Prior to Covid I traveled the country working autoshows. A few years back I'm working the Pittsburgh. Got off work, ordered Chinese takeout from a hole in the wall. Placed my order, and then sat in the lobby staring at my phone. A white family comes in. Out of courtesy, I acknowledge them by head nodding like how black dudes greeting in passing. A few seconds goes by and the dad impatiently asks, "So are you going to seat us or what?" Mind you, I'm wearing a full suit with a magnetic name badge that clearly says my name and Ford Motor Company. This is where the story could've ended but I decided to be a d**k. So I got up, grabbed some menus, and sat them. Promptly sat my ass back down. Dad blurts out he's ready to order. When he asks why I'm not writing anything down, I reassured him I memorized everything...only to sit right back in the lobby. Dad is livid. Confronts me. Owner overhears commotion, brings out my food. When I was in the second grade for a science fair I came up with portable silverware that you reuse to cut down on plastic waste. This was the late 80s. I was a little kid with zero connections. Fast forward to today and I see high-end portable silverware that is in a carrying case...like those metal straws...and I'm thinking WTF. I should have just patented the idea back in the 80's.

Many years ago while driving home I saw a dog chilling by the side of the road. Didn't want him to get hit by traffic so I scooped him up. Noticed there was an address and a number of a veterinarian. Left a voicemail saying to please contact the owner. This dog went quite a ways. I drove nearly 30 minutes to drop him off at his house. As I pulled up to the driveway, his tail started wagging profusely. Rang the doorbell, no one home. Give him a pat on the head, and dropped him over the fence. Felt good about myself on the drive home. Vet returns my call. Says the address I said I was heading to is an old address. I dognapped an animal that was chilling in his front yard...only to dump him halfway across town. Let that sink in for a second. Now...I have to drive BACK to the other side of town. Neighbors see me "steal" a dog off the property. Now I have to drive BACK to the house I originally saw the dog in front of. Owners are home and they laugh, saying he always manages to get out.

There's a clip circulating on the internet where a teen asks a classmate for a ride...only ambush him once they get to their destination. Two more kids appear out of nowhere and they steal the good samaritan's watch, iPhone, and wallet. They forget however, that they're on foot...and their victim is still behind the wheel of a 2000+ pound motor vehicle. He doesn't run them over with his car per se...but he does hit them hard enough they get launched into the air. One thief sustains a broken leg, the other, a serious head injury. All parties involved including the driver faced jail time. Moral of the story: I don't have one. This is the harsh truth: For every vain and shallow person who wants to model...a photographer that is good had to spend hundreds if not thousands of hours working on their craft from realizing how to light to how to frame a shot to retouching the images. For every 100 models there is maybe at most 20 photographers. So as a photographer...the odds are always in my favor. I get dozens of the most vapid messages on a daily. They all start exactly the same: "I love your work!"...Cool. Fucking hire me. You don't say that to a hairstylist or a restaurant you love eating at. Come on. It's great that you had a perfect birth at home, but it's a bit demeaning to say that people expressing doubts about home birth just "didn't realize the full feminine strength that all women posses". My son didn't breathe at birth and needed care. I have several friends whose babies were saved by an emergency intervention when nothing wrong was expected. I'm guessing home birth is fantastic if everything goes right... but birth is unpredictable. Things can go catastrophically wrong very fast and as much as the hospital isn't glamorous, it's still a very safe place to be in case of emergency for the mother or the baby.
