It is plainly obvious for all to see that he has European ancestry, but by wearing a costume from his nation's non-European history he is acknowledging that ethnicity takes second place to nationality. I know in north america there is a strong taboo around cultural appropriation, but that sentiment is not widely shared around the world, at least not that I've encountered.

Right - for those have who their knickers in a twist saying that it's wrong to have a Boer dressed as a Zulu... he's not. Actually, I'd say Native Americans and Asians built America. Or maybe you don't know that part of American history. I'm pretty sure the white people that live in South Africa now had nothing to do with when Europeans came there. They've been there for more generations then America has even existed. They have a right to represent their homeland. Otherwise, by your own logic, African Americans have no right to represent anything that has to do with America since they aren't from there and all.
