I certainly respect your position. I, too suffer from mental illness, both anxiety and bipolar (both well-managed with medication now). I learned about the importance of this language because my nephew took his life almost 9 years ago at the age of 26 and I became involved with volunteering with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. People with mental illnesses, however, do have a quantifiable medical condition. Our brain chemistry isn’t “normal”. Our neural-transmitters don’t fire the same way as someone without mental illness. Our dopamine, serotonin, or glutamate levels may be off. These chemical difference and the symptoms they produce are an illness which, thank goodness, can be successfully treated. Afsp.org is a wonderful organization for information.

There are actually many ways to think about it. I am not sick or a monster for being depressed, but I am mentally 'ill'. This is factually correct, although it sounds insulting. Times have changed and mental 'illnesses' are understood instead of ostracized a lot more now. However, like you said, the verbiage emerged from seeing it as a crime, an illness, when it isn't. Somehow, we should stop using these hurtful terms, but they have changed a bit in meaning. In the end, there are pros and cons of using these general terms. Also, every experience of depression, suicidal thoughts, and other medical ailments is different, but the common similarity is that we are hurt, and we die because the ailment has become too strong. People who feel they are left with no choice but to hurt or kill themselves have fought long and hard and broke down in the end because they couldn't take it anymore, which, in a way, is a crime of society by neglecting their calls for help.
