Agreed. I grew up in what must be the homeless capital of North America and I encountered homeless people daily and I've never once met one who didn't have a substance abuse problem. It's not a lack of jobs, it's that something in their lives made them take a wrong turn and it snowballed. Hopefully this fella does right by himself and takes full advantage of this opportunity. Best of luck to him.

While the state is to blame certainly, one thing that might have prevented this bright guy from living in the street is a family bond. Unfortunately, unlike other countries (say, Mediterranean, South American, Middle Eastern, etc.), family ties in the USA are very weak. A mother, sister, brother, aunt, or even a cousin could take such a guy home were he in a different country. Everything in the USA is about dollars.

It may not be due to being unemployed, he had 3 skillsets in pretty demanding jobs. Might have post traumatic syndrome from any of them, something can click in your head and you just walk away from your family your life your everything, depression even can make you walk away.

The sad reality. It's the same here, in Bulgaria. Intelligent and skilful people with amazing personalities and good souls, who once had their life all figured out suddenly become homeless in all kinds of nasty circumstances. It's often not even their fault.
