I guess you are not American? In the US, there is no labour law that guarantees a minimum amount of days off.

US employers have exploited weak labor laws for decades to drastically understaff, exploit workers to the fullest, and treat everyone below the manager level as expendable chaff. We're talking about an environment where you can be the best employee the company has for a decade straight and they drop you like a flaming dog turd the second you take an unauthorized day off. It's disgusting, and this pandemic has done wonders for putting an end to the worst of that practice as those businesses with such a reputation cannot find anyone to fill all the positions they lost when lockdown started.

Same here. I try not to take vacations when I know there will be a deliverable, and I coordinate with my team so at least one person is always covering the tasks. But I don't ask permission to take my time off. And if I am sick, I am out.

Out of all the countries in the world, the US offers the least amount of vacation days, and many many jobs don't offer any. For high paying corporate jobs, you start off by getting one week paid vacation after whatever probation period they require (usually a few months), then two weeks after 10 years. For low paying customer service jobs, most don't offer any paid vacation at all, and those that do, it's usually about one week after a year or so. All of this varies by company of course. Two weeks, that's the average amount of time offered by salaried jobs...lowest.in.the.world....pathetic

In the US, hourly employees often don't get vacation or sick days. You have to request a day off, and you don't get paid for it. Most employers are extremely reluctant to give a day off.

we don't get minimum amounts of days off in america. that's left up to our employers. even my dad, who is a high-level lawyer, needs to ask for time off, and he rarely gets it.

Often times we find ourselves working for employers that think the job should be everybodies first priority. Many places will only hire part time staff, so as to avoid giving any benefits, YET they expect you to be available for any schedule. Employers can be bad, which leads to being short staffed, then makes work there even worse for those who remain by putting a hold on any time off, and over working them. Seems that many corporate "leaders", and many bosses think they own you (even off the clock).

Not an American here - I worked for a huge and terrible company. We had to give ~2 months notice if we needed a day off despite having a set number of vacation days available.

That's how it's supposed to work, but some employers seem to think being the boss means you get to control people's lives.

We have a holiday system that everyone can log onto and a rota that everyone can see, if the day is available you can book it as easy as that, we can also book up to 9 months in advance so you can easily plan things.

Unfortunately, not all jobs offer vacation/sick/UPT time. Instead, they use PTO to cover all of it (even then is not required in every state to offer PTO either). Also, companies may place policies on when you can request that time off and for what reasons. And if you happen to be out of PTO or can’t give “policy notice” or they don’t LIKE your reason (even if you have a legitimate reason), they don’t care. You didn’t follow policy. There is no grey area between labor and being human, it’s all black and white to them, sadly.

I have a good, professional job with paid time off, and I have to "ask" to use it. Unless you're the owner or at the very top of the ladder in the US, you need explicit permission for time off and have to ask as far ahead as possible.

Really depends, most jobs let you accrue time off. Other, like mine, give you unlimited time off, and it works as long as your work is pretty much settled up. But I've called off to a)get a gravel delivery b) go to the dermatologist c)take my dog to the vet d) surprise my sister in Florida. Before, in prior jobs, it was more regimented. I could still take time off for whatever, but there was a limit per year.

Only time my office said no one can request time off is when the Code of Federal regulations was updated for the first time in 20 years and we had to completely switch a ton of stuff in our systems, and if we are undergoing an FDA audit which also happens about as often as the codes being updated. Really, the only time things might be an issue is holidays, people taking off extra time around Thanksgiving or Christmas and making sure we still have enough staff to keep the office running.

No. Part time jobs have no benefits. You time in, work, time out, and collect your check. If you're not there, someone else has to cover your shift.
