Having been both sides of the Atlantic playing both host and guest, I am amazed at how simple things became huge stumbling blocks. Things like asking for 'silverware' when you want a fork and getting blank looks. Having no idea how to describe how you want your egg cooked. The way 'water' is pronounced completely differently, to the point of not being understandable.

Taxes are high, but not much higher than in the USA. There is a significant and increasing wealth gap in most european countries, but not as wide as it is in the USA (notable exception being the Scandinavian countries where the wealth gap is low and taxes are high). Racial make up: varies by country but generally quite diverse in metropolitan areas (expect up to 50% non-white in large western towns). Homelessness and poverty: generally lower than USA. All the countries are capitalist (or post-capitalist really), but generally with strong social policies

Exactly. I remember, as an American teenager, being blown away when I saw a banner celebrating Dusseldorf's anniversary. I think maybe it said 700 years (this was in the 80s so I'm not sure). I just remember saying to my friend, "My whole country is only 200 years old!" It is a new feeling for Americans. Yes. We live on land that was civilized and populated before Europeans came over and took it. But the current version of this land is very, very young. And when you grow up like that, it does make the preserved and integrated history in the rest of the world feel... huge.
