Just an older retired guy here. Majored in photography and never made a dime from it. Like they say, farming is fun until you do it for a living. LOVE boredpanda!!! Raises my spirits when I'm a bit down and I enjoy the talented, kind, wonderful people who contribute to this site!

Parents Want To Downsize, Expect Their 19-Year-Old To Move Out

My mother died when I was 6 and my father died when I was 19, so I can relate. I'm in my 60s now and a friend just lost his mother, she was 91. Although he never said so, I know we were a burden to my late father. That experience made me vow to never have children, and I never did. As a result, I got to travel and do exactly as I pleased. I retired at age 55, some 10 years ago. Best move I ever made. My sister had children, so when I wanted to hang with the kids, I did. When I got tired, I went home. Now they are adults and I can spoil them just like I did when they were kids. How you ask? At Thanksgiving this year, I gave them each $35,000 to put against their mortgages. I can't take it with me, so I prefer to see them get it while I can appreciate the difference I make in their lives.

Actually, you would be wise to buy the worst house in the best neighborhood. My late aunt was a very successful real estate broker and she gave me so much excellent advice. I got a deal on the land, a steal on building my home in the recession of 1990, I battled and beat dishonest developers, and handed the tax man his head. (Tip on fighting real estate tax: Never say you can't afford the taxes, they don't care. Instead, document failures of the town to enforce code, provide photographic evidence. I went to battle for taxes 4 times in 30+ years and I won every case.)

I was granted special access to Herculaneum in 1974 before the general public was permitted to visit. Seeing wooden tables with the bread still on the plates was amazing. Door frames and all wooden items (food included) were just black carbon, roasted from the heat of the ash. The tunnels were very dark and narrow, portions of bronze statues were jutting from the volcanic matrix. It was almost 50 years ago, and the sight was unforgettable.

I love figs too, I have around 15 trees. Only a few varieties have an opening for the wasp to enter. The last time I saw fresh figs in the market was some years ago. At that time they were a dollar each and the quality was poor. Few things are better than fresh figs taken off your own tree.
