prem and her body could not tolerate the enzymes in cow's milk. Goat's milk formulas are amazing. I can think of Holle - Nanny Care - Kabrita - Designed by Nature - Sammy's and Mt. Capra brands, all available in the US. Blessings to all the mama's battling at the moment.

Some babies can only handle one brand of formula. You'd think they'd all be the same but they're not. My daughter was only able to handle Good Start and nothing else. I don't think goats milk would necessarily be the solution for all. But it's something to look into if someone's never heard of it.

Instead of gathering supplies from cities and towns that have a surplus, we're talking about UFO's. Two weeks to get the plant back up does nothing for the families who need it now.

Women were given breasts for one purpose only: to provide nutrition for babies, PLUS building the child's immune system, by the colostrum in human milk. So scrap formula, feed your babies naturally. I was a breast-fed baby, at 80 y.o. I still love milk, although it comes from a cow now!

We had this same problem between 2015-2019 but for a different reason. Chinese Nationals buying up all the formula to sell back home. It got so bad that stores started limiting the number of can per purchase. You’d have a huge line of Chinese people waiting for the supermarket to open and they’d run in rudely barging into other customers to grab cans and run outside to fill their trolley repeatedly. Since all the students couldn’t get back in the country during the pandemic the problem has stopped. Pure selfishness and greed. Mothers like this one couldn’t feed their babies because certain people were so self entitled, selfish and greedy.

Part of the problem is that Trump stopped all baby formula imports from Canada as part of the revision of NAFTA. while we seem to have enough, we'd need to put production into high gear again if we were to start exporting to the United States.

Ladies! Carnation or Pet milk, half and half with water, and one teaspoon per bottle will be more than enough for your darling. Mine thrived on it and so did my little puppies. A good all around infant food.

The 2 cans per person is BS... what about families that have multiples (twins, triplets, etc)??? Those little cans last less than a week per kid... at the store's rate, you'd have to go about every other day to make sure you can get what your child needs!

No, you CAN'T just switch back to breastfeeding if you a) never had enough to begin with or b) haven't breastfed in a while and your supply has dried up.
