When you’re scrolling through social media or reading the news, it can start to feel like there’s no good left on this planet. Hearing about terrible and devastating events can sometimes become a little overwhelming. But instead of keeping these feelings to ourselves, we can start a conversation online.

Awful Everything is a subreddit where more than 1.4M members share pictures about the worst of the worst. From stories about the healthcare system and financial troubles to abusive police officers, this community is shining a light on the struggles people face every day.

Bored Panda has collected some of the top-voted images from this online group, so continue scrolling. And if you’re feeling up to it, share your own experiences and thoughts in the comment section below.

Since 2014, the subreddit has been steadily growing and bringing our attention to the devastating things happening around us. From gruesome crimes to minor injustices, the community is dedicated to showing how bad our world can get. As the moderators say, “Lament with us as we view all things that are just genuinely awful.”

Sadly, we have a tendency to dwell on the things that go wrong and use stronger words to describe them. When it comes to the positive or neutral incidents, they seem to be not as important. Just think about negative stereotypes—humans are quick to form bad impressions and often have a hard time changing their views.

The Fact That This Is So Common Is Heartbreaking

The Fact That This Is So Common Is Heartbreaking

agentzuko Report

Even if some of us have a rather optimistic view of life, people still remember more details about their unpleasant experiences. “The brain handles positive and negative information in different hemispheres,” Clifford Nass, a professor of communication at Stanford University, told The New York Times

He said that negative emotions generally involve more thinking, and the information is processed more thoroughly than positive ones.

Psychologists refer to this as the negativity bias. Picture it: you’re having a pleasant day at work until your coworker throws you an inconsiderate comment. When you come back home, what will you remember more—the overall good day or the remark?

Great way to eradicate your customers though. Because type 1 diabetes kills almost instantly without that incredibly effective solution. And really, you can't thrive a company without the big ones like diabetes, so only the rich will have the money, but there are less of those people, making the need to up the price and even fewer people can pay, etc. etc. And when that's your dynamic, you know it's not a very sustainable model.

It is beyond apalling. My friend has diabetes and he couldn't afford insulin. He didn't tell anyone. Maybe we could have helped him. He almost died. He survived but now he is a shadow of himself. He couldn't ask for help because he is Mexican and he has family who are living here without papers. This is making me angry.

That's sad man. May not be the best option for everyone out there, but several countries (like here in Brazil for example) will give you insulin no matter where you from or what your status. Go to the hospital, make sure they understand what you're saying and that's it, free insulin. We may not be rich, but we try to help everyone

The US would not even need universal health care to prevent things like this. Insulin is very cheap to make and the person who first invented it deliberately did not patent it so as many people as possible could get it. The prices for insulin in the US are jacked up to an extreme amount due to corporate greed and the government not intervening to prevent such gross overpricing of medication. They have a salary cap for athletes, but no price cap for medication, think about that.

You're right. This is horrible. But let's get some facts straight. The salary caps for athletes are not government mandated. That is an agreement between the leagues and the athletes. You make it sound like our government set that, and it doesn't.

I recently needed to call an ambulance for myself for reasons (false alarm). The paramedics came and spent 45 minutes examining me in the ambulance and decided to take me to the hospital for further examinations. I spent 3 hours there while they took many many tests and x-rays until I got released. Few weeks later I got two bills, 25€ for the ambulance and about 30 euros for the hospital visit. I am more than happy to pay my "high" taxes in my "socialist" country.

It is. And the majority of people in the US want universal health care with at least a national option if not total national health. However, our constitution allows for many ways for a minority control the majority. And we also have an election system that relies on private contributions. Politicians are easily bought by corporate interests. Health insurance generates massive profits and those companies are among the largest contributors to political campaigns. We spend 2x what our peer countries do on healthcare and we get less for it. The rest is going to administrative costs and profit taking. It's not that the American people are unaware of this, it's just finding a way to fix it amidst our structural issues with representation. We really aren't a democracy despite what a lot of people here want to believe.

I've had to rely on Walmart insulin rather than my prescription many times. I hate Walmart but it has literally saved my life. $24.88 for a bottle of Novolin insulin. And only Walmart sells it at that cost. It's at least $100 a bottle at any other pharmacy. No prescription needed. I feel like more people need to know this. It doesn't change the fact that insulin costs are crazy high and something needs to be done. But it could literally save lives if more people knew.

For those unaware, in the US, this means that he pays $450.00/month but his coverage does not even begin until he pays that $7,600.00 in medical expenses first. Do the math; that's $13,000.00 out of pocket before he gets covered for anything. That's more than a third of his income. People with low wages can't afford that, but that's pretty much all that is available to them and a lot of medical providers will not accept people who don't have insurance. Also, there is an annual penalty fee if we don't pay for health insurance. This is not anomalous. This is how it is here.

Diet, exercise can help too. Type 1 diabetes means your pancreas doesn't work at all. I think there is more to the story. There are ways he could have gotten help. I have insulin, I mean a lot of it that I don't use but keep to help others. He could have gotten involved in a community or group for people in his same situation. I'm just saying there were ways to have gotten help instead of being dead. Like I said, there has to be more to his story than what the person posted.

There are so many programs to provide cheap or free insulin to people that need it. My brother has type 1 diabetes and hasn't had insurance in years. He worked for non-profits at a very low wage and so he got insulin from the companies for a very low monthly cost or free with proof of income. He literally had a dozen hacks and sources for the insulin.

He died in 2017. The price of insulin, the only product that keeps diabetics alive, has jumped 585 percent over a period of 14 years prior. That represented an increase for one-month’s supply from $170 to $1,400, prices that are not justified given the fact that makers didn’t invest in research and development for the product and don’t advertise. Part of the problem is that only three manufacturers make most of the insulin in the U.S. and all have been able to prevent the substance from being available to generic manufacturers by slightly changing its formula over the years, a wrinkle in U.S. patent law that isn’t the case in Europe, where diabetics do have access to the lower-cost generic versions. Some legislators in state Congresses had introduced bills to help diabetics to get their insulin at an affordable rate. However, as soon as President Trump got behind that, they dumped those patients on the ground and left them there, just to not support anything Trump thought was good.

Though it means I will have to take 5+ shots a day, it also means I will not have to pay an extra $2,000 a month . However, having insulin, syringes, a test kit, a Dexcom CGM(necessary for me due to a problem with not waking up with blood sugar in the night) still will cost me over $1750 a month.

Let's talk about that $7,500 out-of-pocket deductible, something absolutely unheard of until Obamacare, because no person in their right mind would ever agree to that. He was forced by the government to pay $6,000 in health insurance, and still had zero access to healthcare. However, due to reforms from BEFORE Biden took office, you can now get a month's vial of insulin from Walmart, for instance, for $73.

I used to get health insurance for $400 per month. Then the federal government said they were going to "help". They instituted Obamacare. My insurance premiums went to $700 per month and my deductibles and co-pays sky-rocketed. Thanks, Mr Obama. Obama promised that he was going to cut health insurance premiums by an average of $2,500 per year. Instead mine went up by $3,600 per year. He swore, "If you like your present health insurance, you can keep your present health insurance. Period." Then he made the policies that I and many other Americans had illegal and we were forced to get new, more expensive policies. Are there problems with American health care? Absolutely. Did government efforts to fix it make it better? No, just the opposite. Do greedy insurance and pharmaceutical companies put profit over human life? Yes. But government officials put ideology and political power over human life.

I have a cat that developed a tumor on his pituitary gland which in turned caused type 1 diabetes. Surgery to remove tumor would cost $12K plus whatever medication to treat. We elected to give him insulin (Lantus), same kind used for humans. I was shocked at the cost for a vial; $450. One day just looking for diabetic cat food came across https://canadianinsulin.com/ The cost for the same product is $185. I seem to remember that Trump attempted to get some legislation passed that would force the pharmaceuticals to charge the same price as the rest of the world.

I spend almost 900 per month to add my husband to my health insurance. He had to retire a bit earlier than we anticipated with a back and knee injury as a commercial electrician. He complains that he doesn't use the insurance (over 2/3 my pay) but at 62, god love him, we need him insured until we can get this retirement nonsense going. We've worked really, really hard our whole lives. It's not fair it should be this hard. Or.......a young man can die not being able to afford his medication. I know I share my damned albuterol inhalor with my younger son (age 27 now) so he can breath. I kind of like to have it for m'self sometimes as I also have asthma. Even when you work hard and do everything "right" you still can be scared every waking moment.

I am so tempted to set up smuggling insulin into the US and selling it for cost - a few dollars. Saving someone's life would be worth the potential jail term.

Now, ask yourselves why is Big Pharma now concerned with "health" yet raised prices of life saving insulin this year? Because they've profited & still profiting off Covid deaths. Stop worshipping Big Pharma!

The entire medical community system in the USS is so f****d up now snd it’s only going to get worse. Started in the 1990’s. I had a pretty heated debate with a nurse who was all for making medicine a “business” This is why your doctor is now called a “provider” (ridiculous) and why people are needlessly dying in droves. If you put the decision of care on the guy who writes the checks, you are not going to get the card you need. Why…THEY ARE PAID TO NOT WRITE CHECKS but to make money for their “business”. Honestly, I could get better more reasonably priced medic as l care from my veterinarian

the high deductible as a side effect of Obamacare and the high cost of insulin is due to a Federal Regulation from the 1970s that if we repeal will lower the cost to less than $10 without insurance. However if he was earning 35k a year he would be eligible for 100% funded Medicaid with has Zero deducible, covered by govt, etc. If he was not on Medicaid that is a personal choice not to apply, and given how easy it is, and how hospitals auto sign up people who are eligible, that i am skeptical of this story.

The thing is if i am not wrong, generic medicines could be a life saver. But the American pharma medicines is too big. They will not allow. In India, we have generic medicines business which has managed to save lives. Some medicines are still high. But the govt from what i know wants to keep rates low for the people. American companies have an issue here.

We don't have control. Our government is going to make whatever choice they want to make regardless of what we say or how we vote. There are millions of Americans that have signed petitions in solidarity for free health care. Our government can do it and get it done they don't want to. So stop acting like we are to blame. We have no control over the choices the people in power make. They are in power and make the decisions. They are supposed to work for us the people. We the people have been begging for free health care they won't do it.

Roy Baumeister, a social psychologist and co-author of The Power of Bad: How the Negativity Effect Rules Us and How We Can Rule It, said that it’s one of the most basic psychological principles that seems to be true everywhere.

“A mind is prone to overreact to negative things relative to positive things; so people can use this to manipulate us, or we can use this to manipulate other people,” he explained. “If we understand this, we can prevent some of the negative effects and improve the quality of our social life.”

There are so many great folks left out of history. Leprosy used to be a disease that would kill or maim so many people through history until a 23-year old black chemist named Alice Ball came up with a cure in 1915. Unfortunately she died the next year due to an accident. Who knows what she could have accomplished? https://scientificwomen.net/women/ball-alice-121

John Tierney, a journalist and the other co-author of this book, mentioned that the reason why we focus more on bad news is probably that it is aimed at the general public. “And the things that affect everyone tend to be negative—we’re all afraid of dying; we’re all afraid of being hurt. Focusing on those shared concerns is the easiest way to reach a mass audience.”

However, people on social media tend to share stories that are more pleasant. “That’s because the positive things we’re interested in—our hobbies, our cultural interests, the books we read—are more idiosyncratic,” he added. “Curating your news feed so that you’re not seeing so many negative stories can be good.”

Understanding and noticing our tendency to dwell on the negativities in life should help us to recognize that things are usually not as bad as we think. While it is important to share and discuss the problems we face in today’s world, it’s also vital to balance it out with the good stuff. So if you’re feeling a bit down, we’ve got you covered. Just take a look at some of our most recent wholesome posts here and right here.

Sadly female upon male abuse is rarely seen and even worse, rarely stopped because not many believe it happens. I have a friend with lasting brain damage from being abused by his wife and daughter. He ended up having part of his brain removed. It does happen, but not many believe, let alone catch it. Most think the woman is the victim.

All this stuff about the. price of insulin makes me so mad because the insulin patent from was originally sold for $1 with the understanding that cheap insulin would become available to all. For a long time the price of insulin was reasonable, retailing for $24 a vial in 1996. But due to no price controls the price has skyrocketed in the U.S. in the past couple years, because apparently the thought process is ‘why not gouge sick people?’ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5001219/
