Great question! We -- meaning in particular white people -- need to talk about this stuff. It is uncomfortable and may even be embarrassing, but if we allow fear or embarrassment to stop us, then there is no hope. One thing that all white people need to accept is that we can never fully appreciate what it means to be a POC in today's America. But instead of being afraid to make supportive/kind comments because it may be interpreted wrong or we may be ignored, we need to have courage to ask questions and engage in dialogue and express our fear and confusion honestly. Then we learn and can begin to heal. Otherwise there is no hope. The color of skin doesn't define a person and each person is an individual. BTW: Begging for forgiveness is often seen as irritating...try just being kind as you would to anyone of any color.

I felt the same after Baltimore, and I was feeling just very... Sorrowful. I have lots of PoC friends and it felt like silence was complicity, but begging random black people for forgiveness felt like piling on emotional labor. I've decided that the best thing to do is to attack racists (verbally) to make sure that saying racist shit is a very unpleasant experience. I may not be able to change how people think, but if I can shut that sort of talk down I can make it harder to thrive. Flatten the curve and make racists afraid to racist again.

Honest question: obviously all people, black and white, are most likely aware of this right now. Is it encouraging or annoying of me, as a white woman, to say something supportive to any black person I encounter? I don't want to bother someone in the middle of a store or "single them out" for being black, but I also don't want to ignore the situation.

I guess for the single, overworked parked parent, what you can do is simply leave little notes for your child, put special treats in their lunch, cuddle an extra 10 minutes, hug then extra tight, tell them you love them ALOT, send them silly text messages....all of this adds up and tells them that you love them.
