Because you're making the assumption that she's the owner of the account. This is a voice on a phone. You have no idea what she's saying is true or if this circumstance is as she described. search YouTube for the phrase "This is how hackers hack you using simple social engineering" 2 minute video. Watch it and educate yourself. The information stolen can be used to gain access to an account, change passwords and information. This agent wasn't a hero, she was an idiot. And she was conned. I wouldn't be surprised if you look this "ex husband" up and find he never had a wife. The end result is she gave away personal information without knowing. That's why you can change information or close accounts, but you can't disclose information. She broke the cardinal rule because of a "story" which could have been a lie.

I know, this agent is insanely naive. You can feel bad for them. You can be sad, but you have quite literally opened your company up to a privacy lawsuit, and broadcasted the information online. You're a idiot. You can feel bad, you can commiserate, you can kick it up to management, but you CANNOT GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION to a rando on the phone. It's people like this that keep me paid well. Cyber security. Why does the company pay security specialists so much? Because people that "want to help" are so much more costly than paying people like me.

There's a reason It's against company policy. search Google for DEF con *(hacker convention)... hell I'll show you a video... search YouTube for the phrase "This is how hackers hack you using simple social engineering" It has the number one phisher at that time manipulate a service agent into giving her confidential information. The only difference between this "ghosted wife" is the crying baby. A tool used by these guys to manipulate heartstrings.

This is not stalking, it's textbook phishing. You have successfully given someone's personal information from their account to a random voice on the phone. You have no idea what the circumstances are. There are more chances that it's a scam than that it's a legitimate request and that's what should give you pause. How is it that the lawyer can't find this guy, lawyers are the ones who hire the private eye, so they can serve them divorce papers properly. In fact this would actually be ammunition "for" the woman in her case against him in court. There are a number of other legitimate ways of getting this information, why is it so important that she gets it 'now' and... from the cable service? All these guys applauding are cheering on identity theft. You can't be so naive in this world we live in now.

No, no applause. This is so stupid. This is a phisher stealing an identity. How can you guys justify trusting a "voice on the phone" with free sensitive information from a personal account? You have no idea if this is true.

You realize this actually is phishing? You may not have helped some desperate ex wife, but given all a guys information to a random stranger? Helped change addresses etc? This is exactly the kind of emergency situation a phisher would put up to manipulate you into giving them something small. After she finished with you, her next call could be to another billing agent provide, name, address and phone number... to get something else, probably the card attached to the account, etc until she had everything. I mean she has all the proper forms and ID why wouldn't you? I'm actually surprised you missed this possibility. You could actually get fired for this. It's quite possible you were conned in a really big way. I would find it hilarious if you did a search and found this guy was never married. This is so dumb. That was a voice on the phone, you have no idea... grr

It is not only that, we have weekly reminder at work, to do not give any company information over the phone. If the company wants something from you, the come in person, or will use the company canals. And they will not ask you about some codes, on some cards to buy. Please be don´t that stupid.

Out of interest in New Zealand this is 100% a breach of the privacy act, you're also required to protect the information on the account if you know it isn't the account holders. If the she hadn't admitted it wasn't her information it would be a grey area, but she did, therefore it couldn't be released. Even if the customer was to request all the information on their account, this information would have to be redacted as it knowingly identifies another person. Also, having worked investigating these types of issues, I hate to say how often the account holder lies to manipulate the agent into empathetically give information or to make it appear that they are the 'victim' of the story. There really are two sides. Here, this agent would have essentially broken the law, and would be on the line personally for a massive fine along with the company in question. I'm not saying this is right BTW, just saying how it is here.

Could not be a more different situation. Having worked in a bank call center, I can assure you that when the person whose name is on the account calls in, we actually cannot legally WITHHOLD any information that account holder requests without very good cause (if there's cause to think there's fraud going on, there's a specialist department that caller gets to talk to about it). The ex-husband made expensive changes to the account without permission of the actual account holder, and I'm quite sure the poster would rather not have wound up fired for aiding and abetting by shielding the ex as you seem to think they should have.

I mean, ive noticed a huge difference in the pastry. Sure, its still pastry, but the store bought stuff is just tough and doesn't flake well. Bad pastry can really make or break some tarts, and it only takes maybe 10 mins to make a basic short crust with a blender. I get that for some its not worth it, but the difference is noticeable for sure. Everyone will know, if they have the experience.
