It's all about maximising what you have. I have friends in the same boat. Clapped out cars that they have fixed up that seem to outlast any other on the road. Always made the 'richer' kids jealous. Makes you wonder who is really the 'rich' one.

My boss makes me work long hours including weekends with no extra pay, no paid leave of any sort (sick leave, vacation), can't leave my work until it's completed, have to go back later to complete work at no pay, have to complete my own work then do accounts/invoicing bank trips - all for no extra pay. I can have a day off when I want but don't get paid. He's a real bastard. Did I mention I'm self-employed?

Here in Australia you get so many paid sick days, so many paid annual leave, varied maternity/paternity leave (a mix of full time pay and part time pay), (unpaid) domestic violence leave, and some other types I may have missed. .We have universal health care, so being sick shouldn't be a catastrophe and have plenty of laws that make it difficult to fire somebody for bullshit reasons. .Where you work often determines exactly how much time you get off. .Probably not perfect but seems to work well although you can still have a shit job and work with real losers and dickheads.

It's mainly food ones for me too. We lived on the edge of a small farming town with nothing but wheat fields past our backyard, half of which was taken up by a veggie garden (we were on just about an acre of land). I grew to love eating vegetables raw or cooked including potatoes, which would freak out my friends. Also would eat lemons like they were oranges. Grossed kids (and one teacher) out with peanut butter and banana sandwiches for lunch at school. And every now and then would put peanuts into a bottle of 7-Up, Sprite, or Coke, and eat them as I drank my soda, which people thought was crazy.

Is actually possible their first language isn't English maybe? Different languages actually have different punctuation. In my language(Russian) you would very much need a comma there. English punctuation still confuses me sometimes even though from experience I can avoid mistakes like that by now.

My daughter was always smaller than the other kids in her class when she was in kindergarten. There was one little boy who repeatedly picked on her, from hair pulling to pushing her down on the play ground. I spoke to the recess monitor (repeatedly), I spoke to her teacher and finally went to the principal. These assholes actually thought it was "cute" that this little prick had such a crush on my daughter. I gave her permission to defend herself and the next time he tried to hit her, she dropped him with a well placed kick to the nuts. I had saved copies of every note I sent the school as well as all emails between the principal & myself - going back almost 6 months. Hell no she didn't get suspended. He didn't receive any punishment either, but he stayed well away from her after that. What are parents supposed to do when the system fails a child? I suppose I could have beaten up HIS Mom, but jail has never really appealed to me.

Victor Alexander - I am both fat and impressively pale. I agree with the previous posters. Sure, there were a few who were actually laughing at her - whether it is because she was posing in front of a busy walkway, because she (like me) is incredibly pale, or because she was fat, we don’t know. Many were simply looking in her direction or at her with neutral expressions, the same way we must see someone in order not to walk into them. Yes, one or two stood out as being fat-shaming, but most of them seemed much more innocent than that.

Three failure points: The bully, the parents of the bully and the Principal. The kid was right to fight back since the school would obviously not protect him. The real shame here is the School Principal; whom is obviously too afraid to address the issue with any objectivity. Instead, retreats into a neutral position with the hope of appeasing the parents of the bully and not have to deal with them any further. Fairness in this case would be to suspend the bully and require him to attend some mandatory counseling. However, so many people like this Principal are not capable of making fair decisions, since taking a side—even when just—is often an uncomfortable commitment. What's needed is to remove people like this Principal from positions of influence.

I am overweight and I don't feel the need to constantly bawl about, cry fat shaming, or banging on my chest "accept me otherwise you're shit" What I can do about is that I eat healthy, work out, dress prettily and pay attention to hair and make up. And then one day I'll feel good in my skin. That's all and nothing more.

Two tings: First, many of these people aren't even looking at the woman, they're obviously looking past her (you can tell by how far behind or in front of her they are). Second, you can't say for certain that they're staring at her with contempt. They could simply be curious about the camera (or, as in one photo, why an adult is swinging on a swing set obviously meant for children). Maybe these people were annoyed that she set up her camera tripod on obviously busy walkways or paths. You can find anything in a completely subjective photo - it seems to me that this woman chose to set herself up for stares or looks, then called out the very activity that she herself caused. I wonder how many looks she'd have had if she'd set up her tripod on the side of the walkway. Pity we'll never know.

Exactly. She's the one constantly judging strangers she encounters on the street, many of whom probably just feel curious to see the camera and someone posing in front of it. Now, I'm sure several of these people are without a doubt staring at her. Her wardrobe isn't flattering her at all, sadly, at it catches people's attention. There are many factors here, not just being overweight.

I'm fat and I certainly don't think everyone should be rail thin. But, there is a way to carry yourself when you have extra weight and a way to dress. She fails on both counts. With the bad haircut, ill-fitting clothes and dorky, Buster Brown shoes she looks, frankly, like a retarded child in some of those photos. Plus, anyone holding a map will get looks because people may wonder if you're lost. She can't assume what people are thinking.

Why overweight people think that it's always about them? What if this people aren't looking at her but at something behind the frame or next to her? Are we now shaming everyone who even walk next to overweight people and dare to look somewhere near them?

This lady has severe self esteem issues. I have them too, so I say from experience. When you're super self conscious, your brain instantly assumes everybody must hate you as much as you do and for the same reasons, so pretty much anything anybody does can feel like they're judging you. They're looking at you? It's because you're ugly. They're not looking at you? It's because you're ugly! And it's hard and takes time to start consciously trying to change that negative train of thought.

I think the cop was just trying to photobomb her. He's not touching her, just hovering the hat over her head so she doesn't notice what he's doing. I've seen people who do that, randomly do something to people who are posing for photos, it's just a silly joke. I agree staring can make us uncomfortable, but as someone with low self esteem that is trying to rewire my negative brain, just because someone is looking at you for a while, doesn't mean they're judging you badly, and even if they are, it's not necessarily because of what you think it is - we just tend to assume that because WE are insecure and self conscious about that trait, so it feels like everybody else must be paying attention to it too.

What? it's just some people looking at her or looking vaguely her way. Some are obviously staring at her, which can certainly be uncomfortable and make me feel slightly bad for her. I have no idea what that cop was thinking. Was he trying to be funny? Others, however, just seem to be a bit of a stretch. For example, the guy sitting at the table and Time's Square doesn't really seem to be staring at her. Or the woman with the loaf of bread in front of the Mercat de la Boqueria in Barcelona (my hometown!) seems to be looking at something past her. What do you guys think?
