My husband grew up in a family where they were comfortable but on a strict budget. Six kids and mom on disability. My family had no budget. One day we were at the grocery store and he always insists on walking up and down every aisle. I finally lost it because he was taking so long and asked him why he did it. “Growing up we could only spend $100 a week on groceries for all of us. I always had to put what I wanted back because we couldn’t afford it. Now I can afford whatever I want so I like to look at everything I could have.” Took him 10 years to tell me this. I felt like a terrible person.

Tobacco and alcohol if invented today would never make it to the public market. They cost so many lives and do so much damage they should never have been legal

As a lifelong smoker, I could not disagree more. Tobacco has not benefited my life in any way, it is an addiction that I have spent years trying to overcome and wasted far too much money on. There is nothing good about tobacco, and when kids start because they think it's cool they have no idea that they could be setting themselves up for a life of pointless addiction. Bring on the total smoking bans, I'm all for it.

So here is the problem with your issue with the “nanny state government”. Those governments end up spending millions of dollars to 1. Clean up cigarette butts from the environment (San Francisco won a lawsuit against the tobacco companies for this very issue, they had street sweepers unload the bins, and keep an account the cigarette butts) 2. The medical bill issue which many governments must subsidize to treat small cell carcinoma and others cancers related to smoking and the disabilities related to care. The expenditures go on, wildland fires caused by discarded cigarettes etc It’s all fine to bitch about something but please consider all the issues in your future rants about government “over reach”

Is this any different from forcing people to wear seatbelts or helmets? It's strictly for their own health, and the risk far outweighs the luxury. Speaking from an American perspective, I think it's prudent to have more "nanny" laws from a nation with universal healthcare; if people's healthcare is being paid by the public taxes, then it's in the public interest to put a stop to needlessly reckless habits that cost them money. To put it bluntly, it actually IS the government's business.

depends on what you are comparing it with. Natural burials are still the most eco-friendly (maybe composting will be better but it's not really available for most people). USA-style cemetery with embalming and concrete cases for caskets are definitely worse.

as opposed to burials, which use land and often do not degrade, the body is biodegradable and will burn naturally and is thus more eco-friendly

I worked retail and walked up to a customer in the fastener aisle, which is filled with thousands of different things, and asked if he needed a hand. Then I noticed he was an amputee... he didn't say anything about it, just asked for what he was looking for and I slunk off to the lunchroom to sit in the corner feeling small.
