I used to work at a drug store in a mall that was built on native land, so a large portion of the clientele was First Nations (West Vancouver, BC). One of my regulars was named John, who always came in with amazing make-up and feminine clothing. I asked about it oneday (being a 19 year old who knew nothing about how the world worked) and John explained that they were Two-Spirit, and what that meant in regards to their culture, and to gender in general. It was my first experience with gender norms being subverted, and I've never forgotten it since.

Some years ago I was exploring islands and found myself underwater looking at coral reefs, even a shark in the background. Yup. This is a common thing that Americans do in Canada, as well. And they love to watch the young cashiers struggle to figure out how to work the conversion setting on the register, and take issue that not everyone pays attention to the currency exchange rate on a daily basis. No, we can't just "figure out the conversion in your head."
