When you’re scrolling through social media or reading the news, it can start to feel like there’s no good left on this planet. Hearing about terrible and devastating events can sometimes become a little overwhelming. But instead of keeping these feelings to ourselves, we can start a conversation online.

Awful Everything is a subreddit where more than 1.4M members share pictures about the worst of the worst. From stories about the healthcare system and financial troubles to abusive police officers, this community is shining a light on the struggles people face every day.

Bored Panda has collected some of the top-voted images from this online group, so continue scrolling. And if you’re feeling up to it, share your own experiences and thoughts in the comment section below.

Since 2014, the subreddit has been steadily growing and bringing our attention to the devastating things happening around us. From gruesome crimes to minor injustices, the community is dedicated to showing how bad our world can get. As the moderators say, “Lament with us as we view all things that are just genuinely awful.”

Sadly, we have a tendency to dwell on the things that go wrong and use stronger words to describe them. When it comes to the positive or neutral incidents, they seem to be not as important. Just think about negative stereotypes—humans are quick to form bad impressions and often have a hard time changing their views.

A series of governments have but fundamentally you are right - it started with the idiot Reagan and his (and other's ) belief, that 'trickle down' economics would be the best way to enrich everyone, which has turned out to be a complete load of bullshit and only enriches those who either had wealth in the first place or came up with an idea to generate unimaginable wealth through tech or dodgy dealings (see Senators / Congressmen / Politicians (mostly Rep) .... You need a revolution or a way to rip up your current way of doing things otherwise it will only get worse ....

It seams to people like me who live in Europe that something is very wrong in America. I see all the rallies against Obama care, selling the idea that a social health system is socialism or communism and they will have the rights taken away. People are dyeing of illnesses and diseases that a perfectly curable in European country. My sister lost her daughter to cancer, that's sad enough but she didn't loose her savings. She was off work for a year and got 100% of her wage, everything regarding treatments, chemo, immunotherapy, radiotherapy was taken care of by social security.

I am so sorry. I have had terminal cancer for over two years, that would have bankrupted us if we lived in America. But we live in Australia, where serious disease is treated for free no matter how many operations, chemo and hospital stays are required (because it is financed through our tax system). Cancer is tragic enough, without having the govt. bankrupt you as well!

To add insult to injury, there are people who will happily blame this couple for their woes, instead of putting the onus on the government and the system. Nobody ever complains s a bout the millions of dollars the 1% and Corporate get in welfare, but god forbid you work your ass off to make a comfortable life for yourself and end up homeless and in debt up to your ears because you got sick because people are all too happy to call you a worthless POS and if you get government assistance, you are a f*****g freeloader.

Out of curiosity a respectful question: So how does it happen that even with insurance you have to pay so much? Is this kind of insurance not covering everything? What does health insurance in US actually cover?

The story in this thread about Alex Smith (telling about needing insulin) will pretty much explain American insurance. You have a deductible to meet and most insurances only pay a certain percentage of the total expense which leaves you to pay the balance. Depending on the total...it can be impossible. Sometimes people in this country will owe tens of thousands of dollars for medical expenses and that can be after insurance pays their part. It’s sad and sickening.

I'm so sorry you and your wife are suffering so deeply. Regarding your comments on the system of financing healthcare in the USA, I agree with you completely. We've had a very similar situation when our child had a serious accident 13 years ago. My husband is now 70 and working full time because we had to empty his pension accounts to pay for hospitalization and neurological rehabilitation for our son. (And we had "great coverage"!). We don't expect to ever retire. Our system of healthcare coverage is horrendous.

I did a quick Google search for "causes of bankruptcy" and medical debt is consistently the #1 cause. What's even more troubling is that a 2005 study put it at 46%, a 2010 Forbes article put it at 62%, and Investopedia.com cites a 2019 article claiming 66.5% of bankruptcies are caused by medical debt. That's a worrisome trend.

What I don’t understand is our (American’s) pumped up sense of pride about our country. It is no longer “the best” in the world. We are 15th in economic stability, we rank 17th in quality of life, we rank 24-30 in education (depending on subject matter), we rank 57 in maternal mortality, we rank 33 in infant mortality, we rank LAST in healthcare among the “wealthiest” countries, we rank 24th in environmental health, we rank 51st in gender equality (we have never even had a female head of state),we rank 69 in racial equity, we rank 9th in Covid deaths per capita, and 26th in life expectancy. We have to get our nationalistic heads out of our asses and face reality that the US is NOT the epitome of excellence many Americans think it is. Oh wait! We are #1 in something!!! Gun violence. Proud yet?

No one, and I mean NO ONE, should profit of off someone's else misery. That means health care and the prison system. For-profit, private prisons are a shame just as much as pharmaceuticals and medical systems for profiting in the millions/billions when people are sick.

Okay, the US may be awful in many ways, but do you have any idea the conditions that many people who try to immigrate here are coming from? People coming to the US are fleeing places like Haiti and Afghanistan, where many are literally starving and you can be murdered in the blink of an eye by violent gangs or the Taliban, and no one will bat an eyelash. Some people on BoredPanda just love hyperbole and have absolutely no sense of reality or perspective. Honestly, think before you type because this is just... ugh. This comment is so ignorant and shows such a lack of awareness. It treats immigrants and refugees like their experiences in their home countries are trivial and they're just huge idiots. Like what the f***.

When my mother-in-law got cancer, the hospital had them bring in copies of their financial records to determine what to charge them. Because my father-in-law served in the military and she retired from 35+ years as a teacher and they pinched pennies always, they had a good amount saved up so they could travel, enjoy retirement, relax, etc. Instead, the hospital charged them more because they had some assets. She's all better now but probably going to have to come out of retirement and start teaching again to pay off the debt. It's disgusting. Meanwhile, the CEO of the hospital is building a massive mansion West of town and everyone is talking about it.

Every hospital will assist in paying a portion of bills like this, if not even 90%, if you tell them you can't afford it and ask for assistance. There is no "one" USA Health care system. There are tons of insurance plans people have, government assistance if they don't, aid of all kinds and hospitals that specifically treat cancer that people from all over the world come to, and most are treated for free. There are organizations that help. There's a lot more info that is missing from the OP story. Just saying, there's more to this than you get sick, you're wiped out, period. https://www.cancer.org/treatment/finding-and-paying-for-treatment.html

Who don't put their patients into poverty because they are ill! I know Doctors who have trained in Canada go to the US because they can make more money, had an ex-friend who did this - asked him why - because I don't like getting screwed by the government. I cannot fathom how anyone can say it's our fault, we're lazy, we don't work hard enough, we didn't do something right. That is complete b u l l s h i t! The fact is the system is set up against us and the proof is right in front of us with living breathing people telling us exactly what is happening. Yet some deny it, some laugh it off, and most people just don't care because it isn't happening to them directly. We are not lazy, far from it. We are literally killing ourselves working and doing everything right. It truly infuriates me that a lot of our own people are in such denial about how wrong and horrible our system and government is. How we've been lied to about the very foundation of what this country stands for. How our people rage against their own self interest and will blame their fellow man, woman, or child for what is so clearly the doing of government and rich powerful people. Some of our own people are so blinded by their own pride in this country. That they would rather remain a fool and deny it. Than face how they have been fooled and lied to about it all. My favorite quote is it's easier to fool a man than to convince a man he has been fooled. I'm damn near ready to just give up on everything being the way it should be and all of our people being treated better and taken care of. I just don't think it will ever happen.

Our system could work if we regulated profits. Everyone is trying to make money on your health- from the doctor, to the hospital, to the pharmaceutical companies, to insurance. And all the minor parties inbetween. There’s good people in all those groups who are honestly trying to make the world a better place. But there’s also a lot of greedy b*stards too.

Yes, because the United States is the only country in the world where anyone ever suffered unjustly. In Britain, where they have socialized medicine, a baby named Charlie Gard was born with birth defects. The government said that his case was hopeless and refused to treat him. His parents raised the money from private donations to treat him, and the government not only said no, but put guards on his hospital room to prevent his parents from taking him out of the country for treatment. Hospitals in other countries offerred to treat him for free, but the government refused to let his parents take him out of the country. The United States has problems with its medical care system, but at least we don't put guards on children's hospital rooms to prevent them from gettng unauthorized medical treatment.

Yup. My husband got a brain tumor. We wouldn't give up on him and put him in hospice (where everything would be paid for, but they would not give him treatment to live, only keep him comfortable to die) so we had to buy a hospital bed, commode, special equipment to make his food, pay more for his insulin, etc etc etc. We could not afford home health care so I called for him, changing diapers and all He died 6 months later, in June 2019. I am now about $60,000 in debt because of it. I'm 59, disabled, and afraid I'm never going to be okay again. All because of our shitty healthcare system (and we had better insurance than many).

Medicare and Medicaid pay for hospice, so as you say it is paid for. Hospice, sadly, is for terminal patients. Though it is upsetting to come to terms with ("Does Medicaid pay for hospice care? In most states, Medicaid participants are eligible to receive hospice care when they have been diagnosed with a terminal illness with a medical prognosis of less than six months to live if the illness runs its normal course. Medicaid coverage can be used alongside the patient's existing Medicaid coverage.) It's not giving up on someone. Youre buying the equipment they have but can't duplicate this. Hospice gives access to the meds, professional care and attention to make their journey as painless and comfortable as it can be. Insurance pays for the items you mentioned. 'm sorry for your loss and I know people want to do the right thing but there are choices. Hospice workers do the things that leave family with horrible memories because theres a lot you can't unsee when a loved one is dying.

For the whole rest of the world, including the poorest third world countries on earth, the concept of not having a general healthcare for AT LEAST for the neccessary treatments. This is so foreign, that reading about the US healthcare system feels like reading science fiction from another planet. What the hell is wrong with you guys over there? How on earth you are okay with this for so long? They lie to you, even the poorest countries on earth can finance a general healthcare, because the costs are in reality much lower. I just cant understand it how you can live with that. (Btw as long as you have to, and have to pay yourselves anyways, go to a country with the same medical standards, but for a tiny fraction of the price. Thailand for example. Even go and live there with your whole family, for as long as the treatment goes, eating all day, and live in a apartment more beautiful than your own at home, will in the end cost less than what the USA is trying to do. Even for cancer)

70% of costs in the system are due to govt regulations unrelated to Health Care quality or safety. In fact clinics that do not take insurance and operate outside of the health system like the Surgery Center of Oklahoma have costs 90% lower on average. The expenses are due to compliance with crazy govt regulations unrealted to health care.

well i think the defending it part may be a bit extreme, we all have different experiences so as long as you can see that and understand where others come from I think you shouldn't hate them. If youre talking about the military, well many people go into it to get free college so theyre just tryna survive too

If you're defending something just because you profit from it, but loads of other people get royally screwed by it, then I understand how the screwed are hating the screwers, because they're part of their problem.

The Fact That This Is So Common Is Heartbreaking

The Fact That This Is So Common Is Heartbreaking

agentzuko Report

Even if some of us have a rather optimistic view of life, people still remember more details about their unpleasant experiences. “The brain handles positive and negative information in different hemispheres,” Clifford Nass, a professor of communication at Stanford University, told The New York Times

He said that negative emotions generally involve more thinking, and the information is processed more thoroughly than positive ones.

Psychologists refer to this as the negativity bias. Picture it: you’re having a pleasant day at work until your coworker throws you an inconsiderate comment. When you come back home, what will you remember more—the overall good day or the remark?

Roy Baumeister, a social psychologist and co-author of The Power of Bad: How the Negativity Effect Rules Us and How We Can Rule It, said that it’s one of the most basic psychological principles that seems to be true everywhere.

“A mind is prone to overreact to negative things relative to positive things; so people can use this to manipulate us, or we can use this to manipulate other people,” he explained. “If we understand this, we can prevent some of the negative effects and improve the quality of our social life.”

I just don't understand how it is considered justified if he was shot in the back! How can someone be a threat with their back towards you? I really hope this case is properly handled and the officers are not only terminated from their jobs but also sent to prison/death row! May Darrien rest in peace.

There are so many great folks left out of history. Leprosy used to be a disease that would kill or maim so many people through history until a 23-year old black chemist named Alice Ball came up with a cure in 1915. Unfortunately she died the next year due to an accident. Who knows what she could have accomplished? https://scientificwomen.net/women/ball-alice-121

John Tierney, a journalist and the other co-author of this book, mentioned that the reason why we focus more on bad news is probably that it is aimed at the general public. “And the things that affect everyone tend to be negative—we’re all afraid of dying; we’re all afraid of being hurt. Focusing on those shared concerns is the easiest way to reach a mass audience.”

However, people on social media tend to share stories that are more pleasant. “That’s because the positive things we’re interested in—our hobbies, our cultural interests, the books we read—are more idiosyncratic,” he added. “Curating your news feed so that you’re not seeing so many negative stories can be good.”

Understanding and noticing our tendency to dwell on the negativities in life should help us to recognize that things are usually not as bad as we think. While it is important to share and discuss the problems we face in today’s world, it’s also vital to balance it out with the good stuff. So if you’re feeling a bit down, we’ve got you covered. Just take a look at some of our most recent wholesome posts here and right here.

A suicide? More like someone is covering up a rape and a murder. This breaks my heart! I hope one day we can truly tell her story and convict her attacker to life without parole or even the death penalty. May this beautiful woman rest in peace.

It almost seems like American cops would rather work with rapist, abusers, murderers, corruption, and brutality in their force. Than becoming those who fight against it. People like in the pictures above should be celebrated and become the norm. But hey.. what do I know.

Sadly female upon male abuse is rarely seen and even worse, rarely stopped because not many believe it happens. I have a friend with lasting brain damage from being abused by his wife and daughter. He ended up having part of his brain removed. It does happen, but not many believe, let alone catch it. Most think the woman is the victim.

All this stuff about the. price of insulin makes me so mad because the insulin patent from was originally sold for $1 with the understanding that cheap insulin would become available to all. For a long time the price of insulin was reasonable, retailing for $24 a vial in 1996. But due to no price controls the price has skyrocketed in the U.S. in the past couple years, because apparently the thought process is ‘why not gouge sick people?’ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5001219/
