Firstly, for the idiot commenters saying she was eavesdropping.......how TF can you do that when they are openly saying it right in front of you? Secondly, this whole situation is weird, and kinda stupid. It seems like two young immature girls didn't communicate well and now they are both mad at one another when really they were both kinda being jerks.

I'd have heard the "weird thing to wear" or "didn't eat" comments and said in reply, in the lingua franca (Portuguese in this case), "Oh? I find this outfit comfortable. Oh, and I wasn't as hungry as I thought, it is delicious food nonetheless." So they'd know I udnerstood. THey get to be mortified, I'm TA, whatever, but using another language as "code" is rude AF, IMHO. Mom's parents did it to us all the tiem, not realizing we were kids, we'd learned the language!

I guess it is matter of your culture but I find it extremely rude to use a language in the presence of someone who doesn't understand that language in the first place, let alone badmouthing them. On the other hand it was also not OK not to inform them that she spook the language.

Jorocky looking in the mirror or washing your hands have absolutely no hindrance in actually using the toilet. Have you ever been in a woman's bathroom? There are stalls around the toilets. The mirrors and the sinks are attached to the wall outside of the stalls. Having to take your pants down and hover over a toilet takes a few minutes rather than stand and pull a zipper down and I'm guessing you don't wash your hands? As far as a place only having one toilet if you're that selfish as a man or a woman to go in and mess around when there's a long line than that's an individuals shortcomings. That's not what was being discussed here.

Why though? If you want to have a private conversation it's on you to ensure the conversation is in fact private. Just switching to another language in the middle of a conversation is plain rude and not private at all.

5 months of dating, and the question on language never came up, I find that very hard to believe. Being both of Japanese descent it would be the most normal thing to do.Especially as the OP has visited her friends home on several occations.I wonder why she never let on that she speaks Japanese. I speak 5 languages..and get the gist of conversations in more languages To total strangers I don´t feel the need to inform them that I understand what is being said...i.e overheard talks on public transport or phones etc.but in a private home where I am a guest,parties,museum tours and such I will inform I understand the native language well enough. I found this post extremely rude,not funny and the OP is 100% at fault. She shows a total lack of respect.

Back when I still worked in a 911 center, I got a call that was pretty obviously a swatting attempt. Describing a hellish situation feet from them but silent in the background, normal tone of voice, phone not showing remotely near the area they're describing. (Note: I started two calls, one where they said it was in case it was true and one where their phone was actually showing with all the details so we were CYA in case of real issues, but actually investigating what was likely happening)... Anyway. After a bit they say they have to hang up because it's not safe to stay on the phone. Then I hear pocket rustling sounds and the same person talking in the background about how "that b***h Anna is gonna get what she deserves when them 'Poh-leece' show up and point them guns at her" and a bunch of laughing, clearly not meant to be heard by me. So I add that all in too. Anyway, PD found them pretty quick, because the area they were actually calling from was very low density population. Hearing them panic when they saw PD outside of their house was a special kind of fun.
