Honestly? I kinda feel like you should perhaps question that relationship. Not so much the "OMG WHUT" initial reaction, but being brought to TEARS over it is kind of...yeah. Along the same lines as this post, shall we say?

Mmm...you do realize that "I didn't really mean it" is the most common phrase in the vocabulary of a verbal/emotional abuser, right? This wasn't just a line or two of "What the hell is this?" which would not be unreasonable. This is a WALL of texts of total temper tantrum. There's a MASSIVE difference between, "I love everything about you just the way it is" and "OH MY FUCKING GOD, HOW DARE YOU CHANGE ANYTHING WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!?" There's an equally massive difference between "I don't like that haircut" and "THIS IS A NIGHTMARE." I'm not saying the guy absolutely HAS TO BE an abuser...but I AM saying that this kind of over-the-top reaction needs to be shut down so that it doesn't TURN into abuse, either.

Yeah, unfortunately, not only are there real arses like this, they're common enough that reactions like the one posted here are considered warning signs of potential domestic abuse.

And he can CALMLY tell me that he's not fond of my hairstyle and wishes that I would grow it back out. If he can't TALK to me instead of pitching a fit, I don't want him around. ESPECIALLY if he's pitching a fit about something as superficial as my hairstyle. "Man, I REALLY don't like that hairstyle" is fine. "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO!?" is not.

The point isn't whether or not he loves her hair, it's really that he threw a temper tantrum worthy of a five-year-old over it. That's not just being a "drama queen," it's being pretty damned controlling. "Sweetheart, you know you're not getting much more than cuddles until that's at least shoulder length again, right?" would be one thing. "OH MY GOD, WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO!?" is only appropriate to having actual body parts removed or finding out about an arrest warrant.

I question your definition of "drastic physical change," honestly. It's hair. It grows back. It's not like it's a piercing or a tattoo, which is much harder to undo. No, I'm not going to "consult" before I cut my hair. It's my hair, and I'll do what I want with it. If you come to me in a mature fashion and tell me that you prefer it, say, longer in the back because when we spoon it gets in your mouth if it's too short, I will consider that--but I'm not keeping waist-length hair and the attendant severe headaches I get from that much hair just because you like to run your fingers through it. And if you throw a temper tantrum about it, I'm likely to not even verbally slap you down so much as look at you and say "Get out, we're done."

I'm with Aunt Messy. It's not just that he reacted negatively, it's that he went to such EXTREMES with it. "Oh my god, what the hell happened?" is one thing. Text after text after text of "YOU DID WHAT HOW DARE YOU!?" is controlling and a warning sign. I mean, LITERALLY, "I'm not allowed to change my hair without permission" is a sign of potential domestic abuse. Yeah, she was trying to wind him up, but with how LITTLE it took? I'd be seriously considering kicking him to the curb, personally. (Oh, and by the way, if anyone I were dating grew a beard of mustache, I would be admittedly superficial and refuse to kiss that, but I wouldn't pitch a toddler fit over text messages. And I would admit that it was superficial and try to have a sense of humor about it, instead of screaming that he BETTER SHAVE THAT OFF RIGHT NOW, THIS IS SUCH A NIGHTMARE!)

Yep. A superficial jerk. I'll stand by that. She doesn't need his "permission" for making a joke, and he never even bothered to check to see if that's what she was doing. Instead, he threw a hissy fit and acted like a toddler making threats because she did something he didn't like. That's the mark of a true asshole. ... If he isn't grovelling and apologizing now, then she should turf him out the door. Let him try and order someone else around.

I'm not particularly fond of the undies, but I would like to point out that I sincerely doubt the artist used underwear that were CURRENTLY soaked in blood. I feel that I have a very good chance of being right about this because paint does not stick to wet surfaces very well, and the colors are also very bright and distinctly not muddy with iron stains. Furthermore, while still-bloody fabric is decidedly unhygenic--HOW many diseases can be passed by contact with blood, again?--once you wash them, even if they're stained, they are no longer "unhygenic." Stains are not inherently unhygenic, or no one would ever be able to wear dyed fabrics without getting sick; the difference between a stain and a dye is whether you intend it to be there or not. Because blood stains on undies after they've been washed is no longer blood; it's literally an altered fabric, impregnated pretty much solely with iron oxide into the fibers themselves. Not disease-bearing, no DNA left. Just...a color.

Hon, my zinc levels are on the HIGH side and I still have a ton of stretch marks. Quite simply, stretch marks happen when the skin expands too fast to keep up smooth growth. MAYBE--REMOTELY possibly--zinc helps skin grow better and faster, but honestly, I sincerely doubt it.

Sweetie, you've never had a heavy period if you think that. I don't have a single pair of underwear that DOESN'T have stains like this on it. And this is on medication to make my period a whole lot lighter than it used to be! I used to actually have to use DEPENDS for my period, honey. I'm down to just having to use one of the 10-hour "overnight" pads now...which fills up COMPLETELY and then starts to leak in around six hours. I do not consider my undies "ruined" by this, as while the blood stains them, they are still capable of being washed and sanitary--just streaked with color. And anyone invited close enough to see this had better be thinking about something ELSE than stains! You are a very lucky person to not have to have dealt with this, but assuming that everyone is the same IS offensive, and I think you know that, or you wouldn't have felt the need to apologize in the first place.

PCOS with dysmenorrhea here, and...I actually did always feel "unclean" because of my period, until I was in my late 20s and finally got treatment for it. Something to do with sticky nastiness all over my lower half just makes me feel gross. So a personal conclusion that "periods are gross" is not unjustifiable. I'm pretty sure Lauren didn't mean that EVERYONE should find periods as gross as she does. I'm glad you don't, but other women do, and it's not always from "social pressure." Sometimes, it's just because being covered in blood feels an awful lot like being covered in feces, mud, or snot, all of which are decidedly UNCLEAN.

Heh. My dad jumped all over my need to do a website for a class and got his new website done for free this way. I didn't mind because I got a 105% grade on it. Like refusing to leave a restaurant that was ON FIRE because they hadn't gotten their meal yet, and then winding up putting firefighters in jeopardy and causing themselves injuries that they wasted the courts' time suing over. And "bathing" in the type of ordinance from Oregon goes back to a time when that's what they called "swimming." But many of these actually are ordinances in their respective states, albeit about half are probably only local. 1. I'm not, I'm asexual. 2. Being a sexual being does not absolve you from having some goddamn self control. If you cannot refrain from shoving a camera under a woman's skirt--or a man's, for that matter--without permission, then you are functionally not a human being, you are a would-be rapist. And the laws against up-skirt photo are specific to a LACK OF CONSENT, sir, not to consenting adults taking sexy photos. If you can't understand the need for consent, you need to be cast out of society to where the only person you can hurt is yourself. It's not about sexual repression, it's about sexist oppression, in other words.
