Because he wasn't a person to them, so why bother. Remember what happened to Emmet Till, who was also just a child and was brutally tortured and mudered. Look up Hayes and Mary Turner. Mary was pregnant when she was lynched, and her baby was cut out of her and killed, too. Ruminate on that. A literal baby was cut out of its mother's stomach and lynched. These people used to take photos and share postcards of themselves posing with their lynched victims. Blacks simply weren't people to them.

One of the coolest things I've ever seen was about half a block from my old house. Was walking back from a carnival at twilight and there was a little bridge that went over a creek that ran through the neighborhood. The sun was setting, and everything was aglow except for the creek, which was black with shadow from trees overhanging on both sides. And dancing in that pocket of darkness above the creek were thousands of blinking lightning bugs. This was in the middle of the city. It took my breath away.
